RIONEY VS. PATRIOTISM It is shameful to know that pecuniary considerations are paramount to patriotism with many prominent Araericars. There seem? no doubt, of this ic our present difficulty with Spain over Cuban matters. It seems that Wall street influence is as strong with {his administration as with the last. While Spain for her excessive cruelty to native Cubans, her insulting course to this country, the destruction of the war ship Maine, and other matteis, deserve a thrashing and should be deprived of all her possessions on this continent, it seems that there are several holders of Spanish bonds iu this country. Their interests are now jeopardized. These bondfa may be rendered worthless in a war with this country, and have little or no pecuniary value. Tbe holders of these bonds unfortunately have influence with some of our Congressmen. They have beeu exerting it all the time to prevent a contest of arms between the two nations. It is not national honor they look at s-o much as the money they have in the bonds of Spain. It matters not to them how many of our vessels may be destroyed or lives sacrificed, so their money ioHuenceb are not injured. Money is away over any other consideration with them. They have by manipulation it would seem, been able to postpone the conflict up to this time. These men are Americans, and talk loudly no doubt of their sacrifices and patriotism. The spirit of this country is or assuredly should be indifferent to the feeliugs of these bond holders, and the war should proceed when we have justice on our side as in this contest. The honor of the country, the permancy of its institutions is of far greater consideration than the intents or the wishes of the holders of Spanish bonds.

RESIGNED HIS OFFICE. Hon. John Sherman, Secretary of State under the present administration, resigned his positiou la6t week, giving as a reason declining health. He has been an office-holder almost from the first days of the republican party, and is one of the few politicians that from a pecuniary point of view has made politics pay, he being, it is reported, a millionaire, being able from his official position to take advantage of many things coming under his knowledge, to his own pecuniary benefit. He was somewhat autocratic and self-opinion-ated, yet at the same time continued to retain influence with his party in Ohio, and stood as high with it probably as any man in that State. He never could, however, secure the nomination for President, although intellectually superior to Garfield, Hays or McKinley and to that extent he was a failure politically.

WHY GOTT?

A good many republicans are wondering and worrying at the continued official favors being shown by Gov. Mount toward Dr. Gott. Said a radical member of the party on the street last week, "I can't see why Mount is so stuck on this man. There are republican physicians here just as competent in every respect as Gott and who have always stood by the party, yet old Mount always seems to be giving Gott something in which there is money, his last being the appointing of Gott as an examining surgeon to see if the soldiers now in camp at Indianapolis can pass muster." The only explanation we can give to our republican inquiring friend is that Gott is a gold democrat, and Mount may think his influence is worth something.

COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION. In another column will be found the call for the democratic county convention to be held June 18th, at which 191 delegates from tbe eleven townships of the county will make the selection of candidates for Treasurer, Sheriff, Auditor and other county officers. We trust a ticket of sound representative men will be chosen. If so, we believe it has good flattering chances of being elected. The announcement of candidates whose supreme diffidence has heretofore prevented them from making their wants known, is now in order. We understand there are two candidates for Auditor, one for Sheriff, one for Representative and two or three for Commissioner, but who they are as yet we are not informed aside from the sheriff.

Dr. Fitch Tenders His Services. Dr. A. P. Fitch, a former resident of Waynetown, but now living at Lebanon, has tendered his services to the government to serve as surgeon in the

army. He will probably be accepted and will soon be ordered to report for duty.

Mr- and Mra. C. N. Williams were guests of friendB here this week.

ORAPEVINE REPORTS. it is well for everyone reading up on war news now-a-days to beware of grape vine or false reports. There will be vast quantities of it come over the wires, there will be much lying and exaggeration, and much of th-i reports filling the daily papers found to be incorrect. The Spanish authorities are beeinning to do much tall liyng already and many correspondents for the big American dailies are seemingly aiming

to imitate them. Wnen th* report of a big navel engagement is made, it will be well to wait a day or two for the confirmation of it. There is really twice as much space taken up with war news by the daily publications than is needed.

NO TRAITORS WANTED. This war now between this country and Spain is in the interest of humanity and there should be no division of feeling in this country regarding it, and the people should all approve and encourage it. are warring with a cruel and inhuman race, the Spaniards, and there should be no sympathy for them from any quarter. Whatever Americans, if any there be, who byword or deed should show favor toward the Spanish nation may indeed be termed traitors, and from now on until the contest closes should be treated as enemies of this country. We believe very few will be found.

