A SPECULATOR'S LIFE. Tne UP* MIHI downs of a ^p*-cnlntr's life were never better illustra'eil than in that of Joseph Leiter of Chicago, the "Young Napoleon" in wheat speculation. Thirteen months ago lie began speculation in whest. He, backed by plenty of cash, controlled the entire market of this country. He was reported to have cleared in cash through the handling of 35,000.000 bushels of wheat up to May 31st this year 84,500,000 and could have retired on this immense fortune bad his ambition not have gotten control of his judgment. But he did not let go in time. Alleged friends proved treacbeious and in a few days the tide turned against him.
Wheat rapidly declined in price and he is now reported to have lobt more money than he had heretofore made and a million or two besides, and his father is to settle up his business. Like almost every one else acquiring great wealth suddenly he became probably too much puffed up with his shrewdness and good luck, and disaster followed as to be expected. Not one speculator out of fifty is able to retain money received through such sources.
SCHOOL BOARD CHANGE.
By the addition of another ward to the city and two new councilmen a change in the Bchool board has been made. A democrat, Walter Hulett, takes the place of Cal. Barnhill, republican, and for the first time in thirty years there is a change in the political complexion of the board. If nothing else good results from the addition of two new councilmen this of itself is beneficial. School matters here in the city have for years been run by a republican rirg. For school teachers most generally some relative of a member of the board, or his wife's relative, or the especial friend or relative of some cheap republican politician has been chosen whether or net the applicant had an especial litnees for their position. They have held their places year after year while applicants fully as worthy were turned down in most instances. In a year or so more this nice little game will be blocked and some of the old stereotypes will have to hunt new locations. Another democrat will be chosen next year and numerous changes may be expected after that.
DEMOCRATIC COUNTY TICKET.
The democratic county convention nominated an exceptionally good ticket OD Saturday last which the party can heartily support. Each individual selected for position upon it has elements of strength, and with the cordial and unanimous support of the party all can be elected. This county is close and has been for years, and it is rarely that either party succeeds in electing its full ticket. This fall, we believe with united action, the entire ticket can be elected as each upon the ticket is capable of filling the position and there can be no complaint upon that score.
CAPT. ALLEN FOR CONGRESS. Since the name of Capt. Allen has been first mentioned as a democratic candidate for Congress the suggestion has gained in popularity. He has an extern acquaintance through the district, is known as an energetic and useful citizen, has a good war record, and politically has been known for years as a working and reliable democrat. These qualifications will s^it the democracy and will gain for Allen snould he be nominated the entire vote of the party. Populism wont work this year. The candidate to make a close race in this district must be a reliable democrat.
FRANK HAMLET, the Lafayette statesman, who has been figuring for some time for some soft place where he could secure crumbs from thi official table, was turned down in the appointment of a colonel for the new Indiana regiment to be organized soon. He wanted the job but Col. DeHart was appointed but declined. The Governor probably considered that there was better timber for the place than a professional politician such as is Hanley.
THE WHEAT CROP.
Within a week probably the wheat harvesting will be under way through many parte of tha county. A good crop judging from the examination of the heads of the wheat is anticipated, they generally being free from insects or ravages by rust or other causes. Prices are expected to range generally at the start from 70 to 80 cents. ==5===
THE Journal of course prophesies the election of the entire republican county ticket. It does this every two years that nominations are made and never sees its prophecies fulfilled.

An Explanation.
The reason for the great popularity of Hood's Sarsaparilla lies in the fact that this medicinb positively cures. It is America's greatest medicine,, and the American people have an abiding confidence in its merits. They buy and take it for simple as well as serious ailments, confident that it will do them good.

FASHION AND FABRIC.
Military styles of decoration arc very popular for youthful jackets of blue pilot cloth, yachting serge or uniform melton.
Conservative tastes remain faithful to satin foulards, which this season are particularly satisfactory in quality, coloring and pattern.
Some of tho latest French gowns show a combination of taffeta silk with nuns' veiling, both plain and fancy. Iris blue is a favorite shade in these dresses.
Exquisite coloring distinguishes the new Scotch ginghams. Made up with yokes or guimpes and sleeves of white embroidery they have all the dainty effect of a summer silk.
The brims of very many of the hats turn, more or less back from tho forehead, with often the same characteristic at the back, though less pronounced. The crown is low and somewhat broivd.
There is a great revival of the use of taffeta silks in plain beautiful colorings in changeable effects, pretty dotted, barred and striped patterns and in weaves barred with satin in contrasting colors. «jfme of tho new summer costumes for afternoon wear are made of dark or Mack material in silk, wool or silk and wool weaves and brightened by tiny ruches, milliners' folds or pipings of bright Scotch plaid.
The graceful shepherdess hat is finding many admirers this season. Its shape favors the present style of trimming, ai.d it is found becoming to almost every face. The sailor hat continues to be selected to wear with most utility costumes.
Large, beautiful batiste collars in deep yoke shape, with long slender shawl points that reach to or below the belt in front, are added to the waists of some of the exceedingly smart and dainty summer gowns of transparent material or of foulard or India silk patterned with small, exquisite blossoms and leaves.—New York Post.

Lake Michigan has risen about eight inches since last season, perhaps in a commendable effort to keep pace wit\ tho growing greatness of Chicago.—Denver Post.
The Boston Transcript has been referring to Omaha as "in a remote section of the country." Nonsense! Remote yourself! Isn't Boston over 1,500 miles from the center of things?—St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Since the war began St. Louis has sold $2,000,000 worth of war supplies. This vindicates the basic principle ol" St. Louis commerce—namely, that everything comes to tlie town that waits.—Kansas City Times.
The St. Louis bakers will stamp the words Remember the Maine" on all of the hard tack which they have contracted to furnish tho army. This is nil unusual exhibition of enterprise—for St. Louis.— Kansas City Star.
The board of health o~ Vineland, N. .T., has posted placards in all street cars warning the public that "no one will be allowed to spit, or expectorate upon tho floor." That ought to be explicit- and emphatic enough.—Chicago Times-Herald.
JEWELRY JOTTINGS.
Card cases and purses of tiny beads, which have a quaint, old fashioned look, are beautifully mounted with gold.
An elegant flexible bracelet consists of eight sapphires, each surrounded with diamonds. these clusters being united with flanges of diamonds.
A red bohomian glass pitcher, so heavily covered with silver cut work that only touches of the color appear hen and there, is handsome and novel.
Much art is expended on hand painted bouillon cups of china. Many of them are things of beauty and when set in a frame of chased silver they become luxurious.
Very handsome gold rings for men have the entire outer surface enameled in strong, rich colors, such as green ami red, with one large diamond sunk in the center of the enameled band.
A chatelaine, with cardcaso, purse, smelling bottle and the remaining requisites, in silver shaded so dark as to be almost black, with a single diamond sot in each article, represents an elegant and fascinating novelty.—Jewelers' Circular.
NEW ENGLAND TEASERS.
Up in New England nowaduys one can hardly lire a bootjack at a cat without starting a rumor of a naval engagement off the coast.—Philadelphia Ledger.
Boston should not mind a little thing like a visit by a few Spanish war vessels. There has been no real excitement in Boston harbor since the tea spilling incident. —Washington Post.
Every time a New England coast resident slams a door violently there is a call sent to Washington for more warships, based upon the representation that heavy cannonading has been heard in the vicinity.—Detroit Free Press.
