Revival of Business.

EDITOR REVIEW: There ie a desire on the part of most people for the return of ^ropperit.y, but the trouble with great rauiy is thHt they waiit somebody else to do the work, ov t.hi "othe: fallow" to furnish the money.

We have organizations with us for the purpoen of booming the town, and tne)' seem to be doing considerable talking and making a great deal of noise without any apparent relief to themselves, or to the tax payers of the town. It is apparent that they wr.? overlooking the real cause oi dull times, in so far at least as Crawfnrdaville is concerned. A revival of business, that will materially bi-nelit thit. town never will come until we have a few tirstclass funerals, even though trade may revive and times g'-t better in other iocaliti.-e, eo as long as we have men in our midst who suy VVe do no want shops and factories, because they wM bring an undesirable clans of citizens umohg us who drink and gamble."

As long as such sentiments prevail among the men who have the money there is but little or no use in our laboring men or merchants talkiug themselves hoarse about better times for Crawfordsville.

Our merchants are complaining of light trade and dull times. They seem to forget that they thenuselves are partly to blame for their light trade. When they close their stores at 6 o'clock in the evening, espec'ally in the summer time, they drive trade to the other towns of this and adjoining counties, because farmers who used to come to this town to trade after their day's work waB done, nov go to otner places to do their trading.

It is a well known fact that this county has wealth and resources in abundance, but because our men who have the money can make more out of it by loaning it at a high rata of interest, and in other ways they will not invest their surplus cash in factories or any other improvements that will bring people and prosperity to our town. And while that is true there is but little use for a business men's association, or for a laboring man's club, unless they can devise some plan to induce capital to lend a helping hand, for they might as well try to run an engine without steam or a mill without power as to revive business without money.

Why not get after the trustees of Wabash College for their narrow selfishness in not making of the school one of co-education. If they were to do so there is no doubt but that it would bring people of means to us and would add business to the town and influence to the college. There was a time when the college was the boast and pride of our people, but now on account of her foggith ways and selfishness her attendance has dwindled down until she iB but little more to the town than an ordinary school with a few dozen pupils. Perhaps if Bhe could get another donation from this county it might revive her somewhat.

High taxes is another evil that our business men must look after and devise some means to remedy before capital will rush in here for invest ment.

There is a class of men who want a tax imposed on those who bring their own products to town to sell, by retailing them.

Such a scheme is advocated by those who make their living by buying from one and selling to another. They are what we denominate "middle men." Those who advocate such a tax argue that "country people ought to nelp pay the taxes of the town." If they were in any way responsible for our high rate of taxation, theie might be some reason in the argument. But as they ara riot such legislation would be financial sui cide for the town, as 1 understand the city couiiCil so decided by voting to allow farmers of this county to eell their own productions at retail without having to procure a license.

If our business men are in earnest in trying to revive the business interests of the town, vtiydothby not devise some means whereby tj reduce the running expenses of the town and thereby reduce taxation? I here is no use in paying city officials t»ice as much as is ilecessmy when thi re are other just as good m"i who would be glad to do the work for half the money that som? of th.ise otlicwrs and police are now re Reiving.

There seems to be but two classes Of men wh• are now making any nioudy, and they are 'iflic- hold- rs and pensionera. We are not finding fault with the defiHi-ving onus of the latter class, for if it was not for what money they get from th•- government there would be but li tl" or no money iu circulation.

There are several ways in which our city exper.ses can be reducod, and one is in discharging at least one half of our police fouv, for a majority of ,tb.em aje more oraa'ii"ntal 'hut useful. ,s

It is said that there is a certaiu resort in this city where there may be seen as many as a dozen women and as many men

most any time aud the police never molest them. Those things ou Sunday the same as through the week, while the police are standing on the streets like so many starks looking for minnows in a mud puddle, while those gambling dens and sinks of iniquity, that are but the ant». rooms to the abodes of the damned and the vestibules to hell run aud fiiuri both night and day, becauseMt is claimed they divide with the police. It is also said that oneof those starks.whenhe is not Btanding on the street, he spends most of his time with the sirens of th^ town in order as it is supposed to protect them from the othsrbad inen of the town.

Excuse us Mr. Editor. We forgot that Crawfordsville is a republican town, and that it is run according to republican methods, and of caurse any suggestions mads by a democrat don't count. TAXPAYER.

The Shakers huve made a great hit. Their Digestive Cordial is said to be the most successful remedy for stomach troubles ever introduced. It immediately relieves all pain and distress after eating, builds up the feeble system and makes the weak strong.

The fact is, foods properly digested are better than so called tonics. The Cordial not only contains food already digested, but is a digester of other foods. Food that is not digested does more harm than good. Teople who use the Cordial insure the digestion of what food they eat and in this way get the benefit of it and grow strong.

The little pamphlets which the Shakers have sent druggists for free distribution, contain mufh interesting information on the subject of dyspepsia.

Laxol is not a mixture of dru^s. It is nothing but Castor Oil made palatable.

Honesty and Virtue.

There is more honesty and virtue contained in a bottle of Salvation Oil, than in any other liniment known. "Mrs. A. Fiedler, 2804 Palethorp St., Philadelphia, Pa., confirms this truth: She found Salvation Oil to he an excellent remedy for rheumatism, stiff joints, bruises, etc., and thinks it should always be kept in the house." Don't listen to the dealer's arguments in favor of a substitute. Insist on getting Salvation Oil, it costs only 25 cts. 7:

CONSUMERS PAY THE BILLS.

The manufacturers who contributed BO liberally to the republican campaign fund last sumniSr ate now likely soou to be satisfactorily recompensed in an increased tariff on imported goods 9f their make, and a higher protective rate ur their own. The presmt Dingley t-.nff bill now before Congress clearly licates that it will become a law, and flat its features will suit protected inti ^ts. Thus the consumers will eventually pay ith interest, all the expenses that brought about republican Buccess last year.

4 GREATER INDIANAPOLIS.

Mass.

Its the style uow for many cities to take in as a part of the corporation all suburbs ami ihe country adjacent for several milts, and Indianapolis lately dropped in the habit. By taning in Haughville, 13rightwood, and other suburbs five or six miles from the court houBe they now have "greater Indianapolis." aud claim a population of over 200,000. We have no objection providing they don't take in the neighboring county Beats. We might son day want to be a greater Crawfordsville.

THE new administration is beginning to show strong indications of nepotism, McKinley has appointed a cousin, Osborne, Consul-General at London, and Sherman a few days since appointed a relative to some position in his department. They are real generous to their kin when it coets them nothing—not even compunctions of conscience.

Humors, pimples, boils, are very an noing. They quickly disappear when the blood is purified by Hood's Sarsa parilla.
