NO CHL'RCH AND STATE BUSN NESS. in entering into the governing of whatever part of the Phili• pine islands that the United States may take under its protecting wings, it is said that one condition that may bo insisted upon by the administration is there shall be a complete severance of all existing relations between church and State. Tt is, we consider, is a very sensible determination. Every country that Spain has ever owned has been priest ridden and has declined in intelligence and commercial progress. The Spanish nation itself has declined on account of it. Tbe priests dictate everything and dominate everywhere. It was so in Mexico, and it was a thoroughly priest ridden country, and decay was marked upon everything. It is not so now. Mexico drove out the priests from their strongholds and limited their control. Mexico is progressing now. The same will occur in the Philippines when the power of these church officials is abrid^. ed. In no country over which the stars and stripes Hoat should there be any connection between church and .state.

THE K. OF

P. PARADE.

ihe excessive vanity of men, old sniy haired men too, is often shown in affairs of a public nature, and never better than in the K. of P. parade at Indianapolis last week. With a turkey feather, dyed, stuck in their hats, and cheap swords hanging from their waists thousands of these people marched through the streets for hours under a broiling sun for the sake of exhibiting themselves and their plumage to the gaping multitude. How ridiculous it seems and is. The K. of P. assemblage was a big thing for the hotels, restaurants and saloons of Indianapolis, and they would content themselves readily to have such gatherings monthly, b,ut itanybody else was particularly benefitted it has not yet heen proclaimed from the house tops.

CARPET BAG1SM AGAIN.

A reign of carpet bagism may soon be expected in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Manilla just as soon as the republican schemers get in full possession ami set the machinery to working. There will be governors, generals and official positions galore to be appointed and robberies and political thievery without end may be reasonably looked for. It will be the reconstruction days of the Bouth repeated. There have been many unrewarded republican politicians since the election of McKinley, and they will consider now is their time, if ever, to obtain some of the spoils and they will have them if possible.

NO 1£X-GOVERNORS LEFT. By the death of ex-Governor Matthews at the Meharry homestead in ti north-west part tie- county, on Sunday last the last of t'uo ex-Governors of Indiana has passed :way. I fall's Catarrh Cure is taking internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of tho system, thereby destroying the foundaof the disease, ana giving the patient strength by building up tho constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. It is estimated that the amount of water precipitated on thisglobe annually in the form of rain, snow, etc., is 29,000 cubic miles.

When your stomach begins to trouble you, it needs help. The help it needs, is to digest your food, and, until it gets it, you won't have any peace. Stomach trouble is very distressing, very obstinatr, very dangerous. Many of the most dangerous diseases begin with simple indigestion. Tbe reason is that indigestion (not-digestion, not-nourishment) weakens the system and allows disease germs to attack it. The antidote is Shaker Digestive Cordial, strengthening, nourishing, curative. It cures indigestion and renews strength and health. It does this by strengthening tho stomach, by helping it to digest your food. It nourishes you. Shaker Digestive Cordial is made of puro herbs, plants and wine, is perfectly harmless and will certainly cure all genuine stomach trouble. Sold by druggists, price 10 cents to 81.00 per bottle.

INDIANA'S FIGHTING STRENGTH. The Bureau of Statistics has been attempting to collect data as to the number of able bodied meu in ludiana that would be subject to draft in case they were needed in war. The returns made by township officials to statistician J. B. Conner have rot been altogether satisfactory, many of them being on their face inaccurate. In 189G there was a total of G37,110 votors in the State. The statistical bureau figures that there are about two out of three men in the State able bodied, including tbe legal voters and those coming within the requirements of the war department, which accepts men from eighteen to forty-live years of age. Figuring on this basis there ought tojbe in the State at leaet 325,000 able bodied men subject to military service. The reports roceived in answer to interrogatories sc-nt out indicate (pit

Fh* and A 'lierlcans Aro -'artO'-s lu Purls !. "On aud aff-T this date," wrote Napoleon I to Fonc!v, "soo that tho English are expelled from Paris." .Siu.il an edict would seem a very larj rder at the present day, but it was by no means a small one i,i Napoleon's rime. What would the Paris of today be without its English colony? From Sir Edmund Monson, our embassador, to tho pale boy who files the English journals at Xeal's library in tho line Castiglione the English are very important factors in Parisian lifo.

There has been au English colony in the French capital ir many centuries, yet one might search in vain tor a similar French colony in London. The Leicester and Soho square districts, although owning to a largo French population, possess hardly a trace of the flavor or mien that- distinguishes the quarter the English frequent in Paris, and it is not a lifth tho size.

To speak broadly, Paris has within its walled borders a little London of many thousand persons—not squalid and impoverished, hut boasting splendid mansions, fine shops, hotels, churches, hospitals and libraries, and all these to such an extent that it is difficult to believe one is not in the British capital itself.

The inhabitants of this colony might roughly be catalogued as follows: Retired people aud gentlefolk who have seen better days, those who desire tc have their children educated in the language, business people, authors, artists, students, journalists and professional men, those who have the best of private reasons for living out of England and cranks, which term includes certain individuals who for some cause or other have developed a feeling of hatred for tho land of their birth. Nearly all are exiles of their own accord.

