LAMMS' FENCES.

Cougrtpsinan L.indis' l'eotes in, tliis district are in bud repair judging from the following from a Washington cor respondent of the Indianapolis News ••Representative Landis, who led the tight against the present civil service in ttie House, and 6liould thereby have endeared hin.self to the "pmt workers," is dodgin» right, and left to smooth over, rou«h places in every little community where he recommended a postmaster's appointment."

Congressman Landis, probably like nine tenths of candidates running for Ootj»res9, promised every eonstituen a post office who asked for it. Of course he could not accommodate a tenth of the applicant as there were not ofUces enough to go round. Now the disappointed are mad. So far as the people are concerned of his paity it makes no difference hov many sour and disappointed office seekers there are. The people take little stock in their griefs and disappointments, and care less. A man whostarts out in life as a perpetual oflice seek'T is most times an object of contempt, lie is generally a dione in the hive of industry. He is little use to the geneial public, and at the end of life dies poor. However this class of men have some influence and tnany of these as in this instance will use it a«aipst Landis. It will be a good thing, however, if they defeat him. He expects to hunt or hold otlice all his life, and if they defeat him it will be a good check on his ambition. He has little of the statesman about him, and outside of assisting some friends to spoils is of use to nobody. The district sbou Ul send some one to Congress who amounts to something, and will work in the interest? of the people. In this connection it can truly be asserted that ttie nomination of a good, thorough going democrat would be timely and wise for Congress we have little faith however, in tbe success of any other kind.

THE INDEPENDENT COLORED

VOTERS.

A man named Knox, colored, at Indianapolis, and prominent among bis people, is about to announce himself as a candidate for Congress? from that district. There are said to be 3,000 colored voters in the district, and if Knox can secure the most of them he will greatly bother bis opponent of the republican party. And the question is why shou'd he not run and be entitled to the suffrages of the men of his party, as much as a white man all other things being equal? If Knox is not bought off or scared off he may make it decidedly interesting to some body pitted against him in the race. Since the war in which the colored man has been a lowed equal suffrage and equal privilege with the white men he has seetned to be a mere tool in the hands of republican political managers. They went his vote as it counts as good as the best, but nothing else from the colored voter. He is seldom rewarded for fealty to party do what he may for its interest. A colored man holding an important office is rarely spen ary where. Ie he to remain a menial, a tool of the party for all time? If intelligent, honest and capable, is he not entitled to some of the rewards of political labor? He should certainly begin to declare his independence of party behests. Knox, the Indianapolis colored politician no doubt realize^ all thie, and in striking out on independent lines has only begun that which should have been started years ago. The thinking men of his race will follow* him and will not continue at the beck and nod of scheming politicians.

THE CITY TICKET.

A good representative ticket for the city wu6 nominated by the democracy last week. Our republican friends must acknowledge that for too many years they have bad a clear swing in the management of city affairs. Tbe purchase of "Trilby" which was entirely useless, the $12,000 bridge on east Wabash avenue which is about twice what it should have cost, the very high cost of the electric light plant, the high rate of taxation now prevailing in the city, etc., is all the work of republican city councilmen. We owe a very large city debt. It must be paid and has resulted from the policy pursued by members of the city council who belong to the dominant party. TLc party has a majority of 300 in the dity, and unless they bring about a change themselves high taxation and extravagance will continue. We offer them as candidates much good material to select tron. They say there should be no politics in city matters, acd that men should be selected for their merits. This being so they can conscientiously support and vote for.a few of our nominees at least.

It is rumored that one of the popular young lady clerks at the the Trade Palace is soon to wed a prominent railroad man.

NO WAR YET.

The propppct for an immediate war With Spain is Dot at present very brilliant, notwithstanding the wishes of iiihiiv tierce new-paper pubiifht-is, nod also bond holders, cupon cutters aud money .sharks in general, who are so anxiously clamoring for war. Neither the United States nor Spain wants war. Its destructive and demoralizing tendencies are known to thinking pt.ople if not to these self interested patriotp. Thinking men will approve 1'it-t-ideni McKinlev's course sicco th1' Spanis-li excitement began, and will uphold him. lie is not going to aim to plunge the nation into a bloody and ^destructive war. notwithstanding the howliugs of a number of his political followers. He and his cabinet know much more about the exact situation of affairs with Spain than all thse fellows who daily demand war and talk in wondrous strains of the nation's honor. It requires a cool bead and a steady hand now to mude the, ship of Slate otcrthe rough waters that sunounil it. yet the President will have the credit in this emergency of having had it. anil all parties will

credit lor it.

