N LEAVES-
\V. D. num. the organizer and leader uf the tuttiti^ or gold democrats, is about to leave Indiana for gooo to take up bin residence in New York. Ho is to he a Bort of manager of tho organization at a salary of $400 por month.
Ill ere will be no tears shed at hie going and much Fatisfaction if he remains aivay. lie has been for years a perpetual office seeker, and probably would tind it difficult to earn a livelihood in active law practice or away from where salary of some kind was not convenient. He was so ungrateful as to smite the baud that fed him. to seek tho defeat of the party that had hereto fore honored him. He failed to be a man of prominence at the Chicago convention, was not consulted in party councils, and sought in consequence to wreck it. The gold democrats were only another name for McKinley republicans, and genuine republicans from principle will and should receive much more respect than these renegades of which Bynum is one. Just as soon as the "gold democrat" wing is merged into the republican party as it soon will be, bynum will be out of a job, but he and his ilk will receive the proper contideration and contempt which such persons should receive.
CUBAN AFFAIRS..
Judging from the tone of the speeches Congress there are few members of it but what desiro a recognition of Cuba as a belligerent power—some of the members even going so far
HB
to favor
war with Spain without much delay. Cuba may ho and is, no doubt, entitled to hor freedom, but
thiB
country does
not desire to get into any foreign complications. She has certainly eDough and more tfcan enough discordont elements to attend to of her own without mixing into other people's affairs. Cuba will always be a trouble to Spain, and eventually be free from any allegiance to that country, but let this country keep out of it unless to act as a mediator between the two countries. This country has had enough of war to satis: fy the people for long yoars to come.
AFTER THE TRUSTS-
The Bentimont against trusts seems to be taking practical form. The iron pipe trust, which is a combination of seven or eight large manufacturers of iron piping, all controlled by one head and all organized to shut out competition, is to be called up before the U. S. court to answer thus and so, and be prepared to make a defense, if able to do so, for violation of the anti-trust law. Investigation shows that piping furnished by this trust is sold at from 20 to 30 per cent, higher prices than if competitive bids could have been received. There are hundreds of trusts in this juntry now warring against the interests of the psople, and if there is any way to break them up and allow free competition in all the necessaries of business it should be done.

Lafayette, i* said
to be a candidate, "recoptive" probably, for the position of U. S. Senator buforu the legislature. Any one parting his namo in the middle as this man does would hardly bo considered a lit subject for U. S. Senator. B. Wilson Smith, from the same city, wants to le a speaker of the House, but tho same parting of name will be fatal to him. Persons placing such architectural style on their names nuod to be watched by their friends they might do some barm.
I!•', as alleged, a portion of tho members of a city council can purchase goods or material of the value of several thousands of dollars, without competitive bids or publication ordering it, the question may be asked where does their power end to maKe additional burdens for tax payers to bear. Has a portion of the city council purchased 80,000 worth of sewer pipe without authority of the city council, or without giving all sewer pipe dealers a chance to bid for it.
A admirer of Cleveland after reading Cleveland's message and his admiuistration in general, terms him the greatest American of his time. If so, the Lord help the inferior, the mediocre and others of prominent Americans. Cleveland will be more distinctively known hereafter as the creator of the worst panic and hard times of any man of the century, and as for real, great Americans the breed has been extinct for some years.

THE "CENTENNIAL" BUSINESSThe Indianapolis crowd of would be State treasury raiders are determined to rush the"Centennial" fraud through if there is any possible way into coaxing, bribing or bull-dozing legislators at the session next month. A big healthy lobby will, of course, be organized to work the members. Legislators if they represent their constituents will crush this useless piece of work promptly. Indiana needs no "Centennial" exposition, there is no advertising necessary to show the resources of the State, and the entire matter is the creation of schemers at the State capital, anxious to get their hands on the money of the tax payerB. Let those so ambitious to exhibit the State's greatness go down into their own pockets to foot the bills, and nc one will object to giving them all the credit and glory that may arise from it. vVith a state debt of 17,000,000 Indiana assuredly has no money to invest in such enterprises. What her people want now abovs anything else is reduced taxation.
HE DECLINES-
Ex-President Harrison announced the other day that he was not a candidate for U. S. Senator, haying that he had no desire to have the position. Since the republicans have the selecting of a candidate it might be said that this is to be regretted. He is in fact the only real first chiss man among the candidates talked about in his party. He would be the man from his ability as a law maker, and known integrity. Lie is in fact head and shoulders above all others mentioned for the position. Fairbanks, an almost unknown quantity, but a seeker for the place for years, is the next strongest and will undoubtedly he chosen. He

about all that can be paid of him. He has had no legislative experience, is not particularly brilliant as a lawyer, but has managed to keep himself prominent before his party and will be selected for U. S. Senator.

THE MESSAGE ON CUBA. The message last week of the President to Congress on matters relating to Cuba is very conservative in tone and very different from the ported rumors of what it was exptcted to be.
I am opposed to the entire scheme of appioached what w.is expected of thom. the National Business Men's League, an Spain has failed utterly to put down disclosed by Mr. Dolan. Its basic the he rebellion and establish matt-re as ory is that organized wealth shall dii tate high office and so take possession of
iu
vain. That court sees uo reason for reversing the opinion of the court and juries below. The cold blooded, cruel and cowardly murder of Pearl Bryan near Newport, Ky., less than a year ago is i-till remembered. The evidence adduced against these two men was strong ami convincing, and the jurors could not weil render a different verdict. Their execution will meet with public approval everywhere, as was the general indignation expressed ag:-inst them when the details of tho murder were given,
RETURJN TO THE OLD LAWOne of tho correct things for the next legislature to do would be to nullify tho law compelling sheriffs to return convicts to the counties from where thjy were convicted hack to their former homos alter sentences had expired. It works an additional hardship upon the former convict, who is compelled to face the scorn of those knowing him, and is an incieased cost in most cases to the counties. It it bet:r that Michigan City and Jefferonville be injured whatever the injury might be, by returning to the old law. than that tho present systom continue.
judging from a letter
he wrote regarding the matter, iB what might be termed a "receptive" candidate for U. S. Senator before the legislature at its session next month. He means he iB ready to receive the offico at any timo it may be handed him on a silver plater. ''Receptivo'' candidates don't succeed in this day of office greed. Harrison, many republicas say, was really a "receptive" candidate for president early in tho year, but seeing the great strength of McKinley modestly declined in a letter before the convention.

No league of business men or other, thing at least which will force the men. based upon wealth or other foun
dation, can erect a this country. In Senate we have millionaires and business men enough to serve all legitimate purposes. Senators are needed who have no specialties, but who will act for the interests of the country in gross without special affinities. The people inoi.t deserving of representation and most in need of legislative protection are the farmers, tho 6iuall stoiekeepers. the artisans, and the lahorers. and I stand by them ana agains.t this, so-called league.
