DEATH OF EX-SENATOR VOORHEES. Ex-Senator Daniel W. Voorhees, died at his residence in Washington City on Saturday morning last. No politician that has resided in Indiana for the past thirty years was better known than Senator Voorhees. He haB served thirty years in Congress, twenty years of which he was a Senator. He began the ,practioe of law at Covington *,about the year 1850, but removed to Terre 'Haute in 1859, aod has ever since called that city his home. He was in the G9th year of his age. Three eons and a daughter survive him, his wife having died some eight years since, His remains were brought to Terre Haute for interment. Of the distinguished democratic quar tette of leaders of fifteen years ago in Indiana, Hendricks,"JMcDmaid, Gray and Voorhees, all have now patsed away in the death of the f-1. named.
THERE appears to be an I xtraordinary number of hungry office Beokers about Ter-e Haute belonging to the repub Mean party just new. They all want to be collector of revenue. There ie the Henry, the Filbeck, and two or three other factions, and each seeking to down trie other. Senator Fairbanks has the naming of the man, and whichever way it goes the disappointed will wail, weep and curse their luck, with an occasional damn for Fairbanks.
PRESIDENT MCKINLEY has already in compelled to Hee fr«m the office seekers of his party and last week took a trip down the Potomac for a "rest. He should learn to hunt ducks like llnrrison and Cleveland to be in fashion a then he can go often.

SPRING ELECTIONS.
Elections for city offices were held in many cities of Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and otber States last- weeK. Of course in some cities the issueB were irely local, in others politics waB the edominating excitement at the polls. Tue verdict, politically considered, was a great reversal over that of lastNoverosr. In most cities the democrats received great gains and elected their ticket. Cox, the republican ring boss, and his ticket were rebuked at Cincinnati by a majority of over 7,000 for the democratic candidate for Mayor. McKinley's town, Canton, went democratic although last November everything there was republican. The democrats elected Harriton Mayor of Chicagg, and in many western cities the result is a surprise to the gold standard fellows. The elections area continued incentive to those favoring the free silver issue to keep up their faith, and to continue their organizations. The man, or men, who say there is a great improvement in business sinco the November election through the majority favoring the g"ld standard doctrine, lies. There is not. Indeed business i6 not as active in a: part of the country as it was sis months ago, and any observing man knows this. The blessings that were to follow the immediate election of McKiolejr have not come. The people are discovering the false promises uttered by republican politicians prior to the election. Poverty, want, dull business, tramps, etc., are all as plentiful now as they were a year ago. The people are not satisfied, and will at every opportunity, as they did at the municipal elections last week record their disapproval against McKinleyism, high tariff and gold standard operations.
ASSOCIA-
AND LOAN ITIONS.
From the investigations by the past legislature into the system bv which inoBt building and loan associations are managed in this State, and the attention directed to them, it is evident that such institutions greatly need regulating, many of them have lostusefulnew so far as a majority of stockholders in them are concerned, and will eventually disbandon. The original intention of building and loan associations when first organized twenty or more years ago was about the same as those){of savings banks, to provide (or theeaving^ of money for the poor or middle class of people by which they could be enabled to build for themselves in a few years homes. It has been greatly diverted
Irom its original purpose during the past decade. Shrewd, interest exacting men have become managers of most of these concerns. They have created and carried a half dozen or more schemes for getting and using the money placed in them by the poor stock-holders. For the ordinary stockholder to receive even the original sum he placed in them, not counting any interest on his money, is now considered a great financial feat and a matter of good luck. "Expense fund," "withdrawels," etc., as originated by the officials,(are demanded and enfoieed by those who manage them. The associations seem to be run now in the interest almost solely of the officers connected with them and the man with 8100, $200 or $500 will hereaf ter, after the exposition of the manage ment of building and loan business in most cases, hesitate a good while before dropping hib money into their capiciouB maws. Regardless of what the lobby may have done in their interest before the legislature it is evident that build ing and loan associations cannot in the future have the rich pickings as in the past, and the man with a small surplus of cash will look elsewhere to place than in them.
DISAPPOINTED SCHEMERS Several little schemes of State repub lican politicians t0 have the State be nevolent institutions placed under party control seem to have been lately knock ed out by Governor Mount. The politicians of the party had planned to have their favorites put into positions connected with these institutions, but Mount seems to have paid no attention to any of them, but has placed men in who know little and care less of politics. Now while this will be perfectly satisfactory to the people it will be deteetible to schemers desiring to pull money out of the State treasury, and if Mount ever aspires again they will have their scalping knives in order for him.
IT is becomingvthe fashion to investigate the books of county officers now in many counties of the State. Why not in Montgomery? Overhauling the records, say for twelve years back, may develop some things of great interest to the tax payers. The investigation should be in the interest of the people, not democrats nor republicans, nor any political party.
IN FORCE.
The acts passed by the last legislature become laws and in force from and after next week, the Governor's proclamation thus announcing it being expected soon. How many of the laws will be declared unconstitutional, null and void remains to be seen, but quite a number of them no doubt.
