THE EARLY CLOSING BUSINESS. Nothing has been suggf'6tei iii'vears ot' more injury to the business interests ot Crawfordsville than the eHilv closing movement inaugurated here seven or eight years ago by the drygoo'Js, clothing and other establishments. It has driven trade away from hnre that will never return. Neighboring towns eight dod ten miles away have grabb» at tEe opportunity to increase their '.business at the expense of Crawfordsville, and accommodate their customers by keeping open after dark as
loDg
as there is
any possibility of trade coming. Stores can be found open for the purchase ot dry goods, clothing, etc., at Ladoga, Waynetown, and Darlington up to 9 p. m., and farmers after closing up their labors for the day can frequently be found even at that late hour making purchases in those towns. It is not that way in Crawfordsville. If farmers desire anything in the line of dry goods or clothing they must come in by 6 p. m. or go awaylunserved. ^Something should be done to counteract the deadning effects on the welfare of the city by this early closing {business. It is Jeaid the clerks' union controls this matter, that is. the proprietors allow).them to control their business to] that extent.
The business interests, the future prosperity of the city, are all [of more consequence than the diction of 100 or more clerks. If the programme is not changed by the effects so forcibly evident to the proprietors of those early closing concerns, then other parties should take hold and see if something cannot be done to prodiicj a change favorable to the city.
DECIOCRATIC COUNTY ^CONVEN
TION.
The delegates to the county convention to select a county ticket meet at the court house to-day. Candidates for the various positions, like those in the republican party, seem few this year, in fact fewer than we remember to know for several years past. Out of the material offered, however, a first-class ticket cau be chosen that will be popular with the voters of the county. The delegates should see that this is done. For Sheriff, David Canine, the present official, is again an applicant for the position. Thus far he has filled the place very satisfactorily, and there is no logical reason against] him again being selected. Braz Merrill is the only'candidate for Treasurer. ITis 'standing among his neighbors is a sufficient recommendation for his fitness and ability to handle the funds of the tax-pajers if the position is given him. For Auditor, John A. Booe and Charles Benjamin are the only known positive candidates} that we have heard spoken of. No names are mentioned for Representative, Joint Representative, Comissioner, nor Cor oner. There may be two candidates for Surveyor. There are three candidates for Pros. AttorneyPaul, Hurley and Fine, and they seem to be about the only candidates that have gone out among the voters.
A SIXTY DAY PROPHESY. A number of keen observers of the present contest of arms between this country and Spain propheey that peace will be asked for by Spain within the next sixty days. Thua far Spain has made a very poor showing toward continuing the contest, besides that government is greatly troubled by dissensions at home. Although the war has been under way but six weeks, the Spaniards have lost a number of valuable ships and men, also nearly thirty vessels engaged in commercial pursuits belonging to Its citizens have been cap. tured as prizes. The loss by the Unit, States in men and ocean vessels titfe the opening of hostilities has been comparatively triffling. In fact, we have not yet begun to fight. These things taken altogether force the conclusion that Spain cannot long stand this onesided feature of the contest, and will desire to save what she yet retains by soon suing for peace. It is to be hoped that she will arrive at this conclusion soon.
CALLED DOWN.
A correspondent from Lebanon on matters regarding a populist convention held there Saturday last says:
Resolutions were passed condemning fusion as the most powerful foe reform ever met. One resolution condemned Joseph B. Cheadle, of Frankfort, because the American Standard, over which he exercises editorial control, remarked: "No real friend of reform can be against the fusion of all the forces opposed to the single-gold standard," and used other language condemnatory of the middle-of-the-roaders. Comrade Cheadle was called upon to apologize for this remark, and it was further demanded of him that he immediately accept or reject the congressional nomination tendered to him at) Frankfort, "which he earnestly sought before it was given."
THE ARBORCURFEYV
FROM SUNSET TO SUNRiSE SHIPS MUST KEEP OUT OF OUR PORTS.
How the Patrol Fleet Guard Mine' Field* and Keep Independent Merchantmen From ltunning Itecklessly About OVM'
Explosives—Work For Naval Reserves.
With war and threats of coast devastation by the Spanish fleet came the institution of the harbor curfew. The entrances to all the important ports on the Atlantic seaboard have been protected by the planting of submarinemines or torpedoes. These are for tho enemy. But meantime the enemy lias held aloof, and it is only our friends that have given us trouble.
If the old fashioned contact mines were in use, not a ship could safely enter any one of our harbors at any time. But the big floating iron pota filled with high explosives can be rendered harmless. They are all connected by cables with tho shore. When a current of electricity is turned into these cables, the mines become active and are capable of doing all kinds of mischief, but when the current is shut off they are dormant and can be bumped about at will.
