OolU, Diamond unci Coal Mines In South Africa. While there is little doubt that with proper development of its agricultural and pastoral resources South Africa could be maile self-supporting, the successful development of these industries depends, nevertheless, upon t!he creation of local markets through the stimulus given by mining operations, says the North American Review. Whatever may contribute to the extension of the commerce and trade of South Africa, the immediate future of the country is dependent primarily upon the development of its mineral resources. Probably no other event has so impressed this fact upon the minds of the people of the country at large as the dire straits to Which they have been reduced 'by the rinderpest epidemic. Indeed, upon two previous memorable occasions South Africa has been saved from industrial disaster by the stimulus given to trade through the development of the diamond industry in one instance and the development of the gold industry in the other. The Deus ex machina to again save the country will be the expansion of the mineral Industry. With the exception of mining of gold, diamonds and ooal there have been no considerable exploitations of its mineral resources. Ooal, fortunately, exists in many parts of the country and it 'has been estimated that the known coal-fields represent an area of 56,000 square miles,

Which is equal in extent to the state of Iowa. There exist in some parts of the country large deposits of iron con tiguous to the coal-fields, but as yet the economic conditions have not favored the development of that industry. Lead, silver, cinabar, tin and other metals are also found in many parts of the country but have not been remuneratively worked. Among the mining countries of SJath Africa the Transvaal is facile princeps, and is In all probability destined to maintain its paramount position though, as is well known, South Africa is "a country of surprises," and it is possible of course, though not probable, that within its great extent other equally important districts may be discovered.

AN AMERICAN LUXURY. One Shivers Abroad Because Coal Is so Dear. "The thing I especially enjoyed after a somewhat lengthy sojourn on the other side was a real genuine American grate fire," commenced the traveler,' to the Detroit Free Presa. "In London I felt as if I was burning something very precious with the landlady charging 6d a scuttle far ooal. I remember sitting around a stove in an English hotel. The weather was cold and the coal in the stove bunched together. I took a poker and stirred it up.

That makes it burn faster,' commented the landlord gravely. "That's Just what I want,' I replied. "A red-faced, hearty Gnglisman broke in: 'You Americans are deucedly thhi-blooded, don't you know?' "Then in Italy you tfhiver about all winter and in Germany those big, high crockery stoves never seem to thaw you out. So when I arrived in America in midwinter I had a Jolly, big fire in the room at my hotel and I piled on the coal, knowing that it would not break my bank, in spite of the prices of the big, abominable coal trust. But after one has paid 6d a scuttle for a mlshty little scuttle of ooal he does not feel disposed to criticise the trust. I felt like a lord, 'thin-blooded American,' thoufft I might be, and was Just in the mood to read and appreciate that agreeable little volume, "The Reveries ot

a Bachelor.' Those rever

ies would not seem half so pleasing when read before the smudge of a peattre in Germany or before the skimpy grate fire of a few pine cones in Italy—not the Italy of sunshine but the Italv of the oold, disagreeable, wet days.'

A Papuan Feast.

According to a recent visitor to t!he Island of Papua, tbe basis of exchange there is arrack or Java ram, one-half gallon of which is reckoned equal to one day's work at fishing or rattan qutbLng. No money, is used. "When this nectar of the Papuan enters a home every occupation is dropped and tie family devotes all its attention with enthusiastic energy to its consumption. Their efforts never flag while the rum lasts or strength remains. The resulting stupefaction lasts for days, but oil reoovery the femily cheerfully proceeds by persevering industry to acquire the means of procuring more." Arrack, we learn from the same authority, Is wijttoout a rival, as "the most villainous Intoxicant known" and its only competitor in the affections of the Papuan is roast wild pig. Together, they are said to be to the Papuan simply irresistible.— Westminster Gazette.

A good joke on a schoolma'am comes from Cumberland Gap, and is told by the Middlesborough News. A lady teacher told one of the boys to name all the presidents, and when he replied he couldn't the teacher said: I "When I was as old as you I could name all the presidents in their order." The boy replied: "There were and fills the circulation with the life-giving

CONDEMNED.

When an innocent man ia condemned for any crime he doesn't lose hope. His lawyers appeal from one court to another. They are bound to save him, if he can be saved. It is the same way with & good doctor when his patient seems condemned to death by disease.

But doctors make mistakes sometimes they lose heart too soon. After they have tried everything they know ana the patient is no better, they think there is nothing more to be done. They don't always get at the root of the disease. They frequently give a patient up to die of consumption, and are afterwards surprised to see him get strong and well again.

Mrs. W. B. Duncan, of Arlington, Phelps Co., Mo., writes: "My husband took four bottles of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery when he was (as he thought) almost into consumption, and we were very thankful that such a medicine could be found. I wish all persons troubled with cough would take it. L,ong may the Golden Medical Discovery' and
