HERO WORSHIP.
This country is now enjoying a teason of hero worship. It was Dewey al the beginning ol' the worship to which has been added Sampson, Schley, Hubson and others. The stock of heroes of tho late civil war is almost gone, and the pubhc taste demands a new supplyThis Spanish war is developing them, and if continued there will be plenty. IIow prone we are to hero worship. Six months ago this country knew neither Dewey nor tlobson, but now their praise is on every tongue. They appear in finely illustrated books and newspapers, iu wall pictures and even on lloor rugs. We must have heroes of some kind. Although our present heroes have had brief careers as lighters they seem doomed to as much praise as Gen. Grant or Admiral Faragut. Dewey and Sampson engaged in no naval battles until this year, yet we are already giving them as much praise as Commodore Perry or any other naval commander of other days has ever received. We "slop over" too much under the circumstances, and if any of our present naval commanders should meet with reverses, be defeated, how the worship would quickly cease.
THE CUBANS.
lo turning over the island of Cuba to us the United States has undoubtedly secured a white elephant and which for years will give this country much trouble and expense. The Cubans, judging from what is now said about them, are totally unfit for self government. Like wild animals they will have to be disciplined for years before having tho island turned over to them to control. Their present disposition as exhibited seems to be to oat and to pilage. They have been of little benefit to the army of this country thus far in the war. They do not seem even to make laborers in any capacity, but at all times are ready to eat. It will probably be a half century before the Cubans will bo in a suitable condition to have the island turned over to them for their management and government.
TIRED OF POPULISM.
They evidently are sick of populism in the south, judged at least by the results of the election in Alabama last week. Populists, republicans and all other parties combined against the democracy, but were defeated by a majority ranging from 60,000 to 05,000. Populistic ideas and aims are evidently unpopular in Alabama, and no where else do they seem to gain any advocates within the past four years.
THESE "GOOD TIMES."
Iu spite of McKinley and prosperity there continues to lie failures of m.tuy husines-s hoi.ses in various parts of the country, there being quite a number of I houses forced to the wali hint week. With the E.overnmeiU spending it mil-.: lion dollars a (jay, ami with ua i:n|\s! of wheat, hay nud oats in almost every locality, business should lie sjood with almost all dosses. Vet it is not. localities, the meeting of financial obligations is as difficult now as iu any tune in a year past, and busi IKES in most I lines not at ail lively or emrgetic as it should bo. The finaucial management I of affuii-6 still appears tojbe as heretofore directed by Wall street. There i9 no improvement whatever in the money situation and there will not be under republican management. There will not be until the silver doctrine prevails, until silver i6 restored to its position in the circulating medium of the country and until others aside from bond holders, monopolists, etc., are permitted to control the monetary interests of the country.
numbers of republican dele
gates to their State convention at Indianapolis last week opposed Hart, the candidate for Auditor of State, because he enforced in strict terms the Mull law which cuts off perquisites of office and allows officials only the exact amoucits that the law says they are entitled to. It would seem from this that largo numbers of people would take advantage of any law providing it would put money into their pockets. The honest voters of Hart's part* should illustrate their professions by sustaining him, but party feeling revenge may make the result otherwise, if elected he will still exercise his right as Auditor to continue to cut off perquisites. Xow tho question is does his party want that kind of a man in office?
IT is said by republican linanciers that American silver dollars on the Philippine islands are worth as much again as Mexican silver dollars of the same weight and fineness. When making this assertion these fellows don't know they are backing up populislic doctrine, that value is created by the liat of the government. It proves that, the silver in the dollar does not determine value, but the government issuing the money. These fello.vs prove too much when trying to...depreciate silver as nione\.
PE ACL:.
Spain has at last considered that the wisest move she can make is to ask for peace, and has done so. 15y the treaty she will lose alt her West India possessions. and likely th» future coutrol of the Philippine islands. Of course by the treaty one-half at least of the armod soldiers of the United States will be mustered out of the service. .- A large number must be retained, however, to preserve order in Cuba and tbe Philippine islands.
REMOVE THEM,
Mayor Stilwell at the last council meeting called the attention of that both to the row of old rotten frame buildings on Green street south of the Ramsey block belonging to C. MCrawford. They have lorg since beeu condemned as unsafe and also dangerous as a fire trap, ho said, and are yet permitted to remain. It is suggested that the city remove them without further delay at tho owner's expense which could be done.
THE
Newport Hoosier State last
week contained one page of sheriff sale advertisements where that official is seliing real estate to pay the debts of unfortunate defendants. This is striking evidence of "good times and McKinley prosperity," and the pufcli her no doubt, trusts they will continui
There is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by cor stantly failing to cure with local tre itment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh lo be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a teaspoonful It acts directly on the blood and mucous surface of of tho system They offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails to cure. THE BEEHIVE.
Look out ir robbers when tho honey harvest been: ,cs scarce. The way t. ^ct \va:c of a li^ht yellow color is to let it cool slowly
Do not expect many swarms and lar_ee honey flow at the same timo. Tho best time to introduce a queen is tho middle of the day when the greater part of the bees are at work.
If a colony becomes queenless and it is not diseased, unite it with another and givo it a brood frame from another colony
Second swarms may be controlled by taking out all cells but one after tho first swarm issues, as second swarms rarely issue unless there is a plurality of queens.
If frames of clean comb are given to newly hived swarms so that they can go to work at once, there is not much danger of the bees leaving the hive and swarming out.
To raise comb honey to tho best advantage thoro should bo good, populous colonies, and when they aro in this condition swarming is likely to occur ofton.—St Louis Republic.
