CURRENCY REFORM-- .,V/Ourasionally we observe articles in tliu great daily newspapers on currency reform, and also opinions that national gathering of our b(»6t business men should be held in tbo interest of a reform in our currency. Wo believe the suggestions very opportune and a change in nur money system iH greatly desired au needed. [f the present plan continues by which the monied men, bond dealers and note shavers, are enabled to fair so well, to continue to pile up wealth as within the past wenty years ut the continual expense of all other classes then the next things to be expected must be revolution anaichy and blood 6bed. The speculators upon the wealth of this country are in numbers a small class compared to the rest of the population, nrul why their interests should predominate over all other claase* is one of those things that call for currency reform. Thero must be a more equal distribution of the wealth of this country. The present plan is, it wonld seem, partial to one class, and greatly to the detriment of all the rest. Discussions on the tinancial question begun within the past few years will not cease »nti! relief is forthcoming. The late eleciion favorable to the gold standard has only temporarily quieted discussion. It has not stopped gitation permanently. The great body of the people are not satisfied with prospects of the future. The result of the election favorable to the bond buyers and speculators of the east will nit eventually prove satisfactory to the west and south. They know that it was accomplished in great part by corrupt means, by the use of money in vast quantities to forestall the popular will. A reform in the currency must be such that it will benefit the man with SI,000 equally as with the man with his 81,000,000. A re. form in the currency should be such that no advantage could be taken over oDe class by the other, that speculation upon the misfortunes of the country can oe greatly lessened end less profitable, than may to some extent or as far as possible lessen the effects of panics in the money markets. All will welcome the holding of meetings in the interest of currency reform, having such objectt in view.
AFTER BUILDING ASSOCIATIONS. The next legislature will probably have before it, a bill regulating the government of building and loan associations. Iloretofore most of th»m seem to have been run strictly in the interest of the oflicers, to see how much money by certain specified rules adopted by the managers, they could squeeze out of the investors, or those loaning them money. 1 hey had a big lobby at the last session of the legislature to look after iheir interest and prevent any adverse legislation. The same thing may be expected at the next session. If the lobby succeeds in defeating measures intended for the honest govoruient of tlib associations then they will become more extortionate than ever. It is questionable if building associations have iiut had their day anyhow, if some cheaper system cannot become justicable for the aid of poor persons desiring to build homes, or ioan small sums of money for the interest to accumulate than the present building and loan plan.
OFFICIAL VOTE ON ELECTORSi'he State canvassing board completed its work at 5 o'clock last Friday. Richard M. Milburn, the marshal for the Third congressional district, did not appear with tro certified returns from the counties in that district, but the board completed the canvass by accepting as oflicial the returns from that district that had been sent to the Secretary of State by county clerks direct, thus altering the "official'' totals arrived at earlier in the day. Tho board declared the oflicial vote of the State on presidential electors to be: Democratic .305,573 Republican 323,754 Prohibition 3,056 Gold Standard Democratic 2,1*5 National (Prohibition) 2,208 Socialistic Labor 329

THE CIVIL SERVICE ACT. Just now among numerous republican office seekers the civil service law and the rules and regulations composing it aro receiving a cood deal of cursing by them. Under that law the opportunities of getting office and drawing pay from the goverament by change of administrations is greatly abridged, in fact under most departments of the government they are reduced one-half or even less. The old saying "To the victors belongs the spoils" is in direct opposition to the civil service law. The law simply says or means that a competent man shall not be removed from office solely ou the ground of political reasons. If he is competent, honest and industrious, he shall remain, be he democrat or republican. Cleveland on his first term began to enforce the civil service rules, and Harrison in a measure followed him. Hungry politicians, too lazy aud indolent to earn a living by their own exertions, curse the civil service law, but the majority of business men the couutry over approve of its features. Changes made are often greatly detrimental to the service, be 6ides the practice of "to the victors," etc., has created an drmy of worthless people who make a life business of occupying official positions, or of looking for them. Fir its enforcement the civil service act seems to rely almost solely upon the president. Ilo'v McKinley will do in the matter is as yet unknown. lie seems to be somewhat of a negative character, and will be, it is to be feared, too much under the control of Ilanna, DePeuw and other politicians. It is to be hoped that he will enforce the law. It is the thing to do.
STILL OUT.
Ex-Congressman Bynuro is still out iu

