A SUGAR TRUST HAQNATE. The trial of Ilavemyer, ODO of the eugar trust millionaire magnates for refusing to anBYver certain questions relating to the trust, began in Washington City before the Senate investigating committee last week. The proceedngs will be wulct ed with some interest. Justice rarely rules in any court when* a millionaire is on trial. There is almost always the usual truckling and todyiug to a man who happens to be rich. He may be ever so low ill character or reputation, or honor, or be guilty of dishonorable and illegal acts, yet his money, like charity covers a multitude of sine. Ilavemyer and his erowd possess millions of wealth, and they have used it formerly to buy Congressmen to get them to pass laws satisfactory to the trust, but greatly against the interest of the people. This man is probably no better than many a fellow who has passed years in prison, yet his punishment if any is given him no doubt will be light and amount to little. If he were punished according to hiB deserts he should without question be made to suffer like the common horde of malefactors who have no money.
NO INCREASE.
The annual catalogue of Wabash college for 1897 shows an attendance of only about 200 students, a falling off from former years. In fact old catalogues of forty years ago indicate as large an attendance of students then as there is at this time which shows DO increase at all. Most of the neighboring colleges shofr an increase of from 20 to 30 per cent, in the numbers of students in college now compared to ten and twelve years ago. CrawfordsTille people would like to see prosperity and yearly an increased attendance at Wabash college, but the seemingly old fogy ideas of the trustees prevent this. There seems more piety than good bus mess management in the institution, and big donations to the college will not help matters one bit if there are cot some modern ideas permitted to prevail, and some energy injected into it.
CUTTING DOWN EXPENSES. On t&e presumption that no political demagoguery attaches to the efforts of Gov. Mount to cut down and loop off many expenses attached to the running of the State benevolent and Denal institutions, his work is to be commended. It requires entirely too much expense in running many of tl em, and by a determined effort they can ne reduced. Discharge many of the employees and compel those retained to devote more hours to their work. Thousands of dollars can be saved to the tax payers by such movements. It is to be hoped the Governor will succeed in his efforts to economise. It may not suit the wishes of many old political dead beats, but will be commended by the people who foot the bills.
DOUBLE THE TAX.
The expense of running the township under the present trustee is just about twice what it was under the last trustee, Hartman. The levy for township purposes under Hartman was 18 cents, but under Symmes it is 35 cents. How do you like it tax payers in these stringent times to be compelled to pay as much again tax as you did four years ago?
The essence of life is force. Every breathyou breathe, every Heart beat, every motion of your hand takes force. The measure of force we call vitality. If this is lacking, there is loss of flesh, lack of resistive power, a tendency to catch disease easily, especially a tendency to Consumption. For low vitality nothing is better than Scott's Emulsion. It supplies force by fur nishingf the nourishing strengthening elements of food in an easily digested form enriches the blood, and builds up the system. When ordinary food is of no avail, Scott's Emulsion will supply the body with all the vital elements of life*
Two sizes, 50 cts. and $1.00. All druggists. T'-fe If you will ask for it we will send ydu a book telling you all about Scott's Emulsion* Free.

DEPENDS ON M'KEEN. The Crawfordsville Journal continues to whoop it up" for Wallace for U. S. Senator before the session of the legislature ot the State in '99. Long campaigns are wearysome, and the Journal should restrain its enthusiasm for a year at least, or it may become weary in well doing. It is well also to remember that Riley McKeen, of Terre Haute may have much to say hereafter regarding the nomination of a Senator should a republican be chosen. Should McKeen be in the Held again thore is no question but that he will sweep it. He has money, plenty of it, and that is what takes with the ordinary republican statesman more than anything else.
THE CUBAN WAR.
There are few reports of any fighting between iosurgents and Spaniards in Cuba for several weeks past. The truth seems to be that the insurgents temporarily probably are defeated and the rebellion squelched. It. is, however, certainly a losing gam- to Spain for the insurrection is bound to break out agaiu, and will continue at different periods until there is a change in the ownership of the island, or Cuba becomes a separate independent province. The Spaniards are very poor, indifferent fighters judged by their work in Cuba, and will be unable to retain Cuba many years more.
THE SILVER QUESTION AGAIN. The silver sentimant now is gaining rapidly in this country, and were an election held to-day on the issue the changes from last November would be wonderful to observe. The people begin to believe that th9 gold standard position is strictly for the wealthy, the bond dealers and such like, and not for the best interests of the country. Next year there will be many congressmen, governors, etc., to elect in various States of the Union, and the silver question will be up again, and the majority of candidates on that platform will win.
THK vote on the Dingley tariff bill which proposes to bring prosperity by taxing the people, will probably occur in Congress about July 1st. The plan of adding burdens of taxation to the people to bring around prosperity is strictly original in conception with the republican party.

RED HOUSK, VA.—TO Mrs. Pinkham* My heart goes out in sympntl io al\ who are suffering with troubles peculiar to the female sex. I would like to ex press my gratitude for what vonr Vegetable Compound has done for me. 1 have been a sufferer since girlhood, did not then know the cause of dreadful siek headaches and other troubles. I could not take lon^ walks, lift or carry anything heavy, and was very nervous. Last summer 1 was almost an invalid, could not walk across my room without pain. sent for our physician, lie pronounced my case a bad one of Prolapsus Uteri,' congestion and ulceration cu the womb, and said 1 was to lie l-bed. I was so distressed to find niv»elf so helpless and useless to my family, I saw your Compound advertised mid thought I would try it. I took fourteen bottles and used the Sanative Wash and Pills as directed, and now I am as strong as 1 ever was, and do all my own housework. I can walk more thavi a mile without any inconvenience. Ohl J. am truly grateful. I cannot write tne good you have done me. Words are inadequate to express It. May God bless yon for the good jrou are doing, Mrs. Sidney Hamlet, fled House, Va."
This case is a good illustration of perseverance- and faith. Mrs. Hamlet's sickness was severe, it took courage and patience to master the disease, but in good time the Compound produced the happy result as it will always do. The more difficult the case, however, the longer it will take to cure it— xnany women lose courage before th# medicine has time tc thoroughly taka hold of the avstem
