JANUARY 30, 1897.

THE LAST OP FUSION. Icdicatioi are quite ph.in th«t tbe fusion business in politics t:n« hst'l its day. 'I hiise most fttvortible to it at tbe beninninii of the campaign were at it" close ilingutted thoroughly at the results. The democracy very generally io these deals received the hot end of tho poker, eo to apeak. The mountain of PipullBMi WHS on DEVELOPMENT only small mouse, hut vtry irritating one In vt»rj few States of the Union did it exert much influence ir power. Its leadore weru exacting to the lust iuch, and whenever possible exercised a threatening and a domineering spirit. By the democracy yielding to them it wai much injured in ?elf respect and humiliated to the last degree. The truth is Populism only in a few certain localities bad any fixed strength, and never again will it exert tbe power it did in the past. At Cb cago last year at the national convention thousands of democrats were irnuted at the excessive demands of this short lived organization. At this congressional district convention at Frankfort democratic delegates yielded to the fusion demands and threw aside time tried party leadors and selected a populist demand for the nomination. And we know the result too. And in the election the other day iu the Stat6 legislature when it came to tbe selection of a U. S, (senator, G.ll, of Ladoga, a populist and elected last fall by democratic votes, bad not the politeness nor decency to cast his vote for Voorhees, a democrat, but voted for Tumpletoo, a populist. It may be some compensation, however, to know tbat Htiiong the seven or eight long bearded and uncombed members of his party in the legislature he was the. only one to be silly enough to thus act Ai net is now before the legislature to amend the election law so that any ind idates name can appear but on one 'icket. If passed it will tend very greatly do do away with the fusion business. Democrats will always main tain greater strength in the party, and win more friends by avoiding hereafter such uonsensical collusions with any political organization regardless of what name it may be daubed in tbe political tield. If we have principles let us uphold tham at all times regardless of any pop-in jay organization that they may not suit. Our ranks are open to recruits, at all times, but principles must be maintained at all times if we are to succeed. Fusion will be a very unpopular feature hereafter, we believe, judging irom expressions heard.

THE ''COMPLIMENT" BUSINESS In casting the vote for U. S. Seuator in the State legislature the other day the republicans through their majority elected Fairbanks. The demounts with no prospects of electing anybody Cdst their votes for Hon. D. W. Voorhees. This was done as a compliment to him only, and is one of those politic*! traditional humbugs that 16 aim us al ways qiven when the individual has no chance whatever for an election. Tbr\ must vote for somebody to exhibit then principles and belief and it matters little who it is under such situation. Suppose the majority in the present legislature had been democratic. Where then would have been Voorhees? Many of those urging the complimentary vote for him the other day would have been among the first to knife him. There are a half dozen men of the party anxious to till bis shoes, and bad there have been any prospect there would Caye been few complimentary votes for Voorhees. It simply show6 how lavish some men are with votes which will do them no barm and the recipient no good. Senator Voorhee's work is about finished. For near 5C years he has been a prominent figure in the political world. While a man of many mistakes his heart ha-? been right. He has stood faithfully by his party in sunshine and storm, and these complimentary votes at the end of his political career will not effect him or bis standing with the party tbat he has served so long and well.

THE legislature gives forth no promise yet of making any appropriation for (the proposed "Indiana Centennial Cele bration'* in 1900, and representing the views of nine tenths of the tax-payers will not. Those anxious individuals, mostly residents of the State capital, it would Beem, will be compelled to wait until a more fitting season to inaugurate their raids on tbe State treasury, as indications certainly point tbat the people are not of a disposition to allow them now.

The gas companies elsewhere than at Crawfordsville came in for the bitter maledictions of patrons during tbe recent cold snap judged by reports from Indianapolis, Logausport, Portland and other cities.

TAXATION POR THE POOR. Since the council bu detevuined to add to the burdens of the taxpayers by taxing them forajeewer system under the guise of giving employment to poor men this winter the question arises why cannot this time thing be done for other improvements and for other winter seasons tbat inny hereafter follow. It is setting a dangerous precedent and wi.l hereafter be attempted when other councilmen are running the city. The question is has any corporation tbe right to tax oitiaenn for the purpose of furnishing employment to men? Cer tainly not, we believe. No corporation is compelled to furnish men employment, or if so for the same reason it can be forced to give them bread, clothing and other necessaries. Away back behind the assertion thut sewers are neces sary and that poor men should be furnished work, many believe there is another scheme for a few men's eepecial benefit. We all remember tbe rumors and suspicions regarding the establishment of the electric light plant, Rod also the purchase of the "Trilby" road grader. Whether there were "divys" in the purchase of these we know net, yet some men were retired from the city's management from thejjbelief that there bad been. Time may develope some strange thingB regaring the sewerage business.

