GEN. WALLACE FOR SENATOR. .If long winded newspaper articles are to elect Geo. Wallace U. S. senator, the Crawfordsville Journal will certairly agree to furnish tbem. However son ething other than fulsome eulogies and high eouucting sentences are necessary. There are other men o* bisjparty in the State fu'lv and probably better equipped mentally for the position than he. What has Wallace ever done in particular maj- be asked that would entitle hiin to this place? The simple fact |that he is a literary man and the author of "Ben Hur" certainly does not. He was a very ordinary lawyer when |a practitioner at the Montgomery county bar, and wae a pigmy along f-ide of McDonald, James Wilson, JoQn Butler and other legal lights of |that]*day in this county. If an ordinary lawyer he would no doubt be an ordinary law maker it a Senator. Can anybody see where he has any claims on his party? He has received two or thrc-e big f«»t|offices from it since the war. ^Republicana say he was never known to make any donations during campaign years to further the party's interests, but kept hUhasd tightly on his pocKet book. Does any one know of him making any liberal cash contributions to help along his party? If so, speak out and let the fact be known. Astute leaders of his party, men who have worke.d steadily in the harness, say Wallace is not the individual for the pisce of U. S. Senator, He is deficient in many requisites, and his mere literary reputation will not in particular aid him. He has had little legislative experience. He at times iB extremely fanatical, and lacks the cool, calculating mental balance necessary to a good national law maker. His going over the country last year denouncing
Bryan as an anarchist, a mac mentally, morally acd socially hie equal, indicates to some extent the trend of Wallace's mind. He considered probably |his denunciation of Bryan as argument favorable to the republican platform, but the thinkers of his party did not view it in that light. They looked upon it as anything else than of benefit to their party, and were glad when Wallace was through. It's another wise thing to do —catch the rabbit before you cook himThe republicans must elect a majority of the legislature of Indiana before they elect a U. S. Senator. The democracy of Indiana propose to take a hand in the contest next year. The republicans will find their ancient enemy in line for the con est. The prosperity to come with McKinley's election is not seen nor felt yet, and the voters of 1896 are doirg much thinking now. It will be well for the Journal to await a year yet before pusLing Wallace forward. The reaction may prove fatal to its pst candidate.
THAT "PROSPERITY." The substantial character of the revival of prosperity is found in the present condi ion of the iron and steel industry, universally recognized as a faithful barometer of trade.—Journal.
The Journal and similar republican publications are simply working a game of make believe. The intelligent people of this country see very few indications yet of returning prosperity, although we ®ere to have it just so soon as McKinley was elected which event occurred almost a year ago. Dollar-a-bushel wheat i6 not alone going to bring about an era of better financial times. To be sure there has been a revival of business in some lines, but this was absolutely nec ssary to supply long delayed demands. The railways and some iron industries have more to attend to now than a ear ago, but how long, we 3sk, is this to continue? Does anybody see anything permanent about it? Has this increased activity in some commercial lineB come to stay? There has not been day in weeks past in which some manufacturing interest gome where in the country has reduced the hours of labor of its employees or reduced their wages? Is this some of the Journal's evidences of returning prosperit) Daily papers in the large and medium sized cities of the country time and again report business failures since "prosperity" sot in. Reason: Dull business and slow collections. 1s there anything of a "substantial character" in this species of prosperity? It is simply a case of "whistling through a grave yard to keep up courage," in this kind of twaddle about prosperity. Republican party leaders expect their organs to do it whether or not there is any foundation for it
THE OHIO ELECTION.
The State election in Ohio occurs vithin the next three weeks. For a State campaign it has been very exclt ine and large crowde have attended where the political issues were discuss ed. It is really a contest between Han
na and corruption on one side and the' popular will and honesty in politics on the other. We tear the money power ie too great to ba overcome. Hauna wants to be returned to the U. S. Senate, and will spend immense sums of money to win. He is backed by the entire McKinley mfiuence which means the republican administration. No schemes to succeed will be omitted. TheBe we believe will triumph over the popular wish in the matter, and Hanna, the adventurer, the promoter of trusts, the corruptionist. we fear will succetd. It lojks that way now.
THE SOLDIER MONUflENT. The Indianapolis News says that on the Soldiers and Sailors monumeut of that city the sum of §509,000 has been paid. They are not through paying yet either. The people living here in 100 years hence will no doubt consider that while we may have

When your stomach begins to trouble you, it needs help. Tne help it needs, is to digest your food, and, until it gets it, you won't have any peace. Stomach trouble is very stressing, very obstinate, very dangerous. Many of the most dangerous diseases begin with simple indigestion. The reason is that indigestion (not digestion, not nourishment) weakens the system and allows disease germs to attack it. The antidote is Shaker Digestive Cordial, strenthening nourishing, curative. It cures indigestion and renews strength and health. It does this by stengthning the stomach, by helping to digest your fool It nourishes you. Shaker Digestive Cordial is made of pure herb3, plants and wine, is perfectly harmless and will certainly cure all genuine stomach trouble. Sold by druggist, price 10 cents to 81.00 per bottle.

nent way of remembering the soldiers of former wars, we also had a devilish extravagant plan for doiug it, when one-third of the sum spent would have answered as well and impressed the generations to come fully as much with our patriotism. Truly the politicians who created and worked the dier's Monument scheme as they^jdid for their own interests would have be master workmen in the gold brick industry had they turned their attention to it.
NOT SO STERLING AS HE niGHT BE. Sterling R. 11 'It! Yes, that's his name. He seems to be more Ilolt than Sterling. This individual, who last year resigned the State chairmanship of the democratic central committee because his ideas regarding the financial question did not co-incide with those of the com.nittee, was a few days ago ascertained to have been engaged in some disreputable matters relating to improvements about Indianapolis. He received 85,000 in the deal. Ho should have his first name changed at once. People will not be able to recognize him by it.
