FALRBANK'S CHOICE.
Anion? some republicans it is quietly hinted that Fairbanks, the present republican U. S. Senator from Indiana, is secretly favoring Mount for dilator against Wallace for the purpose of furthering his own ambition and interests in the iratter. Fairbanks is anxious to be considered the leader of the party in Indiana, the author of all the keynotes to be used in future campaigns of the party, the man to be looked up and consulted as to party management, in fact the idol of the entire combination, the same as Morton and Harrison in past years were. This woi Id not be the case if either Wallace, of tl.is city, or Judge Ta)lor, of Fort Wayne, should happen to be chosen. The former has now as much standing and influence probably in the party as Fairbanks, and the Fort vVayne man is reported to be his equal fully in intellect. Neither of these men would play second fiddle to Fairbanks. With Mount the case would be different, He would be a mere puppet in the hands of Fairbanks. His mouthings, so common to the peopl of Indiana, would count for nothing before the U. S. Senate. Mount probably would never have thought of himself for Senator had it not have been whispered to him quietly through the Fairbanks coterie. There is no question but that the Fairbanks iuterest would much prefer Mount to either Wallace or Taylor. Ihe ambition of Fairbanks would thus be more quickly satisfied.
HARD TII1ES EAST.
The e.ist, the home of tho bond holders, the note shavers, the gold bugs, is at last beginning to feel the effect of the hard times, and the gold standard policy, so dearlv desired by them. Many thousands of persons in Massachusetts and Connecticut are .now realizing the effect of hard times in being thrown out of employment or forced to work at starvation prices. Many employees in cotton mills, shoe factories and other large manufacturing establishments whose pay per day had been from $2 to $4, are compelled to accept 11.00 per day, or remain idle. All these people were supporters of the McKinley ticket in 1896, and are now realizing some of the "prosperity" that was to come with his election.
HAIULTON COUNTY NOT IN IT. At a meeting of the republican delegates to the district convention at Noblesville last week, the delegates from Hamilton county refused to vote for the resolutions indorsing Wallace as a candidate for Senator and Landis for Representative. Of the seven counties of the ninth district, Hamilton county gives usually much the largest majority of any of them for the republican ticket and their actions last week has created consternation among the republicans of the district. They scent defeat of their pet Landis if Hamilton county continues contrary as it seems likely to do and its failure to indorse him after all the other connties have done 90 gives indications of troubles ahead for the G. O. P.
Money is merely a measure ot value, not a value. The higher priced money is the greater amount of ail things else will it purchase except those things which call for payment of dollars. Cheap money benefits the debtor and producing classes dear money helps the creditor class—the tax eater and tbe coupon clipper. That's all there is in the money question. If you favor prosperity among the former class you want money cheapened by increasing its volume,
if
you want the other class ben
efitted at the expense of the former continue the present gold standard,
The friends of the Lafayette statesman, the statesman too who parts his name in the middle. J. Frank Hanley, are doing everything to make him seem prominent as a candidate for a U. S. Senator before the coming session of the State legislature, whereas in fact be has not near tbe influence nor money of our Crawfordsville statesman, Gen. Wallace. J. Frank Hanley should get the endorsement of Hon. B. Wilson Smith, or get at least a friendly word from the democratic editor up there, YV. lient Wilson.
THE ONE TO NONINATE. With the growing unpopularity of Landis, the independent disposition shown by the republicans of Hamilton county, the lukewarm feeling of numerous office wanters in the party, the democrats can this year, we believe, elect their candidate for Congress, providing he be a democrat in thought, action and principle. A fusion candidate cannot, we believe, win under any circumstances.
"Is papa strong as Satnson, Aunty? "Whyvno, Willie, of course not." "Well, mamma said be had you on his hands for two months."—Scribner's.
THE SAME CONTEST.
Tbe political campaign this year will be fought on the same lines as in 1896. At this gold bug organs, monopolists and money sharks wonder. They seem to bo unable to comprehend why the advocates of free silver coinag" should desire a renewal of the contest after their defeat and the election of McKinley. The reason is plain. Tho people have had time to think and reflect, and they can see to where the country is drifting under the gold standard which the McKinley administration represents. They now thoroughly understand the means used to bring about the victory for the gold standard ticket in 1896. They now know that intimidation of voters was one plan adopted, the ppecious and lying promises were used, but above all they fail to see the "prosperity" that was to immediately follow McKinley's election. All these things have set them to reflecting, and they realize above all things that the legislation of this country is largely in the interest of the wealthy and well-to-do, while the producers, the toilers, are of condary consideration.
The question is much plainer now to them than two yeats ago. and they cau and will vote more intelligently. The gold bug advocites can have no reason to wonder why free silver teen desire the battle over again. A little investigation will open their eyes.
Enf, Nebaker,of Covington, is wanted by many of the republicans active in State politics for the position of chairman of the State central committee. As Nebaker has the capacity to do as much dirty political work as any of them he is undoubtedly the man they want and will probably be chosen.

