Another Interesting Letter From
the Pen of Beecher Troutman. CAMP THOMAS, CHICK\MAU GA.i L'NE 12, 1805. ED. REVIEW
The vast army now quariereu here is getting aloDg nicely with the exception of the water supply. The pipe line from Crawfish springs, which is seven miles from the cauip of the 158tb, will reach U3 probably some time this week, in the meantime three teams hauling four barrels each make the trip to the springe daily which furnish about half enough water for drinking and cooking. In the viciniiy of our camp, la6t night, live wells were dug. A regimental canteen, where nothing but beer is being sold, was started this week. There are numerous arguuieuts for and against the canteen. Uol. Smith said last eight that he was advised lo put in the canteen by Gen. Brook, allowing tho men not more than three glasses per da), and that on account of the short water supply, and very poor water at that, he thought he was doing the best thing for the men. The Col. has received petitions and letters from ministers and church societies from all over Indiana, protesting against the "canteen," but he says these people are not acquainted with the conditions as ihey exiet here.
Crawfish springs is the source of a wonderful water supply, the water pouring out of a hi lside bright and clear, a steady stream about (thirty feet wide and three feet deep. Here also situated the Park hotel which was purchased by Mrs. J. F. Leiter, of Chicago, and presented to the government for a hospital. The hotel has 400 rooms, numerous large hallwayB and waiting rooms, broad verandas, and is thoroughly adapted for the puipose Mrs. Leiter intended. It is considered a God-send by the army surgeons, where bad casiB can be treated as well as nny place existent. About thirty patieBts are now being treated there for various ailments. Ihe 150 is etill drilling about six hours a day, principally in battle formation and extended order, either of which requires considerable double time movements, and with the thermometer registering from 98 to 104, with coats buttoned up and heavy rifles, it's no wonder there is home-sick-ness in camp. To get out of camp for any length of time, the limit being six hours, requires a pass from the Capt. and signed by the Col. and Brig. Gen. Most of the boys would rather stay in quarters than run the guantlet of.these officials, Our regiment is not as yet equipped to standard but is expecting to be daily, and until that time arrives our address is not likelv to be changed.
The weather here is unusually dry, duet being deep. Wheat near the park waa being cut, last week and is a fair crop in yield anl quality. Corn looks very sickly, being off color and the blades rolled up on account of dry weather.
BEECHER TROUTMAN.
To the Teachers.
Owing to the fact that we are very much crowded with other work tha' we can not well postpone, we will probably not be able to report on May examination before the middle of July. The Teachers' Reading Circle Examination will be held by the county superintendent on the third Saturday of July, 1898. Passing grades in the two reading circle books will exempt from examinations, in the professional and general culture bookB in examinations for both county and state license—a saving of one fourth of time and worry of the regular examinations. In view of the fact that these manuscripts are to be sent to the several members of the board for graduation, it is necessary that certain rules be followed you can learn what these are at the office. Do not forget that our institute ie the first week in August this year, and that your interest in these meetings is a measure of your professional interest. Make your arrangements to spend that week with ue. It will pay.
