THK ouly motivH we can imagine that induces a few professed democratic papers in this district support Cheadle must arise from future promises of official pap to the editors in the event of hie success. How any one professing true democratic principles and favoring democratic measures can support this man surpasseth our understanding. We see little contrast between him nnd Landis. Both are republicans at heart and have been from the time they were able to exercise the right of eu If rage. True democrats will drop both as they would the warm end of a pokdr, and await patiently until they can secure men of their faith politically. Neither should be supported one moment by democrats. It is quite probable that this vear wfll end in the district the political career of Cheadle. He can fool nobody nguin with his demagoguery and pretensions. If he is nominated men who have always aimed to support for congress individuals of the democratic faith must wait until some one is nominated who doee.

CONVENTION NEXT WEEK. A convention of the democracy ot this district to nominate a candidate for Congress against Landis, convenes next week. It is hoped that the convention will not follow in the footsteps of that of two years ago, and through a foolish nonsensical policy nominate some one other than a democrat. It is a policy that did not pay then and will not now If a democratic conventiou assembles it should nominate democrats—not mugwumps, sore headed republicans, or political demagogues from any party. In following such an unwise course as this they injure the party and cause doubts to arise regarding our sincerity and professions, and rightly bring us inio the contempt of all sincere n.en. The same results will follow such work hereafter as in the past. If defeated let it not be through weakness and childish moves on our part.

Of the 21 delegates from this countv at the district convention It are for a democratic nominee only, while the remainder are for Cheadle or any man from any party with any political label in opposition to the republican nominee. The friends of Cheadle in this county should not lie and say the n.ajority of the delegates are for him for they are not. These 14 delegates want no demagoguery nor policy in theirs with the nomination to be made, and they are in this like scores of other delegates from other counties. The nominee must be a democrat or he won't go, and the Cheadle men should understand it now. If there are honors or favorable prospects in the nomination tfive it to some time-tried, reliable and faithful worker in the party. Victory or defeat the nominee must be a democrat, and populist promises or threats will amount to nothing. If the pops, have 2.'200 votes in the district as they claim, let them remember that one eood turn deserves another, and let them this year support the nominee of 20,000 or more democrats, and he will bi a democrat, too.

POLITICIANS' PAP.

Work on the Soldiers' and Sai ors' monument at Indianapolis still continues and is likely to for some years to come. Of all the schemes originated by hungry, scheming politicians to raid the State treasury the "monument" business was the most stupendous of them all. It has already cost near 8000,000 and the "work'? goes on. It would af ford an interesting table for reflection if the amounts paid out to the politicians under tbe head of "commissioners,'' "managers," "superintendents." etc., could be furnished the public. It is the most gigantic steal ever originated to tilch money from the tax payers, and it is much to be regretted that no combination of legislators could begotten together, and with the approval of tte executive officers of the State force a permanent stop to the work and send adrift every man now connected with it.

STEREOTYPERS' STRIKE. The stereotypers of Chicago struck the other day, and like most of such similar commotions they lost their johs and are now thrown out of work. They received from the proprietors of the daily publications of that city for their services $3.25 for eight hours work—an amount considerably larger than two tt irds of tbe mechanics of all kinds of the country are able to secure. That however, did not suit them. They were not satisfied to let well enough alone. They wanted 84 for seven hours work. Tliey failed in their demands as they should. Their attempted extortion was nipped in the bud, and many of them will regret the day they were led into the unjust movement.

NO NEW TERRITORY NEEDED. This country could not muke a more unfertunate move at the close of the present Spanish-American war than lo retain and annex the Ph'.llipine Islands, Cuba or any other country that may be secu-ed by conquest. All our traditions and esteem for the Monroe doctrine will at once PHBS away if such a Course is pursued. If Spain cannot nor will not foot the expenses of the war then turn these islands over to some other country that will take them off our hands by paying the war debt. We do not want to add any more country to that which we now possess. We are large enough in area in fact it keeps us busy to manage and suitably control that which we have.

STEPHENS' REVENGE.

A College Professor Who Teaches Ethics and Practices Arson. G«»iige H. Stephens, formerly professor of ethics at Lafayette college, confesses that ho is guilty of arson. Stephens is a young man of fine appearance and a graduate of Princeton. Ho went to Lafayette well recommended, but liis work was not satisfactory and he \v told by President Warfield that he must retire after the agreement which ho had signed on coming had expired. This led to a conflict between the president and Stephens. The hitter's friends advised him to go quietly, but ho refused, started a newspaper controversy, and mado a sensation. Tlie trustees gave him an hoar's hearing by the full board, and then, without asking Dr. Warfield a single question, sustained his course.

Professor Stephens left only to brood over his troubles and finally to begin a series of depredations which ho hoped would break down the college and de-

stroy President Warfield, who was at first Professor Stephens' best friend. He cut the ivy that covered various college buildings, then damaged the chapel organ, an instrument he had himself induced 11 manufacturer to present to the college, lie stolo all the hymnhooks the day beforo the day of prayer for colleges and threw them in a cistern. In May last I10 put tar ou tho benches, en the carpet, on tho organ, pulpit and Bible, causing a great loss.

Subsequently Stephens entered the chapel to smear it with bad eggs. He put the basket down and went to the organ, intending to destroy it, but there was a watchman back of the organ. He attacked Stephens and wounded him with a club, but Stephens escaped. His purpose was to prevent the use of the chapel the next day, Laecalaureate Sunday. Ho had entered by using a key. This key was recognized as the one which hat! been given to him while he was connected with the college. He had not returned it. This led to his arrest.

It v*as believed thart Stephens had set firo to Pardee hall, which was destroyed last year, r*nd ho was asked about that. He uttered a groan and then admitted his guilt. Ho said that to get even with Professor Davidson, whom he disliked, he went to his classroom in Pardee hall, piled mattings, chairs and other articles in a heap, setethem afire and then went out to gloat over the burning of tho building. He said he took unlimited satisfaction in all he did and tho next day walked about the ruins with glee in his heart.

NO-CROWN FOR CARLOS.

The Pretender Prefers That Somebody Else Should Rale Spain Jjst Now. Senor R. D. Cortina, tho accredited agentdn the United States of Don Carlos, pretender to tho throne of Spain, states that his chief has been tendered the crown and has refused it. "Don Carlos refused to take the throne at present, Senor Cortina continued, "as any sensible man would have done. The people in control now havo committed a colossal binder in engaging in this war, and ho will not be involved in it. They mnet settle it themselves, and when Spain is beaten and humiliated Don Carlos will step in and lead the wonk of reconstruction.