LEFT ON THE TRAIL.

THOUSANDS OF DAWSON LETTERS

SAID TO HAVE BEEN ABANDONED.

Andy Christiansen Says They Arc Torn Up or Burneil--Carriers Atfrcc to Hring the Letters Out, but Are Frequently Compolled to Give It I'p.

1 or the greater part of the distance along the trails by river a*d lake and mountain pass from Dawson City almost, to Sheep Camp the course of many ti weary footod caravan is marked by bits of paper which have come from letters that have been torn to pieces. Bo says Andy Christiansen and some of his follow travelers of Albina, Or. Christiansen aud a few friends came out short time ago. Christiansen makes the positive assertion that thousands of letters from people on tho Yukon never retr-h their destination. To receive a letter from Dawson City, they say, may be accepted as a piece of good luck. "There are lots of places on the trail," said Christiansen tho other evenin?, "where you find quite a pile of paper in shreds. An examination shows that they are letters which have been destroyed wholesale. They have simply Lli torn up and thrown away, but you can a. eeTtuiu that tTiey were letters intended for mailing at Skaguay. "No, it is not vandalism, but despair. Of course here are many miners around Dawson who never expect to hear from home, aud these men will never know that their friends or relatives never received letters sent them. The missives are started in good faith, and the man going out agrees to put them in the Skaguay postofflee, but when he is struggling on the trail nearly dead from exposure and fatigue, hurt by accident or anything like that, tho situation resolves itself into a question of life or death for many a traveler. In an emergency he goes into his pack and throws away everything he can possibly throw away—probably leaving nothing but a few provisions and his outfit. Going over the passes and lakes, with their attendant perils and difficulties, is too much for SO out df 100. They simply give .. It is a evucial test of strength and grit. The f*w that pull through know what it means. "Couriers leave Dawson Oirv with great packages of letters, fully intending to carry them through. On the way they give it up in despair, and so, to prevent the letters being found and read, they are torn up or burned. When

I came out, I was told of it. .Dozens have tried it with this disastrous result. "A man can gc-t $1.50 or $2 for bringing a letter out or taking one in. At tbis rate there is big money in it, but few undertake it. One fellow attempted it in December. A hundred miles from Dawson he met with an accident that disposed of the question as to whether he would see the coast till spring or summer. "There is a government mail carrier who is advertised to make the trip from Juneau clear through once a month, but I give you my word that he had not taken out anj letters from Dawson in November or December. These stories about newspaper couriers and others who make quick trips out I am inclined very much to doubt altogether. From my experience in that country I believe these letters about Dawson City are faked in a Sheep Camp cabin or near the head oi the lakes and then sent out. As for ourselves, had we advertised our start from Dawson we could have had ail kinds of cffeiis to carry messages. In Alaska all a man wants to think of carryiicg is a piece of bacon, a blanket and a pick. "lake the experience of Thad Vreeland's party, for instance. That shows what yea must contend with. There vrere but two partners. They had dogs and sleds. reeland fell into a crack in the :ce and v, nt'in over his head. The dot followed hkn. By a miracle Yreeland's he-ad came up at the right place, and his partner palled hkn out of a very dangerous place. By the time Vreeland was on the ice again his clothes weru frozen stiff, and he was -nearly done for. As the sled had remained on the ice hisi partner quickly lighted a fire in the stove—materials for afire always being 'laid' beforehand—and cut and tore off Vrelound's wet garments on the spot. Vreeland was nearly stripped in an air whei' the thermometer registered about 25 degrees below zero. Part of their outlit was lost. If the stove had gone in, it might have been all day with him. After that they lightened their packs. i, "I met men who had made trips over the trail times without number. They said tho fact that letters were destroyed wan not unusual—in fact, that- enderBtan y'jgwas bad by the parties. The guidrs who agreed to try to carry a package of letters accepted tho money for the service, but said that if it came to a pinch they would throw theui away. On this basis of chance do the Yukoners conduct their correspondence with the outside world. "1 should not be surprised if the Dawsonians would bo just as delighted to receive mail and papers as food, which is said to be 'short' there. They have had no mail since last August. The only news they know is by word from incoming people." Portland Evening Telegram.