The ship masters and steamer captains know this and take advantage of it. In all the protected harbors they havo been giving the navy department a lot of trouble. The captain of a merchantman, no matter what his nationality, is apt to be an independent personage and is prone to hold his own personal business of higher importance than the Interests of international war. So he Bcorns the new harbor regulations and steams recklessly over the mine fields, cutting a mine cable here and another one there with his churning screw.
For this reason the harbor defense mosquito fleet has been expanded to large proportions and is just now very busy. Admiral Erbeu has recently been authorized to equip 85 boats and enlist 3,000 men. In New York harbor especially has the presence of a larger fleet been needed. The merchant fleets of the world, which have been in the habit of running into the harbor at any and all times, are slow to learn that war is on and that tho marine curfew is an established fact. Some of them, coming in from China and other farofif ports, don't know anything about the war others know, but don't care. Among the latter are the Yankee captains. They have been the worst offenders. They are too fond of quoting Farragut and saying: "D—n the torpedoes. Go ahead!" There has been too much damning the torpedoes in New rk harbor and the patrol, boats and .laore batteries have
fcv
WARNING A STEAMER OFF THE MINE FIELDS, several times been forced to use solid shot as an effective argument in protecting the mine fields.
There aro a score or more of these patrol boats in servico now scouting about inside of Sandy Hook. Some of them are big private yachts which have been transformed for the service and mount single pound rapid fixe rifles. Others are Iriere harbor rugs with nothing more formidable in tho way of armament than a half dozen Springfield rifles in the hands of a little squad of naval reserves.
Is probably seems ridiculous to some of tho passengers on big transatlantic liners to bo held up by a mite of a tug. The process is an interesting one. The tug runs up, signals -with a squealing whistle and then sends a rifle shot across tho bows of the big steamer. It is like an ant challenging an elephant. Then a bluejacket, with an officer by his side, comes out in front of the pilothouse. The bluejacket has a megaphone, and through it he roars out the order to go back and anchor in the lower bay until sunrise. The big steamer has to do it, too, for she is warned that the shore batteries will fire if she goes on. Here are the regulations which are being enforced for New York harbor: "1. No vessels will be tallowed to pass Sandy Hook or the Narrows between the hours of sunset and sunrise. During this interval vessels must not approach within three miles of Coney Island, Gedney channel, Sandy Hook or tho Narrows. "2. Patrol boats will be stationed above and below the defenses. These boats are authorized to stop vessels, to inquire into their character or to instruct them hew to pass through tho mine fields. The orders of the patrol boats must be strictly obeyed. "3. Sailing vessels and all small vessels drawing three feet of water or less can paes safely through any part of the channels during the daytime. "4. Steam vessels must pass at slow speed through a special channel which will bo marked by buoys. "5. Vessels are warned that if they disregard regulations they will expose themselves to serious damage and will be liable to be fired on by the batteries."
The men of the naval reserves who have been doing this work must have coffered many discomforts, but they are
£tachment
me and enthusiastic. Not long ago a of Brooklyn reserves which bad not seen service was sent out to relieve the men who had been on duty for nearly two weeks, but the men on the patrol boats refused to be relieved went on with their patrol. 0.

If every woman who expects to become a mother would heed and read that great DOOK, The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser," by Dr. R. V. Pierce, chief consulting physician to the Invalids' Hotel anfi Surgical Institute, Buffalo, N. Y., there would be stronger mothers and healthier, happier children in this world.
In this grand volume several hundred of its thousand pages are devoted to teaching women how to take care of themselves during every trying and critical period of their lives and especially at the time of approaching motherhood.
The author of this remarkable work has had a lifetime of practical experience in treating the special diseases ana weaknesses of women, and is recognized as one of the foremost of living experts in this particular field of practice. His Favorite Prescription is the most wonderful medicine ever invented to restore natural organic strength and power to the delicate feminine structure which is .most intimately concerned in motherhood.
Taken during the time of anticipation it deprives this ordeal of all its accustomed terrors and dangers makes the coming of baby absolutely safe and comparatively painless renders the mother strong and cheerful, and helps to endow the child with a strong, healthy constitution.
Mrs. Mabel Jordan, of Swofiord, Lewis Co., Washington, writes took Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription until the very last day. We now have a fine, plump little girl over two weeks old. I suffered less pain than with any of the others, this being the sixth child, and she has good health. I got up on the tenth day and dressed myself—something I could not do with the other babies. Have been gaining in strength every day and feel well, all due to God and to Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription."
