THE FAVORITES.
The appointment of the sons 01 relatives of formerly dislinuuistierl m^n to positions in the army auu navy still continues, although there is no reason in particular for it. Ex-President HarriFon ha6 already a son who is appointed a paymB6ter and a son-in-law a brigadier general. The /Gartielde, Hays and Logans have all already received commissions for various soft jobs. J. C. New's son, Harry, has an appointment. All over the country it would seem to have been the aim of the administration to place those in tirst who had prominent relatives or who had been prominent in the republican party. The idea would seem to be to aim to perpetuate the republican party through this kind of work more than any thing else. Men without Bret-class references or unless they are relatives of distinguished republican moguls, have generally little chance for positions in the army and navy. Politics controls in these appointments —fitness is, it would seem, a secondary consideration.
4,
IN THEIR WAY.
Just why Fairbanks, Stutsman, Landis and a few other republicans are exerting themselves so energetically to have Gen. Wallace appointed a major general is not to be wondered at probably, considering the fact that there is a United StRtes senator to bo elected by the republicans provided they are in the majority. Fairbanks has not yet developed into much of a statesman. His principal ability thus far developed would seem to be in securing positions for his friends. Still he would be desired to be considered the "Senior" Senator in ability and prominence. It' he can get Wallace away to the army and far from political strife he would have him out of the way and some mediocre like J. Frank Hanley put upon to the job, he would feel alright during his term. Wallace, however, if not given something, will probably yet turn up as a candidate for Senator, and if chosen would be as prominent every bit as Fairbanks. Fairbanks' interest in the matter is tt erefore easilv to be seen.
WANTS TO BE A COLONEL. J. Frank Hanley, the Lafayette statesman, wants to be a Colonel of an Indiana regiment in this present war, and he and his friends are beseeching the Governor for the position. If the thing keeps on there will be no republican candidate for U. S. Senator. Wallace is out of the race, McKeen asserts that he positively is not a candidate, and if Hanley is appointed and goes to the front he likely will drop the hunt for the place. It may be, however, that Hanley will return in a few months as "a brave, heroic and daring" soldier, and have a stronger pull for the place than any of them. Thousands of men during the last war received official promotion after returning from the front solely from the fact that they had served in the army, and not from evidence of any particular ability for anything. That may be what Hanley is contemplating in now seeking an army position. If he has any particular qualification for U. S. Senator no one is aware of it, and the same may be said of others seeking the place.
WANTS A THIRD TERM. Wynkoop, the county surveyor, evidently believes in a third term, and more than that probably if his party will continue its generosity toward him. He has been elected county surveyor twice, and now desires the nomination again. At his first announcement for the place it was repeatedly said he was not a resident of the county, but was a student in Wabash college from White county. II." undoubtedly has a good thing in the position and hates to let go. The only way ia to give him a dose of defeat in November if his party is so foolish as to encourage any 3d term business in the county.
ALLEN FOR CONORESS.
The suggestion of the name of Capt. D.F. Allen, as the democratic caddidate for congress in this district, is meeting with much favor in most of the counties composing it. His record as a democrat, business man and progressive citizen is certainly satisfactory, and we are positive that no man in the party could command more strength. The Captain is at present in command of a company of soldiers of the 158th Ind. regiment at Camp Thomas.
It is reported that Newtown has been notified by the projectors of the electric railroad, which has been a topic of much discussion over there for some time, that the road will be built and that it will most surely pass through Newtown. The citizens are highly elated over the prospects and are sure that at last Newtown will take a big boom.—Waynetown Dispatch.
IT is questionable if those "enterpris ing newsdapers that aim to to send first intelligence of any important event of the. present war, will evetually be benefitted financially in their present strenuous efforts to dis ose of their daily issues. They are almost wholly unreliable, and anyone reading their ^specials" does so with a feeling of great doubt of their truthfulness. Less enterprise and more truth in their reports of war matters would suit the readiug public much bytter.
DEMOCRATIC COUNTY CONVENTION. The democrats of Montgomery county will meet at Crawfordsville in delegate convention .Tune ISth, 1898, to nominate a county ticket to be voted for in Novemler as follows: Representative, Prosecuting Attorney, Auditor, Treasurer, Sheriff, Surveyor, commissioners in first and third districts, and a Coroner.

If a sufferer will resort to the right remedy before it is too late, consumption can be cured. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery cures 08 per cent, of all cases if taken in the earlier stages. It has maintained this record for thirty years. Many of those whom it has rescued from the verge of the. grave have permitted their names, addresses, experiences and photographs to be printed in Dr. Pierce's Common Sense Medical Adviser. This useful book is free, and any sufferer who wishes to investigate may procure it and write to those who were once sufferers themselves. For a paper covered copy send 21 one-cent stamps, to cover cosl of mailing only, to the World's Dispensary Medical Association, Buffalo, N. Y. The "Golden Medical Discovery" is the great blood-maker and flesh-builder. It restores the lost appetite, corrects the impaired digestion, makes the liver active and the blood pure. Any medicine dealer who offers you something else said to be "just as good" is thinking about his pocketbook and not about your health. "I have taken Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical
Discovery and Favorite Prescription' with wonderful results." writes Mrs. Annie M. Norman, of Equinutik, Wayne Co., Pa. I had consumption the doctors said I'd die. The 'Golden Medical Discovery' cured me."

A Number of Collegiaim and Athletes Rush to Join It. John Jacob Astor's battery of light artillery will be one of tlio smartestcommands of the United States army in the Philippine islands. Its members will be of the finest typo. During the five hours its recruiting -office was open the other day gt.od looking, well made, athletic young fellows were, constantly crowding up to the desk, eager to enlist.
Henry 11 Ely, Colonel Astor's business representative, had the room opened at
10
a.
111.
For hours before that
time men had been assembling in the corridor. When the door was opened, they hurried forward to enroll their names. Harvey Duryee, son of General Durvee and a former member of tho Seventh regimeut, enrolled the names of the applicants.
Lieutenant Peyton C. March, Fifth United States artillery, who has been detailed to command the battery with the rank of captain, saw that more than 100 men were in line. He determined to weed out any undesirable candidates at once. He called them all together. "I want you men to understand what kind of a battery you are getting into," he said. "Anyof you who think we are going to organize for parade may as well go away and save the time of the recruiting officer. This battery is to be a part of the regular army of the United States. We want no one here who does not want to fight. I received word recently that as soon as it is equipped the battery is to go to the Philippines for service. All who enlist here join the United States army for three years. There is no connection between this organization and the militia. All the officers of this battery, commissioned and noncommissioned, will bo detailed from the United States army. All of you who do not care to join under these conditions may go.'' "Hurrah!" shouted a dozen of the most patriotic men. The others looked serious or smiled, according to their dispositions. Not one man went away. Altogether they were a fine bunch, the kind of material that any good captain would like to drill and fight with.— New 'i'ork World.

When we read of a railroad wreck in which a hundred people are killed, we are filled with pity and horror. There are other dangers in this life a thousand times greater than that of the railroad wreck, only we do not have them brought so forcibly to our attention. Consumption does not kill a hundred people at once in one train. It does kill tens of thousands for every one that is killed by accident.
