John Mount, the Drayman, and a Traveling Man Know Just
What it Means-
Friday night of last week at the east end of the Yountsvillo bridge, four miles south-west of town about midnight, John Mount, the drayman, and a traveling innn from Logans]) rt, named Jiillrnan, gave a practical illustration of holding lip their hands preparatory to being robbed. Mount was bringing the man from ParUe county, where ho had been on business, to Crawfordsville, where lie intended talcing tho train next morning for his home at Logansport. Just at the east end of the bridge three men, masked, stepped out from tho roadside, and in tirm tones ordered itlount to stop, and for both uien to throw up their hands. They obeyed at once. There were surprised, but saw that no argument or delays would go, as by the dim light they observed that the men were armed and meant business strictly. After getting out of the buggy they went through Mount's pockets securing GO and a silver watch, llis companion, the traveling man, fared some little better, the thieves got $i only from him, finding no other valuables that they desired. After securing the money the thieves ordered thorn to "get in and go on and not look back" accompanying the command with an oath. Of course the men rapidly complied. In fact they were anxious to move away quick and reached Crawfordsville an hour afterwards glad to know that tbey were yet alive and well.
They told their adventure to the police, but of course this did no good, considering the length of time the robbers had to move away or conceal themsolves. The genera) opinion seems to be that the men doing this work reside in the locality, not far from where this hold up took place. Only about a year ago Dr. Brown, of Alamo, was stopped on this road about a mile only from the robbery of Friday night and compelled to surrender hib valuables to eome midnight marauders. It might bo well for the law abiding citizeas of that part of the country to keep eyes upon some people around there who apparently fare well without much labor. Doing so may result in an explanation of these highway robberies.
Much for Iiislcy.
James Insley, who acted as starter for the races at the Monroe county fair, received the following "high-falutin," long winded notice in the Bloomington Telephone: "Col. J. J. Insley, the handsome and courtly starter of the races this week, is one of the most noted horsemen in Indiana. He is a society leader in Crawfoidsville where his handsome turn-outs are always admired, and whore bis word when relating to, fine horses, fine women and fine —well, hydrant water—is supreme. Col. Insley is a West Point graduate and served with notable distinction through the civil war and the subsequent Indian wars in the West. He has in his body two bullets, tired into him by the celebrated Modoc chief, Captain Jack, at the time of the Canby massacre. Col. Insley is much pleased with Bloomington."
Northwest Inilinim G'cufercnce. The annual meeting of the Northwest Indiana Conference will be held at Terre Haute, beginning September 8. it iB recalled that the first meeting of this conference was held in Terre Haute forty-five years ago. One conference sufficed for Indiana from 1832 until 1844 when two were formed. Again, in 1852 there was another division, and four conferences were formed. The Crawfordsville, Valparaiso, South Bend, Lafayette and Ureencastle districts are embraced in this conference. According to the reports submitted last year, there are 31G churches, 38,451 full members, 1,727 probationers, 110 loca preachers, 357 Sunday schools.
Dcnth of Marguerite Ilcnklo. After an illness of many weeks Marguerite Henklo expired last Saturday forenoon. Marguerite was a sweet bright child, known to many persons by her intelligent and pleasing disposition, and not alone to her parents will she be greatly missed, but by hosts of persons, old and young, who esteemed her for manners and actions, even from her earliest years. Her age was nearly eight years. The sympathy of all acquaintances will be extended to her parents, who feel that the light of the household has gone out. The funeral occured on Monday forenoon which was attended by large numbers of paople.
Mbades Ilotel Cloned. The hotel at the Shades heretofore under the management of a Mr. Garwood, closed this ween and the proprietor has left. Visitors to this resort must bring their own grub go away hungry. The Shades could, under liberal and enterprising up-to-date management be made a paying investment and become a popular resort, but mostly heretofore has been under a penurious five cent policy and iu consequence has not thrived as it might.
The British steamship Strathdon, which haB just arrived at Philadelphia, is entirely manned by Japanese. They have shown themsolves to be excellent sailors.
A Mockery of the T,n\v. There was a ball game on Sunday, at the Triplet Park, between the Iiockville and Brazil clubs at Brazil. The church pjople in the vicinity of the park have been making a tight against Sunday ball playing, and they were waiting an opportunity when they could secure evidenco that an admission fee was chargod. In order to evade the law, the management yesterday announcod that ati admission fee would be charged to witness a bicycle race, it beiug ..'laimed that there was no inderdiction of bicycle racing, after which there would be a free ball game. The minister of the Harmony M. E. church purchased four tickets and entered tho grounds, coming out immediately aud tiling affidavits against all the players. These affidavits were placed in the hands of constables Overton and Cole, who started in a a buggy for the grounds. Coroner Gitford, anticipating their iuteutions, drove after them. He forced them into a race, and beat them to the grounds, and bofore they had time to serve the warrants tie arrested both of them for racing on the highway. The constables then gave up the struggle.

Geo. Shaffer went to U'ville., at the time of the high water a couple of weeks back. He took with him his summer wages, tucked securely on his inside pocket, as he thought. George came back but his wages still remain in C'ville., and iu all probability are now being, or have beon spent by some light lingered gent of that burg. In plain English George had his pocket picked for a sum somewhere in the neif. borhood of 88o. He thinks it was done while he was viewing the Vandalia wreck which occured while he was there or at a fire which he went to see. Anyhow George is out his summer wages and thinks he has paid well for the small bit of experience he had.— New Richmond Enteprise.

Out along Black creek and surrounding country hogs and cattle are dying by the hundreds from tho poisonous bites of a swarm of flies that are somewhat larger than the common house tiy. Ilogs and cattle have been bitten by tho flies until their backs become a festering mass. Fever then sets in and death follows.—Sentinel correspondence.
Farmers from the Black creek region this week say they are unaware of "hogs and cattle dying by the hundreds" out there, and it is quite probable that this correspondent drew on his imagination for a largo portion of this information,

Marvelous Results.
From a letter written by liev. J. Gunaeriuan, of Dimondale, Mich., we are permitted to make this extract: "1 have no hesitation in recommending Dr. King's New Discovery, as the results were almost marvelous in the case of my wife. While I was pastor of the Baptist hurch at River Junction she was brought down with pneumonia succeeding lagrippe. Terriblo paroxysms of coughing would last hours with little interruption and it seemed as if she could not survive them. A friend recommended Dr. King's NBW Discovery it was quick in its work and highly satisfactory in results." Trial bottles free at Xye & Booe's Drug Store- Regular size oOe. and §1,00.

Catarrh "cures" in liquid form to b3 taken internally, usually contain either Mercury or Iodide of Potassa, or both, which are injurious if too long taken. Catarrh is a local, not a blood disease, caused by sudden change to cold and damp weather. It starts in tho nasal passages. Cold in the head causes excessive flow of mucus and, if repeatedly neglected, the results of cararrh will follow and oftentimes an offensive discharge. Ely's Cream Balm is the acknowledged cure for these troubles and contains no mercury nor any injurious drug.