When wear begins to exceed repair in your body you are going to fall sick. The signB of it are: loss of flesh, paleness, weakness, nervousness, etc. The repair needed is food. You think you eat enough, and yet you feel that you wear out more tissue, energy, nerveforce, than your food makes for you. The difficulty is that you do not digest enough. And this is so serious it is worth sitting down seriously to think about. If you can't digest what you eat, take a few doses of Shaker Digestive Cordial. The effect of it will be to increase your flesh and make you feel stronger. You won't fall sick. Proof lhat it is in control of your repair apparatus. It's easy enough to test this for yourself. Take a few bottles of Shaker Digestive Cordial.

Sold by druggists at 10 cents to $1.00 per bottle.

THE WONDERFUL EFFECTS PRODUCED BY FLUORINE.

The Diamond Only Able to Absolutely Reglut Thin Powerful Solvent—Researches luto the Nature of a Hitherto Poorly

Known Chemical Element.

The alchemists of the middle ages believed that somewhere in the universe was to be found a universal solvent which would dissolve the most refraotory substances as readily as water dissolves sugar. They named their solvent liquor jilkahest, and what time they conld spare from the search after the elixir of life and the philosopher's stone was spent in the endeavor to obtain it. Science has yet to prove, by the way, that there was not more method in the madness of the alchemists than is generally supposed, for in the remarkable substance fluorine chemists possess material that approximates very closely to a uuivers-ul solvent. Its chemical energy is so fierce that, except gold and platinum, nothing can resist it, and eveu gold and platinum succumb to fluorine in time. The mere contact of most substances with fluorine is sufficient to cause not mere solution, but light, flame and fierce detonations. Dull, inert flint takes lire when exposed to fluorine vapor and becomes a bril iiant incandescent mass. Lampblack bursts into flame, while charcoal burns with bright scintillations. Only tbe diamond is able to resist this powerful solvent, to which it does not succumb even at high temperature. The similar element silicon, which can be obtained in a crystalline form closely resembling the diamond, gives a magnificent display in the presence of fluorine, tbe crystals becoming white hot and throwing showers of fiery spangles in all directions. Tbe heat is so intense that the crystals melt, showing that their teni perature has reached 1,200 degrees C.

Phosphorus combines fiercely with fiuorae. Prussian blue, on account of the cyauogen it contains, burns with a beautiful pink flame while from a crystal of iodine placed in fluorine vapor a heavy liquid distills with a pale flame. This liquid—an iodide of fluorine— etches glass, and if thrown into water hisses like hot iron. The last named metal becomes white hot when exposed to fluorine even iron rust behaves in a similar manner. Nearly all metals are raised to vivid incandescence in a cur rent of the gas, many appearing very beautiful, especially aluminium and zinc. If the latter he slightly warmed, it bursts into a white flame too dazzling to gaze at or describe.

Although it has been known in vari ous states of combination for many years, having been first discovered by Schwankhardt*of Nuremberg, in 1670, and rediscovered by Scheele in

1771,

fluorine was not obtained as fluorine in the free state until about six years ago, when the French chemist Moissan succeeded in isolating it by employing a current of electricity from 26 or 28 Bunsen batteries. Tbe current was passed through the compound of fluorine and hydrogen known as hydrofluoric acid, which is similar to hydrochloric acid. To improve the conductivity of the hydrofluoric acid it was necessary to dissolve another fluorine compound in tbe liquid. As will readily be imagined, it is not so difficult to obtain free fluorine as to keep it when obtained Every part of the apparatus used by AI. Moissan was made of platinum, with screw joints and washers of lead, which swell on contact with fluorine, all the stoppers being of fluorspar. Fluorine has a powerful aflinity for silicon, one of the principal constituents of glass, so that it was impossible to use glass vessels or tubes to contain the gas.

As regards the chemical nature of fluorine, it is a gas at ordinary temperature and is tbe lightest member of the series of elements containing chlorine, bromine and iodine. The attraction of fluorine for hydrogen exceeds that of chlorine and is so great that if a slow current of fluorine gas be passed into a tube of fluorspar containing a drop of water a dark fog is produced, which ohanges presently to a blue vapor .consisting of ozone—the condensed form of oxygen. The last named substance appears to be one of the few materials which has no affinity for fluorine. Nothing is observed to take place between them even when they are heated up to 1,000 degrees F.

So far all experiments had been conducted with fluorine gas, which, at the time it was isolated, resisted all attempts to reduce it to the liquid state. Six years ago, however, there was no laboratory—such -s that at the Royal institution—having powerful machinery for producing liquid air or liquid oxygen at the command of the investigator. In fact, liquid air itself was practically unknown. By the aid of this weapon Professors Dbwar and Moissan have succeeded in liquefying fluorine. At the extremely low temperature of liquid oxygen it'was found ttat fluorine did not attack glass, and it was possible to use glass vessels to hold the newly liquefied element. —JO. F. Townsend in Knowledge.
