THEY NEED WATCHING.

Township trusteoa are no better nor worse probably than any other class of officials, yet their work and conduct in office needs the attention of tax-payers HI all times. We have seen in paBt years the extravagant and wasteful ub6 they have often made with the tax-pay-ers money, the purchase of useless articles for schools, or other purchases, the increased cost of their services, and the great lack of business management often evidenced by them. The last legislature passed a law giving the commissioners supervision and approval or disapproval of much of the business transacted by trustees. This law can injure no honest intentioned trustee, aid it wa9 enacted in the interest of the tax payers, yet because some 2 by 3 judge has pronounced it unconstitutional, many trustees are paying no attention to it. This intention as expressed by some trustees to violate tbe law by their absence from the Bpecial session of commissioners'court, to look over the trustees' accounts, will at once create a suspicion of a nature unfavorable to them. There have been trustees in this county whose extravagant and nonsensical use of the money of the people should land them in the penitentiary. They are unable in these stringent times to tolerate extravagance from any official, high or low. Therefore, if some of these trustees should hear unlooked for and unpleasant sounds about their ears, they have not far to look for the cause.

MOB LAW IN OHIO.

They have lately had a taste of mob la in Ohio. Last week at Urbana in that State, a negro guilty of the brutal crime of rape upon a white woman, a widow, was taken from the jail in daylight and hung to a tree in the court house yard, and permitted to remain thare for two or three hours. While mob law is never justifiable, the crime seems to have justified the fate meted out to this brute, in fact, we believe, the crime ot' rape should be punished with death aB it is in some states. It used to be the custom to say that the South was the only portion of the country where such exhibitions of a mob. and such disregard of law could be witnessed. Let it be noted that here is a northern State, Ohio, where a mob prevailed, and also the same thiQg has rccurred in Indiana and other northern states. The south is not the only FOCtion where an excitable multitude have taken the law into their o.vu hand, as this latest demonstration at Urbana will attest.

NOT ENOUGH PUNISHED.

Johnson, the Lo^ansport bank wrecks'". who3e criminal conduct will cause much suffering, misery and inconvenience, is not entitled to any of the sickly Bympathv that some of the citizens of his town seem to have for him. He did more harm to the community than anv half dozen embezzlers, forger?, or counterfeiters have done in tbe State for years piet, and deserved the strongest punishment that could reasonably have been suggested. Instead or ten years in the penitentiary, which unfortunately means but six years and four months if he behaves himself, his sentence should have been for life. In any other country but this he would have received such a sentence too.

One-third of all the children die before they are five years old. Most of them die of some wasting disease. They grow very slowly keep thin in flesh are fretful food does not do them much good. You can't say they have any disease, yet they never prosper. A slight cold, or some stomach and bowel trouble takes them away easily.

SCOTT'S EMULSION of Cod-liver Oil with Hypophosphites is just the remedy for

gard

rowing children. It makes flesh sound flesh not soft, flabby fat. It makes strong bones, healthy nerves. It changes poor children to children rich in prosperity.

Book about it free for the asking. tST No substitute for Scott's Emulsion will do for the children what we know Scott's Emulsion will do. Get the genuine.

DISAPPOINTED.

The reorganization ot the bank at Logenaport, the one wrecked by John son, has been a severe blow to several hungry men ot that vicinity, who anticipated getting from $500 to 81,000 per month from the position us a receiver.

No receiver will be needed nor appointed now. By the way, is it not an outrage on lossers of property that corrupt judges can be found who will allow such mammoth salaries to receivers seeking to restore it. It is nothing but robbery, and judges who continue it simply countenance a great wrong. To be a receiver now of most wrecked railroads, banks, or commercial houses, that have been grounded, means much money to tbe individual appointed to superintend or re establish it. The receiver business needs some new laws, especially relating to the matter ot fees paid to the receiver.

LANDIS, the Congressman from this district, thus far seems a mere figure head, who occupied the place uctil the people could take time to get something better. Outside of securing a few positions for a number of starving republinaas, the public has failed to see any evidence of hisgreat statesmanship. In fact, he gives every indication ot being small potatoes, greatly over rated and a miserable excuse for a Congressman.

HAVE you seen anything of prosperity yet? Many millions of the American people have been anxiously looking for that important matter which they were assured would be here just as soon as McKinley was elected. The only per sons that have seen prosperity are sev eral thousand individuals who have got lucrative offices under the McKinley administration.

WHY is it that business lags and men fear to go into debt? Because under the gold standard the value of a dollar keeps rising and property going down. Business can't be done on a falling market. Men will not risk going into debt for fear that they cannot pay when the day of settlement comes. This stops enterprise and stops the demand for labor.
