NEW STEALS.
By the operation of the laws of the last legislature several ifw steals, to the interest no doubt of some miserable piupera who tind it difficult to make both ends meet unless filching raoney from the public treasury, will heroarter I in fore. One is the truant law. An individual in appointed in each school district to lo ik up EChilHr3 li. may remain tuvay from school without valid reason, aiid rt the ennm to the school authorities- Of course ho is paid (or his trouble. He |would not work without it, however little time he might be employed. It is nothing but a steal. There is no necessity for Rit.'Matters run along at schools heretofore without the aid of any truant officer, and could continue. Thera are several hundred of these truant officers to fce| appointed through the State, and 2«nany ^hungry individuals have already made 'application to be appointed. The tax payers have to furnish the bread and meat to support those truant officials,JJand much money will be required.
Another big steal is that requiring township trustees to provide a sterilizing machine in every school house to make it healthy and prevent the children being attacked by the deadly microbe, which lurks in the air and water, and kills people by the score, as some highly "scientific'' medical authorities allege. It is a first class steal and some body is going to make money uiT «f it if the law is enforced. A nice, affable, pious and learned looking individual from Indianapolis was here last week and agreed to furnish the apparatus for every school house for $22.50 each. Of course he and the firm ne represents had nothing to do with the enactment of tL»is law it is pure benevolence and regard for the health of school children that brought him over here. Were we a trustee we would take the liberty, we believe, to defy this law, and carry the matter to the highest court before complying, or else manufacture our own sterilizing apparatus. Such attempts H9 these to reach into the pocketB of the people is the highth of piracy, and should be prevented if there is any a a of in so
LAITY REPRESENTATION.
1
A number of the most prominent members of the Methodist church at Indianapolis, Greensburg, Connersville and a dozen or more cities of the State have lately met or are to meet to reBolve and ask that th« laity portion of the organization shall have a greater representation in the management and business connected with it than hereto fore. The ministers of the conference of the church are not even in the proportion of one in ten compared to the lay members, yet tbey have three times or more voice in the management of the church. The lay delegates seem deter mined to correct this to some extent, and considers that as they furnish most of the means and munitions to combat S itan it is their right to have more "oice in church government than heretofore. it may be that the church would be more prosperous hereafter were the laity more thoroughly repie-' seiited.
THE republicans are in doubt about carrying Ohio for the State ticket this year, notwithstanding Hannah, Cox, Bushnell and Foraker live there.
See that it is there!

"HEAFTY" ON THE CHARGE. Sugar Creek township has an official in the person of its trustee who from reports holds down his office strictly for the money that is in it, and not in particular for the accommodation of his neighbors and friends. His name is Capt. Ciistur and in the matter of grand charges he appears to rival his names ike, the Indian tighter of the west, in many of his contests|with red men. He received, we learn according tj his itemized statement, the sum of about $425 for his services for one year, which is nearly or quite twice the sum asked by former trustees of the towLship for similar services, and who were fully as competent as he. One of the heaviest tax pa ere of the tofwnabip in conversation tfith us a few days |since said there was considerable indignation felt among many of the taxpayers at the increased expense got the trustee's office in a township with tho population of S igar Crock, while at the same time tho com nieHiouerB are t-trnimly censured for not scanning bis bills more closely and cutting olf a nurul er of items or charges Custar has made for st-rvices. For driving a band of movers or gypsies from off a school lot, which probably required fully 30 minutes of bis precious tiuie, he is reported to have demanded the pay lor one day's service as trustee in protecting school property. Another occasion is cited where they run out of chalk at oae o' he school houses. A boy was sent to some point to procure it by the trustee, and for this the per diem was demanded and al owed. But after all the trustee is a good republican, the township is republican, the commissioners are all republicans,J and what are you going to do about it?
nr. Adauis, American and United States express companies, which had at one time determined on ^resisting the payment of $86,000 due the State, have gained their second wind, so to speak, aud have concluded to |pay tin sum without further litigation. Nothing so refreshing as to convince these wealthy corporations that they do not^own the earth, and that some body is more pow erful than they.
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that Contain MercuryMercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system when entering it through the mucous surfaces.
