THE CANAL OF JOSEPH.
A« Useful as Ever at the End of 4000 Years. How many of the engineering works of the nineteenth century will there be In existence in the year 6030? Very few, we fear, and still less those that will continue in the far-off ages to serve a useful purpose. Yet there is at least one great undertaking conceived and executed by an engineer which during the space of 4,000 years has never ceased its office, on which the life of a fertile province absolutely depends today. We refer to the Bahr Joussuf— the canal of Joseph—built, according to tradition, by the son of Jacob, and wjhich constitutes not the least of the many blessings he conferred on Egypt during the years of his prosperous rule.
This canal took its rise from the Nile at Asiut, and ran almost parallel with it for nearly 250 miles, creeping along I under the western cliffs of the Nile Valley, with many a bend and wind-
ing, until at length it gained an eminence, as compared with the river bed, wbioh enabled it to turn westward through a narrow pass and 6nter a district which was otherwise shut off from the fertilizing floods on which all vegetation in Egypt depends. The northern end stood 17 feet above low Nile, while at the southern end it was at an equal elevation with the river. Through ehis cut ran a perennial stream, which watered a province named the Fayoum, endowing it with fertility and supporting a large population. In the tipae of the annual flood a great part of the carnal was under water, and then the river's current would rush in a more direct course in the pass, carrying with it the rich silt which takes the place of manure and keeps the soil in a state of constant productiveness. Ail this, •with the exception of the traditions that Joseph built it, can be verified today, and it is not mere supposition or rumor. Until eight years ago it was firmly believed that the design has ajl— ways been limited to an irrigation scheme, larger, no doubt, than that now in operation, as shown by the traces of abandc ned canals and by tJhe slow aggregation otf waste water which had accumulated in the Birket el Querun, but still essentially the same in oharacter. Many accounts have been written by Greek and Roman historians, such as Herodotus, Strabo, Mutianus and Pliny and repeated in monkish legends or portrayed in the mape of the Middle Ages, which agreed with the folklore of the district. These tales explained that the canal dug by the ancient Israelite served to carry the surplus waters of the Nile into an extensive lake lying south of the Fayoum, and so large that it not only modified the climate, tempering the arid winds of the desert and converting them into the balmy airs which nourished the vines and the olives into a fullness and fragrance unknown in any part ot the country, but also added to the food supply of the land such immense quantities' of fltfh that the royal prerogative of the right of piscary at the great weir was valued at $250,000 annually. This lake was Raid to be 460 miles round, and to be navigated by a fleet of vessels, and the whole circumference was the scene of 1 Industry and prosperity.'—Engineering.
You Can Have Your Eye Tattooed. The latest discovery of scientific medical men is that the human eye may be tattooed any color, it is now quite within the bounds of possibility tor even doctors to tattoo a man's ey» bright scarlet or green. Of course, I eyes are tattooed only In cases wihere •ne of Musm is blind and has assumed In consequence a peculiar dead and ghaatly appearance. An eye in this condition will entirely disfigure a face, but a modern oculist may color one of these "dead" eyes and restore it to its natural appearance, so that nothing but tbe closest scrutiny can detect the difference between it and its fellow. The operation of tattooing is performed by first treating the eye with cocaine until booomee absolutely senseless to pain. When all to ready the part to be operated upon is covered toiuUr wKli India ink of the required color. The tattooing is then performed by means of a little electrical machine which operates, a specialty nesdle.—Answers.

HISTORIC OLD WELL.
TO 6E FILLED BECAUSE OF ITS DISEASE POWER.

A Great "Health Giving" Spring Found to Be Full of Sewage Bacteria—Alore Dangerous Than the Bengal Tiger.
HE great Northern Liberty life giving Ponce de Leon springs of eternal youth well, situated on oth street, between I and streets northwest, has been abandoned and filled up by orders of the commissioners, who
found upon an analysis made of the water that instead of containing lithia in large quantities, it was the home of billions of sewage bacteria, says the Washington Post. This animal, while not formidable of shape, is even more dangerous than the Bengal tiger, or the Rocky Mountain goat, and acts as the advance agent of typhoid:
The great Northern Liberty weir Is as old as Washington itself, and some •persons claim that it is even older, being one of the espocial points of vantage noted in this' locality by
George Washington when he wtis traveling about tbe country looking for a site on which to found a city bearing his name. And it is further averred that when t*ie father of his country was a resident of the newly founded city his body servant used to journey to the Northern Liberty well each morning with a Jug, fill it with the clear, sparkling waters of the well, and take it home to by used as drinking water for the gallant general. And even further, it is stated that after a ball or reception, when the general's home had been the gathering place for convivial spirits, that the journey to the well was repeated several times in the course of the morning, and It Is a well known fact that the general was never'a sufferer from headaches. Knowing all these things, it is not Btrange that the inhabitants of the neighborhood should have gathered together around the old well a few days ago when the work of filling it up was begun and uttered protests loud and long against such an action. But the employes of the engineering department heeded not the pleadings of the multitude, and proceeded with their work the celebrated hole In the ground was soon no more.
The water of this well was supposed to have been identical with that sold from a private spring not more than 100 feet from it,and which is advertised as a panacea for all the ills that flesh is heir to. This water brings a market value of 25 cents a gallon, and It was suggested by many that with the well the spring might do more business. This suggestion carried no weight at the health office, and the water from the private spring may not be allowed to be dispensed throughout the city much longer, as the report of the health department for 1M6 rates the spring as "suspicious—sewage baotsria," and it is understood that a recommendation will be made to tbe commissioners that it be closed.

The mystery of womatihood is full of deep unanswerable enigmas. Why should women be compelled to suffer simply because they are women Why is it that the source of their highest joys is at the same time the causc of their greatest wretchedness The very attributes which make it possible for women to be happy wives and mothers also render them liable to the utmost physical misery and pain.
The sufferings of body and mind caused by some weakness of the distinctly feminine organs are so almost universal among women that the question might well be asked: "Is this Nature's punishment for the crime of being a woman
The true answer is No! These sofferings are neither natural nor necessary. They would not exist if the organism was healthy. No woman ought to endure such troubles. There is no need of it. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription is a perfect and positive cure for feminine weakness and disease.
It gives health and strength to the special organs and nerve-centres heals {nomination stops weakening drains promotes functional regularity, and restores the normal, vigorous and painless condition which Nature intended.
It is the only medicine of its kind invented by an educated and experienced physician. It is the only medicine which makes baby's coining safe and comparatively painless.
