HANNA'S CAMPAIGN FUND The worst element in this campaign is the part which Mark hanna's fui 1 is playing. Candor compels mo to give the facts without regard to whether Mr. Pryan's election would be a good thiDg or a bad thing. There is plenty of evidence, in my opinion, to show that this is rapidly becoming the most corrupt and corrupting political struggle known to the American people.
Bryan may bo defeated, but the inlluence of money anil of Mark Hanna's methods upon the voters of Wisconsin, iu common with the voters of other states, will not disappear after election day.
Let me give one example. I speak of a matter 1 know and understand. The Reliance machine works, owned by the Edward P. Allia company, are situated in Milwaukee. There tiro employed in this establishment something like 1,800 men. Here tho Bryan sentiment is very strong.
It is an absolute fact that eighteen working men in this establishment are at this moment on tho pay-roll ot the republican state committee as secret political agitators. Their companions are ignorant of this fact and do not euspect it.
The result is that thes men have an influence which they could i.ol. possibly wield wero the truth known.
Tho republican committee has also, I am informed, upon its pay-rolls a large number of men in another establishment, which employs about 2,000 workingmen. In several of the factories here gold standard arguments are pinned each week to tho envelopes containing wages.
The republican committee has also sent men into the mining districts of I Wisconsin to otfer So in Mexican silver for 82.75 in American money.—Milwaukee special to N. Y. World (gold bug.)
Tin: corruption fund raised by the national republican campaign managers is larger this year than ever known. Hanna understands thoroughly tbe art of squeezing the wealthy corporations and syndicates in the interest of the party, and this year has got in his work in good style.
Not all Western cherries in Eastern markets come from California. Oregon shippers sent two car-loads East within a week from Salem and Portland.
THE GOVFRNOR'S ASPIRATI0FSW l« greatly fenr tiiat there is uru niiiu who will cotne out if tins with featlicrss yretiliv titlled, and tliut is Ciov. Matthews, lie ilcmrep, it is eotiBtautly aesorti il, the position of I •,^- Senator in the i'Vui.1 of the majority of tho State h-oit-^ature ileno iTlitic this winter. IK', however, is nut, wo believe, adding to his laurels judged by report?, by his attempted nianipuhitioi of political litTaire. lb- anta :oiii/."d
Cliairman Holt ot the St.i'.e ceiilcal committee, by refusion to continu the a]ipointinent of WcCullouuh as all flection commissioner, the matter tinall.y ieKullint in the resignation of 1KU\ In this district, it is well uiu'lerstood, Unit the nomination of Cheadle, not a democrat, was brought around by Jud^e McCahe, C'apt. A Urn and one or two others, guided by the advice, suggestion and aid of Gov. Matthews, who desired the populist inlluence wherever and whenever convenient iu his desire to bo Senator. It may bo that there was much more of this work in other dis tricts of tho State. Our opinion that Gov. Matthews departing from the usual discrete and level headed course th.it has distinguished in, has already raised combative forces sulliciently powerful to crush out his future political aspirations for some years to cotne.
HOLT'S RESIGNATION. Chairman llolt, of ttie democratic State central committee, resigned laet week and Parks M. Martin, of Ow'-u county, appointed to the position. The resignation at this time in the midst of the campaign is to be regretted, and plainly stated cannot but be demoralizing more or less for a time to the paity's interests, llolt was distinctively a gold bug, and opposed the Chicago nominations and was not in sympathy with a majority of the p.utv on the free silver question. The ability or political tact of Mr. Martin i= now to be shown and it is hoped that it will be displayed bv the exercise of such wor'.i as may greatly aid in the party's triumph in November.
Ti i:i:oid bug fellows you that if you have bimetallism you will drive all the gold from rhe country Well, facts are better any time than theory. I ranee is on a bimetallic basis and she has more gol 1 than any other country in the world. Tho supply of gold is more than 8SC.0,000.000. She h.,s •:200,000,000 more gold thau single gold standard Germany, nearly s.'JOO.OOU.OOO more than gold standard Euglan Take even Russia au absolute single silver standard country an.: she has close to toOO,000,000 in gold. Now with these l'acts and figures before them can any single gold standard ni'in have t.lje hardihood to stand up and say that bimetallism will drive the gold trom the country?
SUITosi-: tho gold parties succeed in compelling the people this year to vote according to their dictation and thus elect McKinlev and establish tho goki standard on a permanent basiB in this country, what is to become of the farmer and wage-earner? Before another election comes he will be in such a condition that ho will be completely at the mercy of tho gold power. The Australian ballot law will probably be repealed and his only safeguard thus taken from him. Now is the time to prevent the calamity. Let the people vote now to secure their rights under tho law.
HON. W.M. J. BKVAN is continuing his canvass, and this week spoke in Kentucky and North Carolina. Next week ho is iu Baltimore and on east through New Jersey into Maine. He will speak iu this State at Indianapolis next month.
