THE CITY DEBT.

The city debt of Crawfordsville is 860,000 and the interest paid for the past five years would amount to a good big sum. Just when this city will be out of debt no man has a vision pene trating far enough in the future to say. We have had some exceedingly brilliant financiers at the head of our city gov ernment in past years—men who could not attend to their own business affairs with any degree of success. Voters in city matters very generally carry their partizan feelings to extreme. It should not be is he a good democrat or a good republican? but is he a good reliable business man. Picking out party workers as councilmen is what has played hobb with our city management, kept taxes high and created bitter feeling toward those in control. Price, Braden and Vanarsdall are frequently spoken of as model councilmen, and the regret expressed that we have none of that kind now. These men could say "no" very distinctly to either republican or democrat in city matters, when they thought a measure injurious to the tax payers was contemplated. They were indifferent whether the man and his influence was against them at the next election or not. It is to be regretted that we have not a few of that kind now. There would be less of petty jobbery, more business infused in city matters, a more rapid reduction of the city debt, less favoritism and a more pleasing state of affairs to the tax payers than now exists.

YELLOW FEVER.

The disease known as yellow fever is now raging at several points in the State of Mississippi with great virulence, and a number of deaths have been reported. At Jackson, the capitol of the State, over fifty deaths are chronicalled within the past three weeks, and at Oxford and Natchez, many cases are reported. Medical talent seems unable to cope with this disease when once it has a foothold and its ravages are only ptopped by cold weather.

THE~STREET~FA~IR.

Every citizen interested in the welfare of our place should use his influence, be it great or small, to make the street fair a euccess. If rightly managed and visitors to it are hospitably entertained it will be of great pecuniary benefit hereafter. Consequently citizens should use extra exertions to please and attend to the wants of the many friends, strangers and visitors who may be with us for a short season. It will pay.

ROOSEVELT FOR GOVERNOR.? Although a very short time hero, the republicans of New York have nominated Roosevelt, the commander of the rough riders in the tight with the Spanish forces at Santiago July last. They hive considered that his war record should be sufficient to carry him hrough if nothing elen could bejfound to recommend him. Roosevelt was a member of the civil service commission some time since, and used his position to punish his enemies. They will now take the opportunity to even up with him, and the belief that he will be elected is very doubtful with many of the thinking people of his party in the east. He will keep his party "in hot water" if e'ected, they think by his bull dog, selfopinionated system of managing public affairs. The democrats of New York have nominated a first-class man, Mr VanWyck, and the nomination is considered a strong one, with good indications of his being elected.

THE SPANISH-AMERICAN COMMISSIONERS. The ten commissioners from America and Spain are holding regular sessions in Paris to discuss the differences between the two countries and settle them up permanently. Nothing definite is known on what line of settlement they will follow. There are a great many preliminaries to be determined upon. The matter of debts owed by Spain through Cuba and the Philippine Islands will come up for settlement. It is generally believed that the commissioners from this country will insist that the entire Philippine Islands, numbering several hundred, be ceded to this country. There may be no truth in this as the commissioners are enjoined to keep th9ir proceedings secret until final adjournment.

SOCIALISTIC LABOR PARTY TICKET. The Socialistic labor party has filed with the Governor its ticket to be placed upon the regular State ballots. There were 700 names signed to the petition. The matter will be re.crred to the election commiasioners. 'L'he ticket ie as follows:

Secretary of State—William Yochumi Munc:e. Treasurer of State—Frank Helbick, Evansville.

Auditor—Gustav Rempter, Indianapolis. Superintendent of Public Instruction —Charles Beam, Marion.

State Statistician—D. E. Meyers, Marion. Sudge Supreme Court—Philip H. Moore, Indianapolis.

ON the hollow pretense that it would be a rebuke and an unmerited one to President McKinley in his management of affairs, republicans are urging the voters of the country to stick to their ticket and vote it straight. No doubt McKinley would feel awful sorry if Montgomery county rebuked him next month by eleeting the democratic ticket-

Dig down to the cause of your sickness, if you want to get well and stay well. Most likely it's indigestion. The irritating poisons of fermenting, putrid food, left in the stomach by indigestion, causa headache, neuralgia, nervousness, dizziness, stomach nausea, irritability, and all the other well known symptoms of indigestion.

Tney also cause many pains and disorders which are often laid to other causes and hence are not easily cured. But as soon as the poisons are removed* all these symptoms and disorders disappear, because there is nothing left to cause them. Nothing succeeds in this like Shaker Digestive Cordial, because it prevents the undigested food from fermenting in the stomach and helps the stomach to digest its food.

Sold by druggists, price 10 cents to 61.00 per bottle.