On Sunday the elite of the English colony turns out to the Church of the Embassy in tho Rue d'Aguesscau. Here for a number of years Dr. Nayes, who was formerly a Leytonstono incumbent, has preached, and here a collection bag goes regularly round, and is as regularly returned in a condition of comparative emptiness. For your Englishman of the English colony is either in a condition to help largely support the church and does or else gives nothing at all.

One thing must be said about the English and Americans who go to Paris. They support the city. Without their patronage there is scarcely a big shoj^ on the boulevards that would not close its doors within a few months.—Loudon Mail.

SPAIN'S LOSING GAME

Thing* Which Have Slipixnl L'rom He* TIRANP IJ» Thr«*c Hundred Years, Macaulay drew this picture of the power of Spain iiOO years ago:

The empire of Philip II was undoubtedly one of the most powerful and sploudid that ever existed in the world It is no exaggeration to say that during several years his power over Europe was greater than even that i' Napoleon. In America his dominions extended on both sines of the equator into tho temperate zone. There, is roas' to believe that his animal revenues amounted, in the season of his greatest power, to a sum ton times as large as that which England yielded to Elizabeth. He had a standing army of 50,000 troops when England did not have a single battalion in constant pay. lie held, what no other prince in modern times has held, the dominion both of the land aud .r-ho sea. During the greater part of his reign hit was supreme, on both elements. .His soldiers marched up to the, capital of France: hi.-, ships menaced tko-siiores of England. nain had what Niv^leon desired in va.u—ships, colonies and commerce. -monopolized tho trade ol of tho Indian ocean. A Famous Applo Tr«p.

The American Cultivator says that the original greening apple tree is still standing on tho farm ol Solomon Drowne at Mount Hygeia in North Foster, R. I. Tho tree was a very old one when tho farm was sold in 1801. The seller informed the purchaser that it was a pity the old tree was going into decay, as it produced the best fruit of any tree in the orchard. Tho purchaser determined to sco how long he could keep it alive, and it still survives, after almost another century has beeD added to its venerable years. But it shows signs of final decay, and the parent of all tho famous Rhode Island greenings, which has set its grafts on the orchards of almost all the world, will sooii be but a neighborhood memory. It is doubtful if thero is a more famous applo treo to be found in all Pomona's groves from end to end of the earth.

Keene's Quarter Cigar.

Tom Keene was a good story teller. "For ton years," so went one of his tales, "I bought all my theatrical costumes from one dealer, and as during much of that time I was playing many new parts in the old California "theater stock company of San Francisco my trade was a matter of considerable importance. When I was about to leave the slope and come east, I went to make a final order and bid my coetumer goodby. 'I'm very sorry you're going,' ha said. 'Here, Jake I' calling to a clerk. 'Run out and get Mr. Kceno a good quarter of a dollar cigar.' "As Jako started my ooBtumer whimpered behind his hand, 'Two for a quarter, Jake two for a quarter.'

WORDS OF GLADSTONE.

You cannot fight against the future. Men foe apt to mistake the strength of their footing for tho strength of their argument.

AVe cannot change 1he profound and resistless tendencies of the aye toward religious liberty.

Every leal and searching effort at self improvement is of itself it ksson of profound humility.

AVith the progress of we:.1'!! and tho multiplied!ion of natural warns and comforts there grows up, as society becomes older, a new system of social ethics.

the end be cheap.

If v. are just, we shall go forward in tho name of truth and right., bearing this in mind—that when the en so is proved and the hour is come justice delayed is justice denied.

Yes, tho diseaso of au evil conscience is beyond tlio practice of all the physicians of all the countries in the world. It is writton in the eternal laws of the universe of God that sin shall be followed by suffering.

It has been said that tho world does not know Its greatest men. Neither, I will add, is it aware of the power and might carried by the words and by tho acts of those among its greatest meu whom 1* does know.

Depend upon it that all false, all sham work, however it may last for a little, the effect of it is ultimately to destroy reputation, to tako away confidence and to act most injuriously upon those who have adopted the trick.—AVMliam E. Gladstone.

THE BEEHIVE.

It is a good plan to allow each colony to cast one swarm. Keeping the comb clear of green cells Will prevent swarming.

If t}ie bees, are swarming excessively, but little honey will bo secured. Excessive swarming is a failure in every way, but a limited amount of swarming is no detriment.

The kiudof hive is not so important. The bees will storeIiont-y in anything that is given them.

A good, fertilo queen is capable of producing enough bees in a short time to make an immense colony of bees.

If you raise comb honey only for your own use, it will pay to raiso it iu large frames, six inches deep and as long as the hive.

The worker bees may kill off tho drones at anytime. This they do by constantly wortying them, but principally denying tliem chyle food. They may also destroy drone broods.

A good young queen will lay when in her best condition 8,000 eggs daily. These workers live from one to three months, so that in an average hive Au.000 is not a larsxe number during tho working season.—St. Louis Republic.