as receiving an office
for his apostacy and toryism displayed in the late campaign. He .de himself particularly active as a "gold democrat," and advised tho bolting oT the Chicago nominations, and was conspicuous everywhere in lighting the ticket. There appears little doubt fiotu the office seeking instiucts of the man tbut he expected to be rewarded for all this, and would receive something from his master, Cleveland, whom he was serving. The rumor is regular that he is a candidate for something and has been ever since he was defeated for Congress in the Indianapolis district. There was a vacancy only a short time ago in the Court of Claims but he failed to get it as last week another man was appointed. His anxiety must be interesting to observe. He may be suffering the mental torture and self rebuke that comes to all traitors, but deserves all he receives. The sneaks who assisted in defeating Bryan and in electing a tool of the monied power of the country, and further perpetuating trusts aud high tariff will be
Bpotted
on every occasion,
and before such men shall ever again have place or position in the democratic party it should go into final dissolution. A party sneak and traitor should not be recognized.
UNGRATEFUL FELLOWSAccording to Cheadle's paper, the American Standard, published at Frankfort, many of the ex-soldierB of the district trented him very ungratefully in bis race for Congress. Many of them in a petition, he avows, requested him to become a candidate, and then at the election, by command of republican schemers, voted against him. Provide-' he aid not originate the petition business himself, the action of these men whs
despicable under the circumstances if he fixeil up the paper asking for signatures of ex-soldiers to got him to become a candidate for Congress, as some might think he did, then he should not be chagrined at the result. It is somewhat strange, if true, that men who had no other interest than that of friendship for a candidate should thus act. Thero are numorous tricks, dis honesty and moannc6s in politics, as Cheadld probably has learned ere this, and the petition business is one of them. It is about on par with a man who boasted of spending tho best four years of bis life in shooting at democrats, and a few years afterwards seeking political promotion from men belonging to that party.
WANT OF CONFIDENCE Since the election over twenty oanks in the United States have been placed in receiver's hands, the creditors to get whatever they cau out of them, but always much less than they put into them. In these cases we suppose "confidence had not been lestored" as republicans would eay, or tne "advance agent of prosherity" had missed connection some way and had failed to get there in time. Anyhow there will be great distress in places where these banks were located at the failure of the advance agent.
Many of the orthodox Jews of the country were much offendend at that portion of Cleveland's message in which Jesus Christ is referred to as a mediator. We don't know any other way for them to do under the circumstances than to remove to Jerusalem where Christ is not taken into consideration among the pious and God fearing of the country.
The ladies of Thomaston, Me., have organized a -'McKinley Cooking Club."
RUMORED NEW PAPER.
To Be Auti-Ring, Anti Bunnell and Anti-Journal-
Quiet rumors of the establishment early next ppring of a new republican daily and weekly newspaper in Crawfordsville are beard. Some republicans themselves are telling it aud urging it. It is a contest to be probably between the ring and nnti-ring uf the republican party. They Bay that their present organ has been cutting entirely "too wide a swath." that it is a ring paper strictly and those uot following out the directions ot the Landis-Bonnell-Jour-nal dictation are completely snubbed at every iurn, thnt the Journal during the late campaign contributed uot a cent in cash, neither did adime's worth of printing without charging high and extortionate rates for such work, and yet is securing the "gut fat" of the official printing. We would suggest to these dissatisfied anti-nngsters that they make up their minds to in vest largely in cash before getting their enterprise to be self-sus-taining, as it will take much of it to make the thing a success.
The ensuicg winter bids fair to be oue of much distress and suffering among vast numbers of the people. Those who cannot live on "confidence" alone, which i.- the main stimulant offerea by republican politicans, will in many cases have to call on the township trustee for assistance.

A clergyman of Ludington, Mich, told his congregation last Sunday that dancing is sinful, and as an object lesson left the pulpit for a moment and danced a few steps.
Catarrh Means Danger
Because if unchecked it may lead directly to consumption. Catarrh is caused by impure blood. This fact is fully established. Therefore, it is useless to try to cure catarrh by outward applications or inhalants. The true way to cure catarrh is to purify the blood. Hood's Sarsaparilla. the great blood purifier, cures catarrh by its power to drive out all impurities from the blooa. Thousands of people testify that they have been perfectly and permanently cured of catarrh S

Marvelous Results-
From a letter written by Rev. J. Gunderman, of Dimondale, Mich., we are per mi ted to make this extract: "I have bo
hesitation in recommending
Dr. King's New Discovery, as the results were almost, marvelous in tho case of my wife. While I was pastor of the Baptist Church at Rives Junction she was brought down with Pneumonia succeeding La Grippe. Terrible paroxysms of coughing would last hours with little interruption aDd it seemed as if she could not survive them. A friend recommended Dr. King's New Discovery it was quick in its work and highly satisfactory in results." Trial bottles free at Nye & Booe's drug store. Regular size 50c. and $1.00.

A tired stomach is very much tike, a sprained ankle. If you suffer lrom any of the symptoms of dyspepsia your stomach is tired. It needs a crutch We miiot relieve it of all work for a time, or until it is restored to its natural strength. To do this success fully, we must use a food which is already digested outside of the body, and which will aid the digestion of other foods that may be takan with it Such a product is the Shaker Digestive Cordial.
The Shakers have utilized the digestive principles present in plants for the manufacture of this article, and its success has been truly phenomenal. You can try it for the nominal sum of 10 cents, as sample bottles are sold by all druggists at this price.
