A WRECKED BANK.
A bank at Logansport went down last week and several hundred depositors. corporations, etc., discover they are much poorer than they formerly were. There have been fully fifty banks gone down in the United States dur'm-j the past six months, and in a'most every instance it has resulted froui the crooked work of officials running- them. There arc probably many more rotten institutions of the kind yet to be discovered. The punishment for crooked work of this kind does not seem rigid enough, and a law holding all stockholders guilty when a bank is wrecked, as well as the officials, would probably greatly lessen the number of wrecked banks, and losses winch t• i• usands of persons in moderate circumstances are compelled to endure. Stockholders of banks are too much given to leaving tbe runnirg of them to other hands than their own. They make rarely an examination of the business, books and matters over which they have a great interest, but rely on the statements of others. The Logansport concern seems to have been run just about that way. Thu stockho ders allowed the president to do about as he pleased with their money. He was the whole bank—cashier, bookkeeper and all. T'iey deeply regret now that they were not more vigilant. It is too late now. The damage is ail done. The moony is all gone.

Throat Coughs
Is there a tickling in the throat? Do you cough a great deal, especially when lying down? Are you hoarse at times? Does nearly every cold you take settle in your throat? These "throat coughs" are very deceptive. Don't neglect them. Troches, or cough syrups won't touch the spot. You must take remedies that will enrich the blood, tone up the nerves and heal the inflamed membranes.
SCOTT'S EMULSION of Cod-liver Oil with Hypophosphites contains such remedies. It has wonderful nourishing and healing power. The cause of the cough is removed the whole system is given new life and vigor and the danger from threatening lung trouble is swept away.

THE GENERAL CORRUPTION. The trading, dickering and traficine exhibited here by our city council in official positions is only onn instance of many of the general corruption in politics all over the country, and th« general dishonesty of men in poeitienr, large and anmll. which the tax pavers have givdii lh«m with which to carry on nesL meb6ures for the people. Here are uien holding petty positiots traticing in other like petty po.-itionp, bartering the interests of the people for their own individual benefit, disposing of oBcial positions as if they were their own property and the people were not interested in them, raising the salaries of those accupying places in spite of the depressed condition of tha country at large, and which only adds creased burdens of taxation. Now this Crawfordsville council is probably no more venal than scores of other city councils, than thousands ot State legislators, than hundreds of representatives and senators in congress. It only indicate?, as stated, the epidemic of corruption that prevailes our entire political system. It would seem that the majority of all politicians the country over are lost to honesty and integrity. An incorruptible politician is a jewel. He shines in no borrowed light. When is this corruption, this bribery, this trickery in official life to end? It cannot thus continue from year to year. A day of reckoning must roll around. A French revolution may be inaugurated in this country soocer than we anticipate. People are gradually coming to the conclusion that stern measures must be adoped soon to reduce the constant corruption and malfeasance among officials'. Increased taxes and dictatorial trusts have set the people to thinking and soon they will be acting.

terest in the matter. They have always liked the greenback, It was the money that tided the country over the shoals of the civil war, and it is to-day the beat and moBt servicable money the government has.
The purpose of the McKinley administration to retire the greenback has set the people thinking. They are asking all sorts of questions.
They want to know. If the government can create money for the bankers, why not for itself and the paople?
If the greenbacks are money ho* can the power of the governmeLt to create money be denied?
If the greenbacks are not money why did the bondholders ever lend the gov eminent any money having lent nothing but greenbacks.
If the greenbacks are not mocoy why have the soldiers ever been paid having received nothing but greenbHC s?
If greenbacks ar« not money why have the milions of debts that have been settled with greenbacks ever been paid?
If bank notes are good money are not the government notes much better?
MCKINLEY thus far seetas able to hold a steady hand against the wild fanatics of his party who are seeking to involve this country into a war with Spain and the annexation ot Cuba to this country. This country with its great debt and the hard times upon it is not in condition for war with any nation, and especially Spain over Cuba. The men demanding war will never go themselves—unless'forced to draft.
THK petition of Helen M. Cougar asking the court to compel the officers of the precinct at Lafayette in which she lives to receive her vote, was overruled by the Supreme Court. Helen will now have to work her iron jaw for some other purpose hereafter, as it is evident the Court thinks she should not be allowed to vote, and it has the last say even if she continues to gabble.
THE DINQLEY BILL.
Congress is still peggng away at the Dinglev tariff measure, which it is aiming to pass as a law, after the scores of diverse interests which it effects have had their say pro and con. It is said that a tinal vote may be taken upon it about June 25th. In the meantime "prosperity" is taking a vacation.
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that Contain MercuryMercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system when eutering it through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used except on prescriptions from reputable physicians, as the damage they will do is ten fold to the good you can possibly derive from them. When Lydia E. Pinkhfun's remcdiei »cere first introduced, sceptics all over the country frowned upon their curative claims, but as year after year has gone by, and tho little group of women who have been cured by the new discovery has grown into a vast army of hundreds of thousands, doabts and scepticisms have been swept away as by mi? hty flood, until to-day the great good Mrs. Pinkham's remedies are doing a nong our female population, is attracting the attention of many of our leadiag scientists and thinking people.
The following letter is only one of many thousands which are on file in the I'inkham office, and go to prove beyond question that Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound must be an article of great merit otherwise it could not produce the results which are a positive fact, and not a mere claim "Dear Mrs. Pinkham:—I write to thank you for the good your Vegetable Compound and Sanative Wash have done me. Before taking your remedies I was so bad with backache, liver and kidney trouble, that I thought I would never find relief. At the time of menstruation, I suffered so that I could hardly stand, but I had to go to work and stand in misery all day. My blood was in an awful state. I suffered with headache and local discharges. I was sick all over. I doctored for a long time, tried three different doctors, but they did me no good. I did not get any help until I tried your remedies.
