WORKWOMAN
Why the Indiana Laboring Man Is Interested in Electing Democratic Legislators and State
Officials.
DEMOCRACY DEFENDS LABOR.
To tin l«boror« and wage earners of Indiana: During the last 12 years the Democratic legislatures in Indiana have enacted the following laws for the benefit and proteetiou of the wago earuers of this state: 1. The law giving the laborer alien upon th'1 products of his labor for wages and materials furnished. 2. The law making tho wages of the laborer a pro .'erred debt in the case of fuilure or insolvency of his employer. 3. The law making a day's work in public employment consist of eight hours. 4. Tho law providing for the ventilation of mines and the safety of miners. 5. The lav |in, iiiting the blacklisting of employes. (J. The law protecting workingmen from being cheat.'tl and imposed upon by what is known as "pluck-me" stores. 7. The law prohibiting tho importation of alien or foreigu laborers. 8. The law repoaling the "infamous conspiracy act" of 1881. This wicked law was passed by the Republican legislature of that year. 9. Tho law protecting the labor union labels. 10. The law providing for a standard coal screen for the protection of the coal miners. 11. The law requiring employers to provide seats for female employes in stores and factories. 12. The law requiring the payment of laborers every week. 13. The law prohibiting the employment of children under the age of 14 years in cert.-iu kinds of factories. 14. The law repealing the law enacted by the Republican legislature permitting aliens.to acquire the farm lands of this state. lo. The law making it a penal offense to bring into this state armed men, whether Pinkertou detectives or any other armoa force, for the purpose of intimidating or shooting down the laboring people of this state. This law is as follows (Acts 1880, p. 30"
1)
"WHO MAY BB APPOINTED. (1) That no sheriff of a county, mayor of a city or other persons authorized by law to appoint special deputies, marshals or policemen in this state to preserve tho public peace and prevent or quell piiblio disturbance, shall hereafter appoint nfc such special doputies, marshals or polie£hien, any person who shall not have resided continuously in this state for the period of one year at least, and in the county where such appointment is made for the peroid of at least six mouths prior to tho date of said appointment. "IMPORTATION PROHIBIT*D. (2.) That it shall be unlawful for any person, company, association or corporation to bring or import into this state any person or persons, or association of persons, for the purpose of discharging the duties devolving upon sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, marshals, policemen, constables or peetoo officers in tho protection or preservation of public or private property, or in the punishment of any person violating the oriinimil laws of this state."
It is further provided that any person •violating the above provisions shall be imprisioned in the state prison for not more than one year, to which may be added a fine of not more than $100 for each offense. 16. The law regulating and enlarging the rights.-of laborers when t.l^y receive personal injuries through the nogligonce of railroads and other corporations. 17. The law encouraging labor unions and organizations and for the purpose protecting the members thereof.
These 17 wholesome laws, just specified, constitute such a record of practical friendship to the cause of labor on the part of the Democratic party as can be found to the credit of no other party in any stiato, at any time in the history of the United States.
Bui tho Demoorauc party has a legislative record on other great subjects in Indiana which challenges the admiration and support of all her fair-minded and intelligent people.
It enacted the Australian ballot law and other laws for tho purity of elections. The law provides that "Who ever, for the purpose of influencing a voter, seok6 by violence or threats of violence to enforce the payment of a debt or to eject or threaten to eject from any houM he may occupy or begin a criminal prosecution or to injure the business or trade of an eleotor or, if an employer of laborers or an agent of such employer, threatens to withhold the wages or to dismiss from service any voter in his employment or refuses to allow to any such employe time to attend at the tlaoe of election and vote— shall be fined not more than $1,000 nor less than $20, imprisoned ia She state prison not more than five years nor less than one year, and disfranchised and rendered incapable of holding any offloe of trust or profit for any determinate period."
It enacted the present taxflaw by -virtue of which the working, taxp&yiag people of the state will, as the years roll on, be the gainers by many millions.
It enacted the flohoolbook law and took the supply of books to our sohool ohildren oat of tho hands of trusts and speculators.
It enacted the law for a state board of oharlties. These are aome of the leading features of the Democratic policy, Mta they oenetttats eome of the powerful reasons, among many others, why ILIUMU ^T_H REMAIN a Democratic state.

It would seem much more appropriate if some of the preachers of this locality would take lees interest in politics and devote more time to tho spiritual welfare of their flocks. Their influence might bo mado stronger and more enduring if they did. The public has little use for any minister devoting most of hiB time to politics.
Theodore Rodemaker, an old Gorman resilient of Peru, made a center rush for tbe carriage in whicb Bryan was seated Thursday last, ana putting forth his right hand, shook tho hand of the candidate for the presidency. Mr. Rodemaker then made his way out of tbe crowd and Baid that he would not watb the hanci until Bryan was elected.
Republican managers in town on Saturday biBt showed a great want of good breeding in placing McKinley badges on their women and children and having them mix in tbe crowdB. No such things as Bryan badges were worn by boys and girls on the day of the republican rally, and no attempts on that day were made to insult republicans or raise trouble. That party in town is largely composed, however, of people with little sense and poor breeding.
Some months since, Miss Grace Van Why, daughter of one of the well known citizens of Clinton county, read an advertisement of a California gentleman who frankly said he wanted a wife. Tho gentloman'a name was given as Benjamin, and ho lived at Near Oak, California. Their correspondence increased in frequency and soon preliminary arrangements for a wedding had been made and laBt Wednesday MisB Van Why left for the Golden Gate State, where she will become Mrs. Benjaim. Neither has ever seen the other, but as she is a young woman of good sense, beauty and accomplishments, and he a man of wealth and position, tho prospects are good for a favorable conclusion of tho pretty story.

When a man owns a blooded horse he is always careful of its health. He looks after its diet and is particular that the feeding shall be regular and right. While he is doing this it is likely as not that he is himself suffering from some disease or disorder that if left to itself will go on and on till it develops seriously.
When the trouble gets so bad that he cannot work, he will begin to give himself the care he gave the horse at the start. The time to cure a disease is at the beginning and better than all is to so watch your health that disease will never come. Good, pure, rich red blood is the best insurance against disease of anv kind. Almost all diseases come from impure or impoverished blood. Keep the blood pure and strong and disease can find 110 foothold.
That is the principle on which Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery works. It clf-anses, purifies and enriches the blood it p- ts aiul keeps the whole body in perfect order. Makes appetite good, digestion strong, assimilation perfect. It brings ruddy, virile health. "I got a cancer on my mnpue and had It cut out. I consulted fifteen hfferent physicians without deriving any benefit. At last I turned to Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. I persisted iu its use and my health is better than ever before. Formerly every accidental wound I received began to fester, would nut heal now, such lacerations heal themselves."
Respectfully yours.
