Qire§ Some Political Reminiscence! of Himself to a Crowd of Listeners-
Talking to a crowd of politicians at Indianapolis the other day in speaking of a portion of his own political career Gen. Wallace said: "Mv appointment as Minister to Turkey," said Gen. Wallace "came about in this way: I was surprised to receive one day a telegram from President Garfield. asking)tne tocometo Washington atonce 1 did FO. Arriving at the White Ho.se I called upon General Garfield. (We became well acquainted at the battle cf SHIoh.)

Sot so Lucky under all Circumstances—The county Bastile at Present-
Through the courtesy ot Turnkey Howard Dickerson, a REVIEW reporter was shown through the county jail on Monday and was treated to something of a surprise upon discovering the present population of the iron wards. It is repeating an old story to say that tbe interior conditions of the jail are next to perfect as to cleanliness and other regularities required at such institutions but it is not repeating an old story when we note the present excess in supply over the demand. But seven wild and wolly prisoners make life merry there, among them one womaa, five drunks, and Simpson, tbe livery thief. These residents ot our city, retained by common invitation were not interviewed from the fact that they were all occupied at cards, save Simpson who was busily engaged in perusing a newspaper handed him. The women's department on tbe second floor was indeed desolate with but.one prisoner whose misfortune it waB to Keep company with solitude ana silence. The number of prisoners is exceedingly low, especially when one considers ths number of unemployed, tbe scarcity of business and money and that which follows the temptation to commit crime. Sheriff Davis has kept up tbe good conditions of the jail for nearly four years in a most commendable manner and much credit is tiue hie turnkey »nd assistant, Howard Dickerbon, who has been Mr. Davis' most active helper eince the day he took charge of the office which was three years the 22ad of last August.

Gov. Mount is credited with saying that in tbe officea of township trustee, road eupervieor and county school superintendent there is much stealing and corruption, and he would in his position favor anthing that might be proposed to stop this wrong. Of course it is not meant that all trustees, all road supervisors and all school superintendents are corrupt and dishonest, but that the way the offices are managed it gives fine opportunities for those thus inclined to be dishonest and filch money from the county treasurers, under various heads thst should be prevented by the enactment of more rigid laws governing these positions. Many, men occupying these placee in the past have been known to have acted diehoneetly, to have wronged the tax payers, and disgraced themeelvee. Laws to reduce this corrupt work to a considerable extent could be enacted. If thia preeent legislature will enact euch all the better tor the public.
OBN. WALLACE UNFORTUNATE GEORGEi-
HE!
"General, I want you to go as tbe representative of the Government to Uruguay and Paraguay." "I told President Garfield that I did not care to go to those 8outh American States, and kindly declined." 'Well,' said tbe President, 'I have just been reading "Ben-Hur" and if you won't go to South America I want you to go to Turkey and write another book, Being the material that can be furnished by the annals of the great East.' "I immediately told him I would not only accept the position/ bat I would write the book. He put his arms about my shoulders as we separated, and shortly after that 1 took a steamer for Turkey. When we were off the coast of Ireland the first ne'vs I received from this country was the announcement of President Garfield's*! assassination. I wrote "The Prince of India," and duriug the entire time I was gathering materials tot it 1 bad that last conversation with tbe promise to President Garfield in my orisd.

Has His Ootids Thrown (hit' of His Home by the Constable at Romney, and is Compelled to Hunt Another
Abiding PlaoeMany persons hers know George W. Voris, as ho formerly lived ir the county and has many relatives living hereHis actions regarding himself and toward other persons here became notorious. He ia of an erratic, atubborn disposition, and it would seem cad get along with no body any length of time. George was a gallant soldier during the war acd is entitled to a pension, and should have it, but his obsfinste die position in refusing to submit to a medical examination as all veterans are compelled to, has kept bim from getting it and probably always will, and he in very likely to go down to his grave depriving bis children and family of that much at least, whatever it might be, of moey which would benefit them. A special examiner was here once who came on purpose to make tbe examination, but George, a» heretofore, refused to submit, and is still without any pay from tlie gover-ment. Through his obstinancy has become hard up, is without much means, and has been forced out ot his home for rent by of ficers. Tbe following from the Lafay ette Journal is the latest concerning him:
The Lafayette Journal tells of tbe misfortunes of Geo. Voris and wife, of Romney. The constable placed their household .effects ia the, roadway. The couple gathered a few of their effects in baskets and started on foot to Crawfordaville leaving, their household goods iu the street. A sad holiday experience for tbe old people,

