MCKINLEY'SPARTY"ENEMIES. The maledictions and abuse President McKinley has lately received from politicians and the newspapers of his party over his seeming delay in not long sine1' declaring war against Spain is somewhat remarkable. In some parts of the country they have hung him in effigy as an expression of their feelings toward him. At Louisville, Ky.. a few days ago, a republican political club to give full expression to its feelings denounced him as a traitor. Democratic speakers and newspapers in the hottest days of the campaign of '96 did not begin to utter as malignant expressions toward McKinley as his own party friends have dono during the past month. Now all this iB wrong and contempt'ble. McKinley is president of theeutire people.

McKinley knows ten times more of the true situation than all the yellow journals and loud-mouthed orators of hiB or any party. He seems to aim if possible to avoid war and its demoralizing consequences. Is he not right in this? He has delayed for weeks or months, it may be, in declaring through congress war against Spain. And has not this delay been of benefit to us if war comes? Would we not be much better supplied in ships, men and in munitions of war now, than had the contest been put under way three months afro? Is it necessary to term him a "traitor" when he is aiming to do, as he believes best, for the people? We remember during the first year or so of the rebellion, old Greeley, of the New York Tribune, took up the cry, "On to Richmond,'' and it was re-echoed by all the little hounds OTV the country. In answer to this cry, McClellan, Burnside, Pope and Hooker, with armies under them, undertook to "On to Richmond," but they did not "On" to any extent, but left thousands of dead and wounded soldiers on many battlefields of Virginia, and their mission entirely, unaccomplished. When the nation was thoroughly prepared the "On to Richmond" was Euccessfully accomplished by General Grant. When we are ready to "On to Cuba" the work can be accomplished no doubt successfully, but it is not necessary to term everybody traitors in the meantime who have opposed rash movements heretofore, or until they prove themselves be such.

POPULIST NOMINATION At a convention of the popunsts at Frankfort last week Joseph B. Cheadle was nominated by the delegates in attendance for Representative in congress on the first ballot, his opponent running behind him about 12 votes. According to the law regulating the printing of ballots a candidate's name for any office can appear but once and on one ticket. In accordance with this, if the democracy determine in district convention to support Cheadle, no nomination will be made, and the convention will meet simply to indorse him. In other words seven voters of our party throw aside all preference and agree with one voter of another party to support whoever he may name for an office. A very nice arrangement truly if the goods can be delivered! Some democrats may favor this plan, and again others may not.

EATINQ CROW.

In the case of the selection of Mayor Stilwell for the short term of Mayor of the city on the republican ticket after R. C. Smith had declined the small honor, the republican managers gave us the beet specimen of "eating crow" that has lately been noticed. The truth is none of the party leaders have any faith whatever in the mBn and would gladly throw him aside forever, yet from fear that Stilwell would do them "dirt" at the ensuing city election they went though the humiliating businessof putting him on the ticket, and are compelled to support him although they despise to do so. And almost any other person would have delined the empty honor of a few months' term after Smith had declined it.

Umbrellas will last longer if, when wet, they are placed handle downward to dry.

NOT FOR CHEADLE.

A correspondent from rankfort to the Iodianapoiis Sentinel says: "Your correpondent from this place, in hip special concerning tho nomination of J. B.Ohf*dle for congress by the poi-utiste convention of the Ninth district, furfetched in bis conclusions wlinu he s«y6 the nomination will le indorsed lij the democrats. trict Have congressional candidates of their own this year, and it is the intention to nominate one for whose democracy neither explanation nor apology will lie necessary. Tho democratic party has already had too much dictation from those who have no inters.-1 in democracy only when it can be used lor thi?ir selfish purposes. This jeai- the party proposes to nominate a simon-ptirs democrat and go before the voters of the district askiug their support as such —pledged not only to the support of the "paramount issue'' of the free coinage of silver into money at the legal ratio of 16 to 1, but all other reforms as well for whica the democratic party has ever stood as the champion of the common people DEMOCRAT."

The democrats oftbisdis-

EXTENDING PLUnSTREET. At the last session of the city council it was ordered that Plum street be extended through the Elston Grove. Opponents of the movement need not give themselves unnecessary trouble. The street will not be opened. A new council, or at least three new couDcilmen will have hold in less than a month. It is just as likely that this work of street extension will all be done away with as soon as the new administration has taken hold. It should be remembered that twice before a street was to be opened by former city administrations through this grove, but was not. Influences also not now apparent will be brought to bear doubtless that will prevent it. So far as this grove being made a public park that is all a myth. It will probably remain as it has heretofore been to an extent somewhat, a good place for druokeu men to sleep off their misery, or midnight prowlers to indulge in unlawful practices.

FOREIGN INTERHEDDLING. In the event of a prolonged war with Spain by this country we doubt much it any if the great powers of Europe will take any hand. They have enough 1o do to attend to their own affairs without intermeddling with those of ours or Spains. France is watching Germany, England keeps close attention to Russi»i and altogether they are busy enough. Aside frorr, this in a pecuniary point of view it would not pay for any of these great kingdoms of Europe to be on any other than good terms with us. Our trade with them is of vast pecuniary consideration, and they want it to be continued. Again it may be questionable whether all the European powers would take a hand against us even if some of them did. We would have either England or Russia on our side if the others were favorable to Spain. No danger, we believe, of intermeddling of foreign powors.

