LOAN AGENTS TAKEN IN

By a Smooth Tongue Sharper Who Dissappears With 82,500

Mr. 11. in. Bryant and C. W. Burton, mortgage loan agents, Mr. Vannice, a ustice of the Peace, of Franklin town ship and his bondsmen, and Mrs. T. WMcMechan, of this city, were all surprised to learn a few days ago that some of them had bpen swindled by a trav-el-ng sharper out of 82,500, and that enmo of thorn would have to lose that much with some additional costs for the litigation to ariso in the matter before it ifi finally disposed of. Tho sharper appeared at tho oflices of Bryant and Burton early last tpriner and exhibited papers necrssary to secure a loan of $2,500, all of which were forged. Tho papers were a mortgage on a farm in Franklin township, the owner of which does not have to mortgage anything, and also a note. Tho papers were all properly signed and attested with the Justice 6ea! of tho township in which tho land is Bitnated, and everything was in proper ship shape for securing tho loan.

Tho swindler had no doubt studied and fixed up every detail thoroughly before seeking tho money. Coming to town with those papers ho approached both Bryant and Burton. The note and mortgage were scrutinized closely, and overything appearing satisfactory tho money was paid over to the scoundrel, having been placed by Mrs. T. W. McMechan in the hands of these gentlemen to loan. Tho discovery of tho swindle wub made a few days ago when the owner of tho farm purporting to have been mortgaged for §'2,500, was informed by a letter that interest was duo on the note. Coming to town at onco ho quickly informed them he bor rowed no money nor executed no mortgage, and the work of the sharper was for the first time discovered. Several 1 aw suits may result from it, the lirst one to bo likely dockoted being one against tho Justice, who acknowledged by his seal tho mortgage, and his bondsmen

Sheriff Charles Davis of this city wants to bo U. S, Marshal for tho district of Indiana so soon as the removal of the present democratic incumbent after tne McKinley administration begins grinding, taues place. Tho dutios of LT. S. Marshal are vory similar to those of a Sheriff, and if a republican i6 to have tho position Davis will certainly do as well as any of them. There aro no ''friends urging" this matter in particular, Davis aiming to urge it himsolf, and getting others to help him, as ho wants the office Cor tho money in it' and not necessary to pleaso ''friends."

int Another One In Hoc. Marshal Shackelford, of Ladoga, arrested Dr. Roland A. Wittshire, a prominent physician at Bowling tireen, Clay county, last Friday charged with illegal voting at tho recent election. It is alleged that tha doctor went to Ohio from Ladoga last March and opened a drug store there. Ho returned to Ladoga election day and voted under protests after which ho went to Howling tlreeu.

We suppose the Journal will term tho party having Dr, Wittshire arrested "an ex-convict," "plug," etc. It generally does that way whenever any of its party friends aro under arrest.

Despondency, detit, added to domestic difficulties caused Win. liolland, tho aged carpenter, living on east Market street, to take a largo quantity of the poison known as Paris (ireen on Saturday evening and at 11 o'clock at night he breathed hia last. Ilia condition was observed at 5 o'clock and a physician summoned, but all efforts to counteract the effects arising from the poison were in vain he was past all hopo. While laboring with him lie remarked, "T.'iey can't. Have me. I took a good big dose.'" Holland was in dobt to soiiio extent and was unr.ble to secure work at his trade of carpentering. hcsidcs.it is said, had had some disputes somewhat violent in niiturc, over political matters, with his wifo during tho progress of the campaign. His family consists of a wife, two sons and a married daughter. Ho was in the 7'2d year of his acre. Tho funeral occurred on Tuesday.

SHUTTING OFF THE GAS.

Owing to Fear of Scarcity Only Resi

The pressure of tho gas wells in the vicinity of Sheridan from which source the Crawfordsville company receives its supply, it is noticed is slowly becoming lightor, and in consequonce where possible tho gas must bo saved, and tho consumption lessened. All tho factories of tho city wero last week informed that owing to this (he gas would bo turned off and thoy must seek other sources for suppling them with heat for steam purposes. Tho establishments of Lyle & Reynolds, coflin factory, planing mill and others in town will havo to go back to coal and wood. In a year or two many think that the scant supply of gds will compel consumers in all cities not diroctly in tho gas belt to go back tc the use of wood.

BY POPULAR VOTE.

Are Contests for Post Masters to Be

Decided. 1'

An Indianapolis dispatch to tho Chicago Chronicle says that tho Indiana republican congressmen-elect havo decided to refer all applications for postollico appointments to tho patrons of the poatoflices, and elections will be held in every city and town of the stato after March 4. Tho congressmen-elect havo hit upon this plan to avoid the responsibility of making appointments themselves and will recommend no ono who has not received a majority of the votes of the republican patrons of the office to which ho aspiros. This conclusion i, is said to havo been reached through corrdspondenso between tho members-elect, and applicants havo been notified of tho fact.

The many aspirants for the Crawfordsville post office, including Bonnell, A. A. McCain, J. Cook, M. Nye and others, aro no doubt somewhat puzzled at tho out look under this now ruling. They will havo to hustle for tho job tho same as candidates for county oflices with tho rosult much in doubt to most of ttem, and yet that is really tho corroct plantosecure a post master—by popular vote, and not by being a pel of a congressman. It is said that if this rule should prevail, Walkup, defeated candidate for Clerk, will bo on hand to measswords with other contestants for Post Master, and as ho understands electioneering first rate may mako it docidedly warm for them. Mr. Bonnell, chairman of the republican county central committee, may not after all have a cinch on tho Post Oflice, as many have sup posed.

A Churn that Churns in One Minnte

1 have been in the dairy business all my life and have many times churned for an hour before butter would appear, so when I heard of a churn that would churn in a minute, I concluded to try it. Every day for a week I used it, and not only could I churn in a minute, but I got more and better butter than with the common churn. This is very important information to butter makers. Tho churn works easily and will churn an ordinary churning in less than 60 seconds. I have sold two dozen of those churns ill the past mont h. Every butter maker that has seen me. churn in less than a minute has bought one. You can obtain all desired information regardiag the churn by addressing .1.
