THE STATE BOARD OF HEALTH. The State Board of Health seems to be gradually bringing itself into ridicule by its extra wise precautions, injunctions and various orders in many localities to the people about what they shall eat and what they shall drink, how their houses shall be built, on what kind of ground they shall occupy, etc. So much talk about the danger of microbes and so forth and so on is getting Eomewhat chestnutty. Tt Board of Health is entirely too scientific, too learned for the age in which its members live. The people of 25 years ago it strikes us were about as healthy as those now-a-days without any Board of Health to tell them what to do to live. The people are beginning to wonder what particular benefit thBoard of Health is and why it was created.

SHORT IN ATTENDANCE. Minutes of the daily proceedings in the House of Representatives in Congress show that Landis during this last session has been absent scores of times on electioouering tours probably. At the same time he draws his S41G per month quite regularly. A Congressman is nothing more nor better than the paid laborer of some concern. If he misses a day from his work it is deducted from his regular weekly or monthly allowance. It should be the same with Congressmen. They are cheating the (fbverntnent when away from their dutieB in Congress on private business. If Landis and other petty scheming politiciacs had their pay deducted for absence on private business would have a very salutary influence s_ doubt. It would be just at least.

ONE COMMISSIONER. Che law should be so framed that of both political parties should Constitute the board of county commissioners. It would be better for the tax payers. One commissioner of politics »-ppoeite to the other two, although in the minority when voting on matters of *-peoditure of the public funds could often do much good in preventing extravagance. We see the need of it in this county. It is hardly possible that the order or agreement to pay Bonnell and Maxwell money in the Hutton investigation would have gone through had a democrat have been upon the board to oppose it. Without losing any of their party fealty republican voters should see the advantage to the people of placing on the board a democratic commissioner.

PRESSING LEGAL BUSINESS. Ex-President Harrison deolines to take a hand or make any speeches during the present political campaign in Indiana, on the ground of present legal business demanding hie undivided attention. It has been noticed before that whenever the prospects look gloomy for his party in this State the ex-President when wanted excuses himself from party service on account of pressing legal bueine

THE STREET FAIR.

The street fair closes to-night. Financially and as an object of interestto the people witnessing it it has been a success. This is the first street fair here. Others nun fol.ow, and from the experience gained iu this exhibition I hey amy be made more attractive and interesting. We believe the btn et f.iit can be made a permanent institution. Different from county fairs it is flee, and this £ots a 1°D» distance with many people. As it costs nothing to see the things exhibited people will atteud. To draw the people give them something for nothing. The advantaue ot the street fair pecuniarily is ten fold greater than the county institution to business men, consequently there will be much greater efforts put forth to make the street fair permanent.

THE ELECTION.

Only a little more than two weeKs of time remain until the election. Regarding the prospects locally for the democratic ticket those who should be able to giue correct opinions say that it is encouraging. The candidates upon the ticket- have most of them made a very thorough canvass, and are seemingly well pleased with the prospects. There will not be the full vote polled by either party at the election, as the people are not taking the interest this year as formerly, many of them being indifferent to election results. The democracy, we believe, are fairly well organized, and if the voters of tbe party will but do their duty we can elect three-fourths if not all tbe candidates on the ticket.

To help boost the declining prospects of the party in Vigo county, the republicans got President McKinley to stop off for an hour at Terre Haute one day last week on his way east from Omaha, Such dodges to secure support Bre getting very oommon and fail often of their intention to aid the State and congressional ticket, and will in that case. Jamas G. Biain when a candidate went through the country exhibiting himself to admiring multitudes ot his party, yet it did little good. He failed to help his party in anv of bis tours.

THE notorious Senator Quay, of Pennsylvania, the republican politician who controls the people of that State almost as completely as a king does his sub jects, makes and unmakes tbe officials of that State just as be wishes, it seems is responsible for the uppointment of Dr. Heidekoper, the horse and dog doctor who was appointed to a responsible position as surgeon-in-cbief in the army.
