Summer Resorts on the Monon
The summer resorto on the Monon are more than usually popular this year. West Baden and French Lick springs, in Orange county, are overflowing with visitors, and tho hotels hare all they can do. l'aoli, t:ie county seat, has opened a rival sanitarium, which is well patronized. The waters of the various springs differ materially in their constituents, and ure successfully prescribed for a great variety of maladies. Tne woods in the neighborhood abound in game and all the streams teem with tiBh some of lliem having been stocked by the government fish commission. All indications point to West Baden (and the neighboring springe) afi the great sanitarium and popular summer resort of the west.
Cedar Lake, forty miles from Chicago is a favorite picnic and outing spot, where the Monon has a fine wooded park of nearly 400 acres. Tho fishing is first rate. tf

AN EASY BET TO WIN.
It Took Orly a Sbort Time to CoJI^st ".More Than Twenty" Fools. They stepped to the edge of the sidewalk and looked long and earnestly in the direction of the cornice of one of the big buildings. Of course uuder the circumstances the man who had been standing in the doorway felt impelled to join them. He could not see anything extraordinary at the top of the building, but lie kept his eyes upturned because they did.
A man who was hurrying along saw the three, and he at once forgot where ho was going and what, ho had to do, and joiued them. "I told you so," said the man who had first cast his eyes in that direction, and ho ruado a motion as if to point out something to his companion.
Four men who wero passing saw the gesture and stopped to investigate, and before they had fairly fixed their gaae upon the cornice three others joined them. "You may be right," returned the companion of the man who had first spoken, "hnt you said 20, you know."
Six more people, including two women, wero now straining their eyes to see what was wrong with the cornice, and a rumor was in circulation that some one had tried to throw a child out of one of the windows. This was promptly denied by tho man who knows it all mid who is always present on sucli an occasion. Ho said that a gang of counterfeiters had been found on tho top floor and had taken refuge on the roof, where they were preparing to do battle with the officers who had been sent to arrest them.
Meanwhile tho little group at tho edge of the sidowalk had swelled to a crowd •f over a hundred. "Well, are you satisfied now?'' asked tho man who hi first stopped.1 "Yes," replied his companion. "There are more than 20." "More than 20 what:" anxiously inquired several of those nearest the two. "Fools," returned the first speaker promptly, "inspired idiots. Yousee, wo had a dispute as to the number of fools to bo seen on the streets of a great city, uid I bet him we could gather 20 around as in ten minutes by simply standing out hero and looking up at the cornice. Gentlemen, there are more than 20 of you here, and I win."
Then a hundred or more solemn looking men, and a few women, went on about their business, and they all felt like kicking themselves without intermission for a period of not less than two hours.—Chicago Post.
The Wheel and England.
Take the Great North road. Except upon market days, ono might have traveled any 50 miles along it between Higbgate and York without meeting 50 people. Towns which literally lived by the road had drifted into a lielplossly somnolent condition, from which no apparent human agency could awaken them, and tho stranger thereto was stared at as much as if he had been a highlander or an Iroquois iu full warpaint. The highway itself, being of no particular value to anybody since the Great Northern railway began to whirl the old patrons of the road along at 45 miles an hour, was allowed to decay, and in wet seasons or snowy weather was well nigh impassable.
The rage for wheeling has produced a rapid transformation. Station yourself at any point you like, and try to count the machines which pass on a fine Saturday afternoon during the course of an hour, and you will soon abandon tho task as hopeless. Then, consider that every rider of every machine spends something during his trip, even if it bo but the cost of a temperance drink. Consider that a very large number of Saturday riders sleep out and make good meals during their journey that they are constantly spending something over and above their actual traveling expenses that the wonderful extension of our acquaintance with our own country resulting from these peaceful invasions of it by the inhabitants, not merely of the metropolis, but of every city and considerable town in the land, has led to the refurbishing up of such local lions as the castle, or the abbey, or the great
Somebody's birthplace, or the waterfall, or tho view (the inspection of all of which means the expenditure of money), and an approximate idea may be gained of the influence upon national trade which this pastime alone exercises.— Chambers' Journal.
Superstitions About the Weather. Popular superstititions about the weather linger long, and in spite of the teachings of science people persist in be lieving that seaweed hung up in a backyard will become damp at the approach of rain, or that a similar indication is to be found in the fact that a pig is eeen chewing straw. Mr. Riohard Inwards, the president of the Meteorological society, it is needless to say, has no belief whatever in such methods of prophesying the weather. What belief could be moio firmly rooted in many people than the belief that if it rains on St. Swithin's day it will rain for 40 days? "An unadulterated fallaoy," snch is what Mr. Inwards calls it, yet in spite of tho evidence accumulated upon the subject by the Meteorological ofiice, people go on putting faith in it as though there were no such thing as experience. Then, again, it is said that a full moon will clear away clouds, and that a change of moon on a Saturday or a Sunday is an indication of floods, although not a little evidence in favor of either belief has ever been adduced.—London Newa

A. Ruefal Difference.
Thtfro can be no question that "VCIT m«py of the differences, mental and bediiv, that exist between tho average Frenchman and the averago Englishman are caused by tho distinct methods of education that prevail on the different sides of tho channel. You would not like your son's only schooling to be obtained in France. On the other hand, you have a pretty distinct belief that if French boys were sent over here young enough and put to good English schools, they would grow up into a very fair sort of Britons. A typical story of the ways of French, schoolboys, with their ushers, is reported in recent morning papers. Some spirits had been smuggled into one of the dormitories—a thing, we fear, not altogether unknown in some English establishments. It is even conceivable that the English master who discovered the bottle would have confiscated it to his own use, but thiB would not have been at the invitation of his pupils. But the French pion in question was contented to make one of the party, and as ho was not so used to rum as bis pupils, be got so terribly drunk that he died. Happily for the Frenoh boy*, their compulsory military service give* them an opportunity, later on for learning a little discipline.—Pall Mall Oftsettti.
