now thai tl.e elections Imve way, expi ct to Ik- iipplieantB for various soft plhei under State. unri admiuiKtration ollii itiltr. .ii.'l jiit iilu.iily beginning to liguii- fur ifieni. I hev are generally individuals who evoi- -re ili^ttnguiplied for much menial or manual labor, except (iurinir a •:HinpM'.gn mid c.in genetally I,- found hanging around the Court limine, or at some political headqUHiters. Gov. Mount, elect, la said alrouiiy lo have been compelled to listen to their importunities and is doubtless surprised at llie number of political friends he has in Crawfordsville, many of whom hardly knew him previous to his nomination. Many of these fellows will wants? per tlay jobs during the session of the legislature, while others will Wiiit until the inauguration of McKinley, when some of them will advance in force on Washington City and seek jobs of dilTerent kinds which
Congressmen and others will control. Many, of course, will fail, and oh uiy! how they will curee the mgratitudo of republicans.
Appointments by t.'nv, illomil.
The Indianapolis News of Saturday said: Governor-elect Mount, who will take odico January 8, will have a tew appointments to make. Robert A. Urnwn, of Franklin, who at this time is Deputy Secretary of State, will probably be hip private secretary.
Among those who would like to lie appointed Adjutant-General by him are lienjamin Richardson, N. K. Ruckle and Thomas M. Defreop. Th« flovernor will also have the appointment of a Quart,erinaHter-Oo ,eral, it custodian of the State House to succeed Timothy Grillin, and a Democratic memberof the I'joerd of State Tax Commissioners to succoed David M. Allen, of l^rankfort.
Now this appointing of "l'rown of Franklin" would not be fair to Finley Mount, we beg to suggest, besides there can he little doubt but that Finley really expects something, and tho Gorernor elect may have some considerable nepotism in his composition, and like tho average republican office holder wouid like all his relations to bo provided for. No doubt the roads will be kept, dusty on the Shannondale pike fiom hero to Mount's farm until the "elect'1 moves to IudianapoliB when the boys learn of the numerous soft "snaps" ho has at his disposal.
A .HyMcriouft ('Irciiiiisimico. A peculiar case is reported from Kingman, Fountain county. Addio Derby, a young woman of that village, hired a horse and buggy from a livery stable, for a drive into tho country, to call upon John Barker, whoso attentions she had been receiving. Not returning at it late hour her uncle went in search of her, and a few miles dig tant he tnot tho couple in tho buggy and spoke to them. Receiving no ans wer, he began an investigation, whereupon Barker jumped from tho vehicle and ran away. Further examination showed that the gi' waB lying in tho bottom of the buggy, apparently dead. Friends hurriedly removed her to Kingman, whore the physicians pronounced her case one of poisoning. Barker has not reported, and no reliable information is obtainable as to how she was prostrated. It is thought that tho girl will die.
No Radical Ctifuigftt Contemplated. Tho re-election of S. E. Nicholson, of Howard county, to the Legislature by a majority of S00 has occasioned no little alarm among tho saloon-keepers and bi ewers of tho State, who foar that his return moans still more stringent measures against the liquor tratic that were embodied in the Nicholson temperance law passed two years ago. The State Liquor League has issued a manifesto calling on all saloon people to exert their inlluence against, additional legislation. The present purpose of Mr. Nicholson, so far as he has expressed himself on the subject, is not to urge any radical changes in the Nicholson law, though he will probably ask to have it strengthened in a few points where it is not as effectivo as ho had hoped,
C'liaii|(- in G'rcseciit Proprietors, The OroBcent will change hands in the near future. Bayard Gray, son of tho late Isaac P. Gray, has bought tho interest of Chas. Fennell and tho publication will be continued with B. IIDorner, one of the present owners, and Mr. Gray as proprietors. At present it is not known the exact date on whish the chango will be mado.—Frankfort Times.
Hei'ded Lot. Warren Davis made a bet before tho tho election on Bryan with a republican in which the conditions wore that if he won the republican was to pay him £900 for a lot wcrth ?400, but if McKinley won the man got the lot free. The tonus were complied with, and week the lot was dordod to tho Kinloy man without cost to him.
