Assumed the Duties.
Mr. \Y. B. Walkup, the newly elected county school superintendent assumed the duties of his office on W ednesday. His bond as superintendent, with J. H. Conner and John M. Walkup as bondsmen, in the sum of $3,.S00 was tiled in the clerk's office on Tuesday. J. S. Zuck retires after holding the position for eight years. He has made an excellent official, has placed the schools of the county in the front ranks, and his management has been first class. He will practice law and will open an office in Waynetown.

The funeral of Mi6B Mary F. Hovey occurs on Monday. The only oneofthe family, Horace Hovey. a minister residing in Massachusetts, was present.
J. II. Volva, the Fountain county attorney, who died in the insane asylum at Indianapolis a few days ago, bequeathed his estate without reserve to his wife.
The biggest strawberries 6een here in years have been brought here from Waynetown this present week. Some of them were nearly as large as hen's eggs.
Six little children were taken in charge by the Terre Baute police They had not tasted food for twenty-four hours. Their mother is an invalid and the father a drunkard.
John W. Utterback, for some years a trustee of Coal Creek township, is believed to be fatally ill from an affliction as Bright's disease. He has been con* !ined|to his bed for several weeks.
Trustee Samuel Gilkey, of Ripley township, will aim to this year build a new 4-room brick school house in Alamo where one has been needed for a long time. The cost will be near $4,000.
Quite a nurnner of companies of Zouaves from different cities of the State are expected to be present at the celebration of the 4th hero next month by the Knights of St. John and compete frr the prizes to be given for superiority in drill. "Kit" Laverty, who recently inherited $50,000 from his father's estate in .Parke county, has caused the arrest of Charles Palmer and William Doyle, saloon keepers of Terre I-Iaute, alleging that they swindled him out of 8323 in a poker game.
The property belonging to the restaurant, formerly running in Music Hall block, and owned by Lem McMullen, was sold at constable's sale on Saturday at the court house corner. The McMullens have all moved to Lafayette from this place.
A set of swindlers are working the country hereabouts by establishing agencies among farmers for the sale of small mills for grinding teed. Only one farmer in the community is to be blessed with the bonanza, and he is to receive a mill free when a number has been disposed of. The usual contract and order, which later turns up at the bank in the form of a note, accompanies the scheme.

Williams'& Co.,investment brokers, a firm which has been in business at Crawfordsville for eighteen yearB, and has loaned to this state $4,000,000 lor the Provident life insurance company. has moved to this city and has rented a suite of rooms in the Lemcke building. Mr. Williams will move here in a bhort time. His manager, Air. Brewer, is moving his family here this week.—State Sentinel.
Lnst Friday evening the Adams Express Company at New Albany sent out a special train of eleven cars, loaded with 5,004 cases of strawberries, in all 30,533 gallons of Floyd county berries. The total shipments from that city on Friday evening were 7,300 cases. Closing with the 4th inst., 40,732

The Frankfort News says there is the best proof to show that the last gas well bored by Frankfort was "monKyed" with and spoiled. There may not have liean gas in paying quantities, but the test was no more to be relied upon than had the hole been bored into a stump. Ask W. W. Montgomery about acting as judge for another baby show. lie will say "I am not in it any more, 1 am done acting in that capacity. 1 thought it was an ea6y position to till, but found out different." There were 34 mothers wanting premiums and only three to award. You can guess the result.
The day being pleasant and well advertised, the people from adjoining towns and country Hocked to Linden on last Saturday to see the horse show, which was a success in every particular. The show as far as showing good horses was a grand success and the fanciers of good horses can be proud of Linden's first horse show. The following towns were represented: Romney, Clark's Hill, Colfax, Stockwell, West Point. Lafayette, New Richmond, Pleasant Ilill, Newtown, Malott, Hillsboro, Waynetown, Wesley, Alamo, Elmdale, Crawfordsville, Darlington, Bowers, Frankfort, Kirkpatrick and B-ville. The premiums were awarded and the first and second prizes went to wlom they belonged.