There is too much Sunday liquor selling for tbe good of the community, as aoy ope can nee who will obeerve the amount of travel through the alleys on Sunday.
The grand jury will probably not be called for this present term of court. Wick Smith is a good salesman of daily newspapen.
At this time it looks like Gen. Wal lace was not in it for U. S. Senator, although Wingate, Williams and Bonnell probably do not think that way.
A good att» ndance at most, of the township schools is reported eince the work was resumed on Monday.

An Iaipartant Decision.
Attorney Generai Ketcham has rendered an opinion that it is a violation ot of the insurance law for a company to to insert the following in its policies: "It is a part of the consideration ot this policy and the basis upon which the rate of premium is fixed that in the event ot loss the company shall not be liable for auy amount greater than three-fourths of the actual cash value of the property covered by the policy at the time of such loss and in case of other insurance whether policies are concurrent or not, then for only its prorata proportions of such three-fourths value"
This is tbe clause which h.is so often defrauded policy holders out of their righte.
The Correct Poet tlen
In mentioning a squabble anong the township trustees some twelve years ago over the election of a county su perintendent an error in the statement regarding the position occupied by trustees Ford and Morgan was niadeth our last issue. Cantley was a demo* crat seeking a re-election, while Pry was a republican. Ford, the democratic trustee, would not under sny circumstances support Cantley, but was willing to favor any other democrat seeking the place, while Morgan would not sup port any other man but Cantley. The disagreement over Cantley led to his defeat and the selection of Fry. This, we believe, is the correct position of both men in the contest.

Seat to the Orphans' Heme. Three children named Brown who had been living in somewhat dilapidated quarters'with a grandfather ot theirs on Pike street, were sent to tbe Orphans Home a few days since, where it is believed their present condition will be greatly improved. There are now about 20 orphan children at the "Home" and the nice quarters provided them and healthy surroundings is away ahead of what most of them have ever .known.
The JudgesT.
A good joke on Dr. Lyman Abbott of Brooklyn, comes from Wabash College, in Indiaca. The winner of a recent oratorical contest has been found to have plagiarized one of Dr. Abbott's sermons. But he won on delivery, the able judges having marked bim down on composition and thought. He is to be expelled, but the judges are beyond reach of discipline.—Springfield, (O.) Republican.
Marvelous Besalts-
From a letter written by Rev. J. undermAn, of Dimondale, Mich., we are peruiited to make this extract: "I have BO hesitation in recommending Dr. King's New Discovery, as the results were almost marvelous in the case of my wife. While I was pastor ot' the Baptist Church at Rives Junction she was brought down with Pneumonia succeeding La Grippe. Terrible paroxysms of coughing would last hours with little interruption and it seemed its if she could not survive them. A friend recommended Dr. King's New Discovery it was quick in its work and highly satisfactory in results." Trial bottles free at Nye & Booe's drug store. Regular size 50c. and $1.0«.

Catarrh in the Head-
Is a dangerous disease. It may lead directly to consumption. Catarrh is caused by impure blood and the true way to cure it is by purifying the blood Hood's Sarsaparilia cures catarrh because it removes the cause of it by purifying the blood. Thousands testify that they have been cured by Hood's jSarsap»iilla.
Hood's Pills are purely vegetable and do not rge, pain or gripe. All druggists. 25c.

Why Attempt to tiure-
Catarrh by the use of so-called blood remedies? Th.it eatarrh is not caused by blood troubles is self-evident when you reflect that attacks are always dus to sudden climatic change o^ expoeure, and occur moat frequently during tbe winter and spring, though the blood is as pure then as in summer or fall. A remedy which quicaly relieves and cures the catarrhal attacke bas been found in Ely'e Cream Balm.
