EMPLOY THEM REGULARLY. It experts who examine county officer's books so thoroughly and systematically and are always able to turn up so much of value to the tax payers, the question is why not employ them regularly? They could examine all the book of all county officersjanddig out probably at times much of value to the people. If llutton, Ihte county treasurer is short iu his accouuts, as the work for ten weeks ot tw«i experts say he is to the amount of nearly $10,000, he is the tifth treasurer of the county known to have been so since the organization of the county. Who knows but what Other county treisurers of the past whoee books were not examined were not in the same condition that Ilutton's Hre said to be to day? Theeeneral public is densely ignorant as to the mode and manner in which the accounts of a unty are kept, and is not disposed to learn. It may be money well spent to have thoroughly posted men go over the accounts of every treasurer hereafter of the county, it is not neceeeaiily a reflection on any official's integri--frv to have this done, but many or business men have occupied^ county offices. The public rarely thinks of an official's business capacity in voting for him. but he is simply a clever fellow, has been a Great partv worker, is poor and needs office, or some other equally •veak reason, but an\ thing else than business tact. Hutton may be short in his accounts due the county, but he is not the only treasurer hereafter that will be in the same line, Therefore as stated, we believe the regular employment of experts hereafter would be money well invested by the county.
THE HEWERS AND DRAWERS. The colored voters generally Qf the country have been loyal in their allegiance to the republican party. They have generally consented to be the hewers of wood and drawers of water, so to speak at all times. It is very rarely any considerable number of them would support democrats tor office. Once in a while some of them with more intelligence and independence than the majority disavows his allegiance to republican methods and republican leaders. They are wanted to vote the ticket, but noth'ng else. The Standard, a colored republican organ at Lexington, Ky., thus speaks out: "The negro is considered a political serf and is expected to ewullow all of the slop given him, whether it is palatable or not, but this edi or will do no such thing. And that in not all. We propose to let the party know that if the negro interests himself in thb ward ciubs, works hard in organizing his brothers fcr a campaign, is prominent in mass meetings and parades, that after the election is over and the nominees of the party are in office he doD't propose to be snubbed. We demand a thare of the emoluments, and if we are not considered we shall make Rome howl. This thing of well qualified negroes being refused a place on the party ticket or being ignored after the election is over will not be to'erated by the Standard."^:

ANOTHER SHORT TREASURER. The treasurer of Elkhart county, it was lately discovered through the work of experts is short $24,000. He says be don't owe a cent, but they all say that. The commissioners of L'arke county, we olwer-re. are intending soon to put experts at work overhauling the books of their treasurer. In fact the expert examination business seems to be coming quite fashionable and seemingly quite necessary. It would be a matter of interest to ooserve how many of these treasurers whose books are being overhauled were members of the co»-:tj officers' ring last winter that so persist ently dogged the heels of the legislators at Indianapolis,
NEPOTISM.
Republican presidents very generally are distinguished for taking care of their relatives through the public crib by giving them official positions, and McKinley is not going to be behind in "•this respect, notwithstanding the general disgust of the public of anything 'that smacks of nepotism. He has al ready appointed a half dozen relatives to positions, and no doubt will find places for many more before his term expiree.
THERE seems little doubt existing AB to the re-election of Tom Taggert to the office of Mayor of Indianapolis. Heap pears to be a satisfactory official in every reepect and has controlled city matters with a judicious band, and tiven the people a good administration That is enough and the necessity for a change is not apparent."
HON, J. FRANK HANLKY, of Lafayette, is a candidate for U- S. Senator. The man crank enough to part hie name in the middle would be a worse crank if he got the office, and therefore he is probably doomed to defeat. Tjafayette has another one of those politicians who parts his name in the middle- B. Wilson Sniiib, If Gen. Wallace had two names in front of the surname it may be he would part them in the mid die also, to be in the Lafayette fashion.

This is partly owing to their simple mode of life, partly to the wonderful properties of Shaker Digestive Cordial. Indigestion is caused by the stomach glands not supplying enough digestive juice, Shaker Digestive Cordial supplies what's wanting. Shaker Digestive Cordial invigorates the stomach and all its glands so that after awhile they don't need help. As evidence of the honesty of Shaker Digestive Cordial, the formula is printed on every bottle. Sold by druggists, price 10 cents to $1 per bottle.
