THE ROYAL BOX.

The coming child of the Princess Helenc of Aost.v, if it prove to be a hoy, stands a good chance of succeeding to the throne of Italy, as tho Prince of Naples has as yet no children.

It is reported from The Hague that on the occasion of tho coronation of Queen Wilhclmina several Dutch Indian primes aro expected tc be present at the festivities. Tho sultan of Siak, with a large suit, will attend.

When Emperor William wanted to order motor car lately for the short distance between the new palace and the Wildpark station, a French design was shown him, which lie is said to liavo rejected with tlie remark, "You cannot expect me to buy and use a foreign carriage hero."

Tho I'rin'-e of Wales has taken a great fancy to a pretty little villa at Cannes, belonging to Comte St. Priest, and arrangements will probably be made so that his royal highness may become the owner. The maisonnette is of very modest dimensions, but charmingly situated and commanding lovely views.

The ofTensivo weapon of tho ostrich is his lc}j. lie can kick as hard as a mule, anil it is a remarkable fact that his kick is forward, never backward.

Scorchers may not, as a physician says, make soldiers, but they have that quality in them winch makes other people run.— Chicago News.

There is no occasion for eurpriso in the announcement that "scorchers" do not make good soldiers. "Scorchers" do not I even make decent citizens. Boston Heraid.

Chinese bicycle riders do some funnv things on their wheels occasionally. They are frequently seen in the streets of Hongkong and Shanghai carrying an ojien umbrella or a fan, and in some instances with tho handlo bars removed.—Now York Tribune.

ZOLA AGAIN.

Zola has npjain been convicted and ordered to pay a lino, but the guilt of Dreyfus is no more proved than over.—New Yoflj Tribune.

If repeated fines will break up M. Zola's monopoly in tho matter of defending Dreyfus, the French courts will do it. M. Zola must begin to feel like tho Standard Oil company in Texas.—Buffalo Express.

INCOME TAX.

Republican* to Itnve Clinnee to Vote oo a liruct Tax Amendment. The adverse deeisi.m of the supreme court of the United .States on the constitutionality of tho income tax had the effect two years ago to array tho Democratic parry in opposition to the opinion of that court. The platform upon which Bryan and Sewall ran in 189(3 and which received tho support at the poll« of 0,M)2,t583 voters denounced that decision as having caused a deficit in th« federal rovenue and as having "sustained constitutional objections which had previously been overruled by the ablest judges who had ever sat upon its bench." It went further in demanding that congress shall use all its constitutional power, "that the burdens of taxation may be equally and impartially laid, to the end that wealth may bear its due proportion of the expenses of government." Probably no such sweeping and bold announcement of a purpose to reverse an obnoxious judicial decision was ever uttered by any political organization undar any constitutional 6ystem that ever existed.

The Democrats, not having a majority of either house of congress since that famons declaration, have made no movement toward adopting in any way an income tax policy, but Hon. Mr. Jenkins of Wisconsin, a Republican member of the house, who is an income taxer, has brought in tho following proposed" amendment to the federal constitution, which he proposes to administer to his party associates and to ask a vote upon at the short session of next winter. It reads as follows: "Tho congress shall have power to levy and collect taxes both direct and indirect., but taxes both direct and^ndirect shall be uniform throughout the United States."

This would appear to meet all requirements, and its meaning seems beyond the power of any court to gainsay. If adopted, it would be the sixteenth amendment to tho constitution of the United States.—New York News.

STAND FIRM FOR SILVER.

Geld Democrats Should Get No Place ou Democratic Tickets. Thero should be no compromise ou the part of Democrats as to the currency problem. Men who are not sound on the "monetary question," men who proved false to silver in 1890, men who are looking for a "now issue"—-iu short, all tho men who have dodged the financial question or who have given aid and comfort to the forces for gold monometallism—should be required to serve in the ranks of Democracy whenever they return to camp and should be given plenty of time to prove that they are no longer assistaut Republicans. There is no question of more importance to the people than that of the currency.

The Democratic party espouses the cause of the people, and it would prove false to the trust if it should reward a gold Democrat with an oliicefor treason to his party and the people's cause. Let Democratic leaders see to it that only those men who have stood loyally by their gnus in defenso of the free coinage of silver are given recognition on Democratic tickets. This paper will cordially support all Democratic candidates who have a clear record on this most important question, but it will not give aid to Republicans by supporting gold Democrats. Monetary "reformers" are weakening at Washington. Republican congressmen fear to push the Indianapolis currency system in the houso. l\"ow is the time to make the issue clean cut and decisive. There should bo no quibbling. Stand firm by the cause of silver, and victory will be secured.—Chicago Dispatch.

Tho Speculative Spirit.

The speculative spirit has been one cause of our downfall. The passion for wealth has burned up our prudence and forethought. We are the most shortsighted, wasteful, shiftless and unbusinesslike nation that ever existed. Out business policy is to mortgage the first story to build the second and the second to build tho third, and so ou till tlie building is 15 stories high, when there is a geueral collapse. The muu who can build his house of cards tin highest before it tumbles is called a man of enterprise and business ability. In six mouths uo less than 19 of our railroads have collapsed, and- in the 15 days following the last election 2b banks tumbled to the ground.

The J'ltriatic Mouey Miftrk. The Morgans, Carnegies. Rockefellers, Drexi-la and other hu*h priests tit the protection creed are organizing a gigantic steel trust, including 90 per cent of the steel works of the country Those "patriots" and "honor" men who swathed themselves indecently in the American flag during the campaign of lS'Jii at the dictation of Ilanna, whe loves his country so well that he doesn't want it to go to war under any pretext, urc organizing just in time to cinch the government on all sorts of contracts. Great patriots, those money sharks!— Fresno Expositor.

Chauucey the Weathercock. When he was in Paris, our own and only Chauucey Depew told the Parisian^ the talk about an Anglo-American al liance was all moonshine and that tlu only country which America really I loved is France. In London "tho peach'' advocated an alliance betwoen the twe great English speaking nations. All oi winch shows that Dr. Depew has determined to be agreeable under any and all circumstances.—St Louis Republic.

To Guarantee, but Not to Issue. General Green B. Raum sums up thf demands made by the monetary reformer now pressing congress in favor of the banks in one neat little sentence. He says tho demand is "that the government shall go out of the banking business by ceasing to issue circulating notes of its own, but shall remain in the banking business for the purpose ot guaranteeing and redeeming tho note* of the Iianks."