FASHION AND FABRIC.

Marked favor Is shown blaek In gowns, gloves and simple, elegant millinery for Lenten wear.

There can bo no doubt about tho continued vogue of the shirt waist. The matter of its popularity for tho season before us Is settled beyond question.

Oaped nntl crlnkloU goods, many "of which bear closo rcsomlilanoe to the

lo»B

familiar and again revivod cropon woavos, are among tho newest fabrics composing stylish "dross" tollete for spring.

Large Iwtisto collars in doop yoko shape with brotelle points extending down the front to the belt are added to the waists of some exceedingly chic and dainty models for genuine summer gowns of transparent material.

The fashion of tucking gowns alroady amounts to a rage. This trimming appears on thin dressos, on silk and satin ones and on all other matorials whioh oan possibly be used for the spring and sumin or wardrobes.

Braiding in both wide and narrow soutache, rows of machine stitching, straight lines of velvet ribbon or gimp, cloth bands and ribbons and buckles continue to bo the favored modes of trimming on gowns not frilled or floundkd.

The skirts of the newest evening toilets are extremely elaborate, many of them showing a vory French melange of ruches, flounces and small frills, jetted points of net, lace Insertion and accordion plaited muslin in bluck, white or colors.

Spring jackets are as varied in style as tho little capes and shoulder pelerines, with and without stole fronts. Tho French models appear in three different lengths— the short, very jaunty, open fronted styles, the closed, fly fronted shapes of medium outline and the longer princess models.

Three deep flounces extending from belt to skirt hem are very popular dross trimmings for l'vjht wools and blaek and other plain taffetas and satins. This gives the economical woman an opportunity to utilize skirts already in her possession for gorod foundations, to which she oan add triple flounces of new material.—New York Post.

PEN, CHISEL AND BRUSH.

Lord Tonnyson used to prophosy that England would some day gain from India her great poot. In the light of this prophecy, the work of Mr. Manmohan Ghose is being watched with interest in England.

Sir Walter Besant's "Historical and Topographical .Survey of London" is well under way, and the first volume will appear soon. Tho work will cover the 200 square miles of the London subject to the county council, describing it street by 9treet. ''3 3 ifl'

Onslow Ford, who" Is at work on a statue of the late Professor Huxley for the National History museum at South Kensington, London, has been most unfortunate in his supply of marble. Twice he bad his work well under way when he struck blue veins, which ruined the statue. He is now at work on the third block.

Lilian Bell, whose literary style has been intense rather than witty, seems to have pioked up some of the latter quality in the year she has been abroad. She crosses the British channol frequently, but refuses to observe the Ivice to "sit up" on the trip. "I travel better flat," sho writes. "Like manuscript, I am not to be rolled."

Rosa Bonheur, the famous French painter, has been a great admirer of the red man, some samples of whom she saw at a "wild st" show in Paris. She gave a breakfast to Rocky Bear and Red Shirt and enthusiastically remarked: "These are real men They are not the simpering, gessiping, bowing animals of today."

RECENT INVENTIONS.

Tops are being manufactured which are apun by a current of air directed by a blow pipe into the curved channels extending outward from a oentral opening in the top.

A German has invented a neat little brush for the hat which has a spring wire loop attached to Its back, by which it is supported in tho crown of the hpt when not in use.

In a newly designed pair of shears the back of one of the blades is slotted along Its entire length to receive the back of a oomb, which is pushed in at one end and fits tightly to bold it in plaoe.

Horses' tails can be securely bound up in muddy weather by a neat little device consisting of a strap to whioh is fastened a oorrugated inner section of rubber to grip the knot in the tail when the strap is buckled over it

In a recently patented bed for invalids the mattress is formed of a series of compartments which can be inflated separately or simultaneously to the desired hardness, thus permitting the raising or lowering of any section to fit the patient's body-

THE CYNIC.

Real justice never plays to the grand stand. The people do not love aB deeply as they pretend.

It is a lucky man who can borrow an umbrella on a rainy day. When a girl goes to stay all night with another girl, it is called a "house party."

This getting married is like renting a door for the purpose of keeping a wolf from it.

When one man proposes a good thing, anothor man usually proposes one so mush better that nothing is done.

The pleasure in reoelvlng a letter lasts no longer than it takes to break the sesl. After that comos the worry of answering It

The difference between what a man thinks of himself and what other people think of him is a good deal like what a man asks for apiece of property and what the other man offers to give.—Atchison Globe.

ft: ANIMAL ODDITIES.

Tame turkeys can be trained to hunt wild ones. The roe of the codfish contains more latent living creatures than the whole human population of the globe.

Tho foot of the reindeer is most peculiar in construction, being cloven through the middle and cach half curving upward in front.

The cries of sea birds, especially seCgulls, are very valuable as fog signals. The birds (duster on the cliffs and coast, and their cries warn boatmen that they are near the land.

Glowworms are muoh more brilliant when a Btorni is ooming than at other seasons. Like many other mysteries of nature, this curious circumstance has never been explained.