if You Wish To Be Well
You must fortify your system against the attacks of disease. Your blood must be kept pure, your stomach and digestive organs in order, your appetite good. Hood's Sarsaparilla is the medicine to build you up, purify and enrich your blood and give you strength. It creates an appetite and gives digestive power.
Hood's Pills are the favorite family cathartic, easy to take, easy to operate.
Before 1886 the average number of labor strikes of all kinds in this country was about 500 a year. Since that date the average has been 1,500.
When you stomach begins to trouble you, it needs help. The help it needs, is to digest your food, and until it gets it, you won't have any peace. Stomach trouble is very distressing, very obstinate, very dangerous. Many of the most dangerous deseases begin with simple indigestion. The reason is that indigestion
(NOT-digestion, NOT-nourishment)
weakens the system and allows disease germs to attack it. Tbe antidote is Shaker Digestive Cordial, strengthening, nourishing, curative. It cures indigestion and renews strength and health. It does this by strengthening the stomach, by helping it to digest your food. It nourishes you. Shaker Digestive Cordial is made of pure herbs, plants and wine, is perfectly harmless and will certainly cure all genuine stomach trouble. Sold by druggists, price 10 cents to $1.00 per bottle.

RUNNING FROM VACCINATION.
The Girls Objected to It bat Their Outcrles Did No Good. There has been a smallpox scare in Atlanta, Ga., and wholesale vaccination throughout the city is the result, says the Baltimore Sun. An amusing incident occurred in one! of the big wholesale dry goods houses on Whitehall street. The shopgirls, of whom a large number are employed in the house, were on the watch, and when the cry was made that "the philistir.es are upon us" there was the biggest stampede ever witnessed in that dry goods store.
Girls who had been gazing in the faces of customers with looks of proud and haughty defiance during the earlier morning hours fled from their posts with wild yells of fear and it took every cash hoy in the house, together with the porters, to corral them. Some hid in the cloak rooms, others secreted themselves in the toilet rooms, some crouched down behind counters in dusky nooks seldom frequented save by rats, which they were willing to brave rather than face the vaccinating brigade. There were tears and pleadings that were heartrending in their pathos, but in spite of all the work went on until the delicate form of every shopgirl in that establishment was dosed with the virus.

end of the wke with the required number of witnesses. All participating were acquainted with one another and recognized the various voices. The witnesses are, therefore, prepared to swear, if ever a question is raised, that they knew of their own knowledge that the ceremony was performed.
Lynched for Hog Stealing,
An aged negro was lynched recently by a mob of white citizens near Sherrlll, in Cleveland county, Ark., for hog stealing. When discovered the body of the negro was lying across the dead body of the hog he*had stolen. Pinned to the man's clothing was a card bear lng the words: "You will never tell who told you to steal this hog."
The negro lived in a cabin near SherrllL The hog was of the "Arkansas razorback" variety and was worth about $2. For some time farmers around Sherrill have suffered from the depredations of hog thieves. Suspicion pointed to the negro. He was watched and caught In the act of stealing. The crowd quickly gathered. The thief was Btrung up to his cabin door thief was strung up to his cabin door and shot.
Marriage of Officers.
Officers in the Russian army are not free to marry when they choose. The restrictive conditions at present in force with regard to matrimony are very severe. In no other army in Europe are the rules so strict. Under no circumstances whatever are officers under the age of 23 permitted to wed. More than that, no matter what hla age or rank Is, when an officer desires to enter into the matrimonial estate he must first secure the consent of the government through his superior officer. If the groom be between the age of 23 and 28 the bride must brin^ with her an annual income of at least 3(0 roubles.
An Owl Fights Two Men-
It was an owl that caused the greatest recent excitement in Weldoboro, Maine. Tbe bird first swooped down on the head of Moses Newbert, lacerating his bead and face severely and making off with Mr. Newbert's hat, which was found a few days afterward back of Alden Burnilieimer's barn. He afterward attacked Elmus Shuman In the same manner, nearly knocking him over. Mr. Shumam, in his excitement, made a grab and caught the "wise old owl" by the legs. He has him now in close confinement.