DRUGGISTS'LICENSE AD act asking that it be made a law' compelling druggistn to procure license wherever they retail liquor, is to be introduced before the legislature at its present session, Druggists are no more dishonest in persuing their calling than any other slass of men, yet it has been known tor years in many localities th at a large part of their protits have been obtained quietly behind prescription cases or in back rooms dealing out whisky ic small quantities, the same as the saloon keepers, and often without authority from any source to do so. The physician's prescription business has become a stale humbug and fraud in many cases. There is entirely too much whiskey drinking on physicians' prescriptions. The privilege has been greatly abused. Reputable druggists do not tolerate it, Dut all druggists are not reputable. Some system should be established, some law enact ed to abreviate at least this abuse. There are many drunkards graduated from prescription stands, and are of the kind would not under any circumstances be seen entering a saloon. Reputable druggists should favor some plan to stop this dram drinking so far as it effects their business—those in the tra not in this class desire, of course, to have matters continue as thev ow are.

DONE NOTHING YET

The State legislature has been is session now over twenty days and has done little or nothiDg. No acts have been handed to the governor for his approval or veto, and much valuable time ha3 been already frittered away The law making machinery of the State is a vast expensive traditional humbug. The good attorneys could in 30 days agree, pass upon and baud to tbe governor more and better acts for him to pass upon than the 150 odelp, ends and pickups tiiht are sent by the ptople every two years to the State capital to work for aud enact laws for them. Vet it wouldn't look like popular government to a low ten men to make tbe law* and cousequence. expensive and useless as much of it is, it must continue to be followed.

THE QUAIL HUNTERS LOBBYA correspondent from Jamestown of the Journal, referring to the proposed jobby of the quail hunters from this place before the legislature say6: "NiDeout of ten of these hunters pay no tax. They keep a few dogs, a gun and kill all the game that belongs to a iv a a at all the dogs, burst the shot gun6, make the sports eari their living like the rest of us do.

The correspondent speaks some truth iu this. We have frequently observed that maty alleged ''sportsman" are men of small means and are not an'ong the first to pay tax at the treasurer's office.

MANY EMPLOYEES.

The two houses of tbe legislature have under pay assistants to the number of 70 or more. It requires now nine or ten door keepers for each house. All thiB is a fair sample of republican economy. It must be remembered that bolh branches of the legislature have a majority republican and are to a great extent rosponsible for any extravagance shown. It is entirely probable tbat oneh#lf this number of employees is ample for the work to be done, but if so arranged Inany political pets would have to go unrewarded.

NO "FAIRNESS'' THEREThe suggestion that a fair apportionment of the State fur Congressional and Legislative purposes will be made by the present republican legislature is a parody on words, a joke upon such an idea. Men of the Haggard and Hubbell style of thinking and acting know aothing of fairness in politics and don't want to learn. There are too many place hunters io the present general assembly to expect them to act in any manner fair to political opponents.

T1LLI& AGAIN 8KLECTED. Hon. Henry M.Teller was chosen Almost unanimously or the Colorado legislature last week as Senator to succeed himself for six years anting from from March 4th next. Mr. Teller will ba remembered as the leading speaker here at the greot democratic rally on the 24th of October last at the Fair Ground.

IT is observed that about all the names spokeu of as probable select ions for McKinley's cabinet are those of millionaires, or at least wealthy men. From this it would seem that McKiDley thinks that all the braina of tbe country belong exclusively to the well-to-do and they alone are needed to consult upon national questions coming up before cabinet meetings.

JUDGING from the delicacy with which tbe members of the legislature approach tbe "Vandalia" claim, it looks muck like they have lain themselves open to the suspicion of having been "seen" by some persons interested in the company. Tbe members must do something soon in the matter if they would allay any such suspicion.

Deafness Cannot be CnredBy local applications as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of tbe Eustachian Tube. WTben this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound ir imperfect hearing, aad when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal comdition, hearing will be de stroyed forever nine cases out of tan are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but an infiamed condition of the mucous surfaces.

We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafnees (caused by catarrh) tbat cannot be.cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free. F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, O. Sold by Druggists, 75c. Hall's Family Pills are the best.

Announce t.he presence of rheumatism which causes untold suffering. Rheumatism is due to lactic acid ig the blood. It cannot be cured b.v liniments or other outward applications. This is the testimony of thousands of I people who once suffered the pains of rheumatism but who have actually been cured by taking Hood's Sarsaparilla. Its great power to act upon the blood and remove every impurity is the secret of the wonderful cures by Ilood^s Sarsap arilla.
