The aequaintarc of Wallace who have known him and his career for the past forty years will wonder what particular claim or fitness he has for the posi:ion of U. S. Senator. Simply being a writer of fiction or going around the country aDd calling Bryan an anarchist does not. A Senator it is supposed should have some elements of a statesman, to know of the itical history and pre-ei demands of the countr,to b^ lice frim political bias prejudice to a reasonable extent, etc. lie should know thoroughly constitutional law, and its implication to the demands of the country. .Simply necause he has written
l,Ben
Hur" and
gained national notoriety thereby, or been U. S. Minister to Turkey, and become acquainted with numerous cheap politicians, doe« not tit him at all for the position of U. !». Senator. Taber, of Colorado, and Jones, of Nevada, were Senators, and were daisies too. They hirdly knew what they were in the U. S. Senate for. We cannot see where Wallace from Indiana would Intor his constituency any better than they did theirs.
THROW THEM OUT.
'1 he Labor Union of this city is an organization of over 400 members. It created strictly for the interest of aboring men. In spite of this a number of republican office seekers, and a few democrats too, have crept into the organization by some book or crook, to simply further their own selfish interests, and not for cne minute that they care a farthing for tbe condition of laboring men any more than they do for bankers, lawyers, doctors or others not supposed to use their muscles to any great extent. These office seekers are looking solely for votes, and after the nominations and elections are over will be seen no more at the meetings of the organization. Those of the order not looking for office are studying for some plan to throw these qien out. They should be encouraged, and show to these demagogues that they have no use for them. Men whe seek secret or fraternal organizations solely for office, as many of these men seem to be doiofr, should be set down upon at once.
OVER $50,000,000 DEFICIT.
Republican conceit is being thoroughly exposed through the operations of the Dingley tariff law. Time and again have the orators of the party asserted that the democratic party did not know how to run the government, did not understand how to manage the financial part of it, and when they again assumed tbe reits of power they would demonstrate how to do and what to do very soon. The republicans have control now, and the people have now specimens of republican management. The Dingley tariff IHW is a pet measure passed by a republican Congress, and in lees than a year after it is put in operation a deficit of over 150.000,000 is showu in the revenues. It is prov-ng no better as a revenue producer than the Wilson law which they descried so much about, but is a fine specimen of republican management, and proves that the party managers know no more about running the government correctly than the other side.
PAY OR STAY OUT.
Occasionally the REVIEW £is in receipt of some long winded notice in some newspaper of some candidate for a State office, and asking and expecting we publish the same free. We decline the invitation. Pay for your advertising the same as candidates for county offic's do, or stay out. The Indiananolie Sentinel, the recognized organ of the democracy of Indiana, makes every candidate for State office pay for announcing his same and for any other advertising he may require. We see 110 reason why the country press should not enforce the same rule. The REVIEW expects to do so at least, whatever other publications may determine upon, and elaborate notices of candidates sent to us, unaccompanied with the pay for the same will be thrown aside.
EEW NEBAKEK, of Covington, again "got left" in his desire to be chairman of the republican State central comittee, a man named Hernley, from ew Castle defeating him. Nebaker a^nears to be a back number in his party.
Vai
THE COUNTY DEBT.
The debt of thi« county has been reduced within the past three or four years until now it aiuounls to about #30.000. It ie along time since Mont gotuery county has been entirely free from debt,, and it would be indeed iv satisfaction to have it that way wgain, and keep it that way too. Taxes could then be reduced. However it seems iniposeible in mo9t counties Jto "prevent the politicians from piling tome d-bt or other upon the people on some pretext and therefore keeping the tuxes up to a high notch, and doubtless th'*y scon I will here.
THE general |sentiment among the democracy of this district appeats to be favorable to the nomination of a straight-out democrat for Representative in Congress in this district t' is ear. And this is the right view to take of it. Nothing tends more to the future demoralization of any itty than to continuallyjseek for nominee* who are only partia ly with you political l.eliwf and action? And again what have you gained even if you elect su-ti nominee. Oaly a temporary victory, which does no good.

HE blackballing of Major J. B. Bittinger. the United States consul-gen-eral, for membership in the St. James Club. Montreal's swell social organization, has caused a great deal of talk. The members of the club are
reticent and no reason is given, fact that the consul-general was blackballed while two other prominent Americans. Seward Webb and young Alger, son of the secretary of war, who were on the same ticket with him, were elected, shows that the objection to the consul-general was personal. There is no doubt that Major Bittinger is not persona grata to certain people in the Candian capital.
An alleged interview with the con-sul-general tha: appeared recently in an American paper, in which he was made to say that a league existed among the Fren h-Canadians working to the establishment of Canadian independence, caused a good deal of ill deling. Major Bittiuger denied the interview on his return to Montreal, but it had already done harm. Major Bittinger says that he was not aware that his name was to be put up for membership in the club and he declined to discuss the matter.
Major Bittinger is one of the big men in St. Joe, Mo. For many years he has been a conspicuous figure in politics. He was the postmaster of St. Ixmis under President Lincoln, and he was one of the foremost men in the Missouri legislature during the several terms in
MAJ. BITTINGER.
tke capital. Bittinger got his title In the war. He rose from the rank ot private to that of major. It is said by his friends that the reason he was blackballed by the high-toned Canadian club is to be traced to a charge that he defrauded the United States of funds intrusted ts his care when he was a revenue collector. When he was named consul-general the Missouri press lashed him unmercifully and it is thought that this fact prejudiced the Canadians against him. Major Bittinger was a prominent candidate for the mission to Switzerland, but failed to get that post. He is the editor ot the St. Joseph Herald and his personality has had much £0 do with the success of that newspaper.
China Cup Watch
John Curzon, a Polish mechanic, who was presented with a gold medal for his inventions, performed a most extraordinary thing when he succeeded in manufacturing a complete watch in the space of eight hours, and from materials on which another watchmaker would have looked with contempt, Bdys an exchange. It appears that the czar of Russia, hearing of the marvelous Inventive genius of Curzon, determined to put him to the t!s{* and forwarded him a box containing a fetf copper nails, wooiT clippings, a piece of broken glass, an old cracked 6hina cup, pome wire and a few cribbag**t6ard pegS, with the request that he should tr&nsforirf ihem into a timepiece. Nothlfig (jaunted, and perceiving a golden oppflrts'rrtty of winning favor at the court, Curzon set about his task with enthusiasm and to the almost incredibly short space of £ighfc hours had dispatched a wonderfully' constructed watch to the czar, who was so surprised and delighted at the work that he sent for the maker, conferred upon him several distinctions and granted him a pension. The case of the watch was made of china, while the works were simply composed of the odds and ends accompanying the old cup. Not only did it keep good time, but only required winding once every 1 three or four days. This remarkable watch is believed to be still in the possession of the Russian royal fapiily.

Meridian Antg.
Among the curious inhabitants of Australia are a species of termites called the meridian ants," because they invariably construct their long, narrow mounds so that the principal axis of the dwelling runs exactly porth and south.. These mounds are 6 or 8 feet in height, and consist of a series of spires topped with smaller spires, and when viewed end on, they show a remarkable resemblance to a manyspired cathedral.
