Remley's residence, seven miles northwest «f town, when four men alighted, went into tho house and after a few moments returned to their wagon and departed, going iu a north-east direction. Two young men living with Mr. Remloy returned to tho house an hour or two later aud looking tho room over observed that some property, including a watch anil a revolver, were missing Alartu was given-at once, and the four men in tho wagon having been seen about tho premises, suspicion at once pointed to them and their capture determined upon. A number of persons, twenty or more, started out in the direction taken by the men, and lato in the evening they were overtaken near

Hunt's school house, four miles northwest of Darlington, a distance of over 15 miles having been covered by the persons. The men were brought to town and jailed. Search of their persons failed to disclose tho missing property and they were permitted to go. If they had taken tho property they had successfully concealed it,

A Phenomenal Corn Crop.' The corn crop in Cass county is bettei than ever before and the yield will ba phenominal. Already farmers are com. plaining that there will be so much corn that it will be worth little or nothing when offered for s&le. The low price of potatoes and cats is discouraging, potatoes being worth but 13 cents a bushe and oats 8 cents. Hay of the best quality may be had for t8.00, and, on the whole,

farmers feel that the price of their product is very much below what it should be.

A "STUMP SUCKER" HORSE

Looking around for a geutlo family horse, freo from defects or blemishes, Ilev.S. V. Leech, pastor of the Mothodist church, strayed to tho auction sale

I ween his teeth and create a noise that could tie heard for a long distance, and at all hours of tho night. This was continned for weeks, and the minister then began to think he had been cheated, I had had a dofect.ioe horso sold to Mm tlii-.I would be dear at any price. He then consulted Cooley it Hamilton. They avowed that they sold him on tho guarantee made to theru by the former owner of the horse, that they knew nothing of this defect of tho horse, and would not take, the horso back nor refund tho uionev. Accordingly suit has been ontered against them an attorneys employe !, and the result of it will be watched with some interest. An old horseman, epoa'.ung of tho case t. other day, said that 'vuuip sucking'' horses aro frequently broken of tho h,:bit by placing muzzles -.ver their moutus after they are done eating, and that after a few months thov aro broken of the habit entirely, Perhaps this would havo been cheaper than costs an 1 attorney's feos.

Tho belief in a race of giants was once almost universal and held mini recent years. Even today largo skeletons When found are sometime. reported its being those of giant human beings. This was especially true of the period about the tenth and eleventh centuries, and in the latter a most amazing discovery was reported, which threw the scientific world of the time into great excitement. It was said that the body of Pallas, tliQ sun of Evander, had been discovgul k^}tbi)iq tojafc o£ th2._emper6r Henry ill.

nious, and it is unnecessary to star* proved to havo belonged to a lmgo foss i' elephant. As lato as the fifteenth century a war uf words was waged over a find of largo bouee, ono party claiming that tlioy belonged to tho giant Tetttoboclius. In 1857 a giant was discovered in Switzerland. Tho council of Lucerne requested a learned scientific man, Professor Folix Plater of Basel, to report upon it, and ho not only announced the bones as part of a human gituit, hut inado a completo restoration, showing the man 20 feet high, which the proud city adopted as an ancestor in the arms of tho commonwealth. Tho design and somo of tho bones can still bo seen in the collego of Jesuits at Lucerne. Uufortuuately for tho theory and much to the discomfiture of the people who had raised to a high pinnaclo this mighty ancestor, it was found to bo tho remains of an elephant.

Nearly all tho mastodon tinils in this country wore attributed to giants, hut there is no ovideuco that a human giant ever existed over 8 feet in height, and it is extremely doubtful if this height was ever attained.

Giants other than human are very common in all branches of tho animal kingdom—giants in every sense when compared to their pygmy representatives of today. Some years ago somo laborers in tho Senalik hills of India were engaged upon a government work when they camo upon tho romains of a turtle Unit proved beyond question that these animals had their giants in the. days of old. Tho shell which the men exposed might have been used as a shelter for several men, and at first, before its bony nature was observed, it was thought by tho natives to bo a hut ol some kind. Fortunately tho bonos wero uninjured, and they were taken out and removed to the

British museum, where a complote res toration of tho animal may be seen. Tito length of the turtle was 10 foot, its horizontal circumference 25 fuet, and its girth 15 feet, but it was estimated by Bcientists that this was not an adult, and that when fully grown this lingo creature would display a domelike back 8 or 9 feet high, giving a total length of 20 feet.

One of the common animals in equatorial South America and in Central America is tho lizard, iguana, which attains a length of 4 or 5 feet and is considered a large lizard, but if was a pygmy when compared 'to an ancestor that once wandered over England and various portions of the world. A number oi years ago .some.workiugmon wero excavating and blasting iu a quarry near Maidstone, England, when somo bones wero uncovered that, caused profound astonishment on lite pair of tho tinders. Tho skeleton was perfect, and its it was lifted our, bone by bone, their amazement increa.'-cd, tn-1 thu news was spread all over lh'J wvc.ntiy, a!trading large numbers of people.
