QUITS BUSINESS.
N. J. Clodfelter Sinks $18,000 in His
Railroad Scheme and Then
Quits.
A special from Marion to the Indianapolis News says: "The Indiana Traction Com )anv under which name the Clodfelter electric railroad interests reorganized some months ago, has been absorbed by the Union Traction Company and the Marion City Railroad Corupany. The sale was completed this morning, and Mr. Clodfelter retires from the railroad business, after a tempestuous career of five years. The terms of tne sale are not given, beyond that the purchasers give the sellers a fair price for the material on the ground
Hrnl distributed along the route of the proposed line. The experience of the Clodfelter company has been dearly bought. When the road was sold at re ceiver's sale, six months} ago, 882,000 worth of claims were cancelled. It is estimated that the amount of money sunt is not less than S12C.000, of which 614,000, was contributed by Frank jMaus of Jndianapolie, and S13,000 by Clod felter.

The Cabana were Doable to Meet th€ Lauding Party or to Receive the Supplier.
KEY W* ST, Fla., May IP.—Capt. Dorst says the failure of the Gussie expedition v.'as due to the fact that the Cubans were unable to meet the landing party at the rendezvous and the Americans could not land supplies with no one to receive them.
The arrangements for making a landing at Cabanas were made ten days ago by Capt. Dorst with Gen. Delgado, in command of the insurgent forces in the province of Pinar del Rio, and the supplies to be landed near Matanzas were to be conveyed to Gen. Gomez by a force of insurgents camped three miles back from the coast line. Both of the Cuban parties were unable, apparently, to appear at the rendezvous owing to the activity of the Spaniards.
Capt. Dorst is convinced that the Spaniards have a good system of communication along the coast, and that they can quickly raise enough troops to prevent the landing of a small force, such as the one he commanded, and the captain believes the only way arms and ammunition fan be sent to the insurgents is to land them under the cover of war ships with guns sufficient to beat off any attack. llien, he adds, the arms and ammunition should be conveyed inland by United States soldiers.
The captain says the company which landed through the surf at Cabanas had a narrow escape. The soldiers were fired upon by Spanish cavalry concealed in the tangled underbrush, and the fire was replied to, with the result that one Spanish officer and three men were hit. Only one man on the American side was wounded. The latter, a newspaper correspondent, received a slight flesh wound in the arm.
The Wasp and the Manning shelled the woods and covered the retreat ol the soldiers to the Gussie.
On Friday the Spaniards tried to hit the Gussie from a masked battery, and some of their shells burst close on board, but none of the fragments struck.
FINANCE, WAR AND MARKETS.
Japan Will Hold Her Golil in Londou— Early Gold Shipments to America Vrobablo.
LONDON, May 10.—Some £2.000,000 of the Chinese indemnity are expected to be remitted to Japan to replace the drain of gold coin since the gold standard was introduced. Otherwise, the Japauese government intends to hold the indemnity as a reserve in London, only releasing a portion occasionally for the payment of indebtedness for naval armaments.
The bank of England continues its process of enlarging the gold reserve of that institution, in preparati4n for eventualities.
The trade balance in favor of the United States, in consequence of the rise in the price of breadstuffs, is already estimated at £20,000,000. There* ore, heavy gold exports may commence at any time.
Money rates continue firm. Prices on the stock exchange were firm at the beginning of the week, on the idea that the war will soon be ended. American, Spanish and Brazilian securities are especially firm. The rush to secure profits brought easier prices. Italian securities were but little affeoted by the riots.
The speech of the secretary of state for the colonies, Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, on Friday evening at Birmingham, restricted all business, and on Saturday prices were generaiiy depressed.
The fall in American railroad shares for the week ranged from one to three points.

LONDON, May 16.—A dispatch to the Times from Madrid confirms the official denial at the Spanish capital that the cabinet changes are connected with a peace movement. The Times corre* spondent says:
The conclusion to be drawn from th« reorganization that they are seeking a peaceable solution of the question, has, for the moment, been abandoned, and the war will be prosecuted vigorously. "There was a prolonged cabinet council yesterday afternoon, dealing with the crisis, and several points were practically settled. Senor Sagasta, though weak in health, remains president of the council of ministers, because the liberals are in a majority in the chamber, and it would be inconvenient to have a cabinet chief, however distinguished, who is not chief of the liberal party. "Foil- ministers, Senors Gullon, Bermej'i, iioret and Xiquena, will retire, part for personal reason and partly because of differences on important policies. Senor Sagasta will choose the stn ngest liberals he can find, bm several of the strongest, notably Senoi Gamazo, have intimated that they will not take office at present. "It is hoped and expccted that Gen. Correa, who has valuable qualifications for his present post, will remain."
Gone to Arrange for an Exchange of Prisoners. WASHINGTON, May 16.—The navy department announces the L'neas left Key West shortly before midnight, Saturday night, with instructions to arrange under a flag of truce for an exchange qf prisoners between th« Spanish and Americans.
Haven't let Come to Their Senses. MADRID, May. 10.—It is officially
denied that the cabinet changes arc connected with a peace movement. On the contrary, it is declared that Premier Sagasta's ministry, when the new cabinet is formed, will continue to probw.ate the war with the full resources of the country.

County Sunday School Convention.
The fourth quarterly and annual convention o" the association wjll be held at the Baptist church in Crawfordsville on Friday May 27th. The program is ODe of unusual interest as we will have with us speakers of international reputation.
Win. H. Levering, for years a member ot the international lesson committee, will deliver two blackboard addresses on Sunday School Normal Work, and Mrs. M. S. Lamoreaux, of Chicago, State Superintendent of primary work for Illinois, will deliver three addresses. She will give e. practical illustration of her work by teaching a class the lesson for next Sunday.
This will be a rare opportunity for primary*teachers to acquaint themselves with strictly up-to-date methods. Questions may be asked at the conclufion of each address. Both speakers request that persons attending the convention bring pencil and paper. Plan to attend this convention as it will possibly be the opportunity of a lifetime to hear speakers of such prominence right at home at one of our county conventions.
