REPUBLICANS "UNGRATEFUL." One Ben. F. Havens, an alleged re publican politician of Terre Haute, has every reason to think now that republi cans are ungrateful. He eeeme to be a weather cock politician, has belonged both parties, when there was a hope (or him securing some of the spoils, but quickly flew to the other side from which he hae professed to belong when failing to get office. Four years ago Cleaveland failed to recognize his great ability when he moved on to Washington City in hunt of some place and he went home empty handed. In the in terim between Cleaveland's election and McKinly's he managed to worm into some petty position connected with the World's Fair at Chicago. When McKinley was nominated and with good prospects of an election Haven's "principles" would not permit him to remain with the democracy and he turned over to be a republican. He again advanced on Washington City in force at the inauguration of McKinley, and since then has been hanging around seeking an office. The republican authorities there, however, seomed to have been on to his lay," and he failed again, end he has returned home disheartened, confident that republicans are ungrateful. Havens should join the populists next in time for the campaign of 190t).
TIRESOME EULOGIES.
The American press very generally has the weakness of "sloping over" geuerally too much whenever one of its distinguished senators or soldiers has died and passed away. Their eulogies over the dead are entirely too fulsome, tjo free, and carry with them an evinice lot .doubt and insincerity on the purl of the writers. The late Senator Voorhees is an instarce of this. A few months ago this same press pronounced him a first-class demagogue, a whiskey soak, a poor lawyer, a fool on the financial question, and many other equally disreputable terms. Since his death he is discovered to have been an able advocate, a generous hearted man, a wise and beneficial congressman, and many other endearing terms. These writers do not act fair. They should have said some of these things good sf him before be died. Really for the novelty of the thing they should give the public some beforb-death-eulogieB on Turpie, Harrison, uePeuw, and others, and give these men a chance to read some flatter* iag notices of themselves before they die. It would be a comfort to them in ieir old days.
A BAD LOCATION.
The determination of the school board and city council to luild the new school building on the Wilson echool lot, on east Wabash avenue, will be considered a poor iixive and an unfortunate one in future years. Three-fifths of the scholars who will hereafter attend the school would be much greater accommodated were the building located east of the Monon railway* on east Main, Pike or Wabash streets. There are other pieces or property besides the Busenbark's that could be purchased if this cannot readily be obtained. The authorities having the matter in charge should du the correct thing now while they have the opportunity, as it may be many years before another school house is built if one should be erected on the present grounds owned by the city.

Out-door life and Scott's Emulsion of Cod-liver Oil with Hypophosphites have cured thousands of cases of consumption in the early stages. They cure old, advanced cases too but not so many, nor so promptly. When a case is so far advanced that a cure cannot be made, even then SCOTT'S EMULSION checks the rapid ity of the disease, relieves the pains in the chest, reduces the night sweats, and makes the cough easier. In these cases it comforts and prolongs life* Don't experiment with cures that destroy the digestion. Pin your faith to the one remedy which has been
THE
A BAD LAW.
That law of the legislature doing away with penal labor coming in competition with outside trades and occupations we believe will prove a bad ono as well as dangerous to the managers of S a'6 institutions as well as the State at large. One thousand men, convicts, with nothing to do fromj day to day will prove very dangerous and difficult to control.
The loafer at liberty, cares nothing for wo-k, but the man restrained, and with nothing to occupy his mind or employ his time, becomes restless, dangerous and disagreeable. The new prison law does away with shoe making, wagon making, work in woolen and cotton goods and all oc upations coming in competition with trades outside. &ome lazy labor talking crank thought it absolutely necessary that such a law should be passed and members of the legislature were so influenced as to vote for it, most of ihem not reflecting upon what they were doing. Our opinion is that the old system will have to be re adopted, or the State compelled to in vent some plan to keep the convicts employed from eight to nine hours a day regularly, or the management of the prisoners will be a matter hereafter of great difficulty^^^^^^^^
WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING. President McKinley has ^appointed three persons to repiesent on the part of the government at a proposed^inter national convention in the interest of silver among a number got European nations. Neither England, Germany, nor Russia, would seem to have much interest nor desire in the matter, and it is quite probable that so far as they are concerned the proposed conference will amount to nothing. Republican orators and newspapers! have made in the past much ado about an international bimetalic system, andjwere only favorable to silver coinage when other cations would agree to it.)| When Jthey tind that other nations will have nothicg to do with it, they will at once have to invent some other fiction in the inter est of gold bugs and note shavers. The failure of thiis republican scheme bound to unify the Bentimentjfavorable to free silver coinage in this country and the friends of bimetalism have only to show a reasonable amount of pa tience to see their cause become tri umphant
NOT A CANDIDATE.
An item the other day floating through the papers stated that exSenator Brice, of Ohio, had said that he would not again under any circumstances be a condidate for U. S. Senator. This would seem to be a very sensible conclusion. The party in that Stat£ and the country at large would have fared far better without question hact' he never have occupied that position. He is a representative of trusts,
a
man for the
clasEes,
not the masses,
and a democrat in name only. The public will remember in the construction of the Wilson tariff bill, how tbiB man, with two or three other alleged democratic senator?, prevented the prop er and just treatment that should have been awarded the sugar truBt through the original provisions of the bill. The party loses nothing by the absence of such men from its councils, and will thrive by their retirement. No more men of the Brice breed are needed now or hereafter.

Reflector-^-Lantern
There is an allaroundness" about thesoodness of this
Lantern that is noteworthy. In fact. It has too many virtues to crowd into this space. It gives a surprising volume of light, which is rendered spe* eially intense by the concentrating powers of the Reflector and
Hood. It will not blow out, is absolutely safe, and can be used for driving darkness while you are driving I horses, having a simple arrangement to attach it to any vehicle.
The U. S. Life-Saving Service uses it for a patrol Lantern—as the fierce coastwise gales
,, cannot extinguish it. 1 he U. S. Government buys wisely— take a hint from it, and insist on your dealer giving you the Dietz "goods.
