SECEIVED HIS SENTENCE-
Efforts of Hawk's Attorneys to Secure
a New Trial a Failure-
Every effort that could be BUggesh-cl were used by Hawk's attorneys nt court on Friday and Saturday of Inst week to seizure for him a new trial. They brought in allidavits for instance that ont juror had been heard conversing with Cius Davis, the .Market street blacksmith, legtuding the trial, b„t this was of no effect by jimt-r affidavits denying it. Certain instructions to tho jury by the court, it was alleged by Hawk's attorneys, were wrong and led the jury to form improper conclusions that the grand jury had no authority to b'-ing in such an indictment at. it was beyond its jurisdiction, etc. Theso efforts, however, were in vain, the Court holding that everything was in regular form and the twelve men knew what they were doing. Hawk was asked to stand up and receive his sentence, which he did, being much effected at the time. "Can you show" asked the Court, "why the sentence of the jury should not be imposed." To this Hauk replied: "I am innocent." The,efore tho sentence was pronounced—five years' imprisonment and §50 fine—and Hawk was then taken away to jail by the sheriff.
Koltomo Model Town. Kokomo, the home of S. E. Nicholson, author of the famous temperance law that bears his name, is probably the best governed town in the state of its size. One by one the policemen have been dropped from the force until only three remain, beside the City Marshal. The three patrolmen are on night duty and during tho day Marshal Bennett is the only officer on the streets. There are few cities of 12,000 population that can parallel this record,
Crawfordsville, with a population of of 10,000, requires five policemen according to the ideas of some citizens, although really three is sufficient. Horace Ensininger, when marshal, with one man, controlled the city and saw that the laws were enforced, and it was in days when Crawfordsville was a much tougher city than now.

When your stomach begins to trouble you, it needs help. The help it needs, is to digest your food, and until it gets it, you won't have any peace. Stomach trouble is very distressing, very obstinate, very dangerous. Many cf tho most dangerous diseases begin with simplo indigestion. PLANS OP SILVER MEN
TO HOLD A CONFERENCE
AT
CHICAGO TOMORROW.
Keprtuentatlves of the I)emoct«tle Blme* tallle Orgai&.Atlon Will Alembic to Complete Arrancoiuenta tor Carrying on the Fight.
Washington, June 29.—Senator Harris left yesterday for Chicago to be present. at the Democratic silver conference, which will be hold in that city, beginning on Tuesday, under the auspices of the Democratic bimetallic organization. He is chairman of tliia organization, and has been since it was instituted in this city, a year ago.
Speaking of the purpose of the conference Senator Harris said it had been called in order to afford tho silver Democrats an opportunity to compare views and look the ground over preparatory to the national convention, and that it would probably continue daily until the beginning of the convention. He also said that the meeting would not be confined to members of the Democratic organization, but that there would he representatives present from every state delegation friendly to silver.
Further than this the senator declined to commit himself as to the purpose of the meeting, but it Is learned from an authoritative source that the silver Democrats regard this conference as a very important affair.
The organization, under whoso auspices the meeting is called, has been laboring in season and out for the promotion of tho silver cause within the Democratic ranks. They have had their headquarters at Senator Harris' house, and from that quarter have conducted a correspondence with chosen representatives in all parts of the country to whom have been intrusted the organization of the silver forces, not only in every state, but in every county in every state in the union where it was considered possible to effect the lodgment of a silver idea. Irhe movement grew out of the meeting hel4 at the
Metropolitan hotel ia this city? Igfit summer whlc)i the plane w6fe prepared and an exfioquve oommittee, consisting of one member trom each state, was appointed. ¥He wor£ haa been flujjtly v^ry thoroughly periormeS.
The purpose df the ante-convention meelfng }b to so SBlidlfy the ellvej organization as to renijgf it thoroughly effective in the eifecutiofl pf the i%ns of the silver'leaders in the oonVefltton, and also to prevont the eScfoachmeni of the gold foroes. It had been thelf pyrpose" £'(5 discuss the platform to be adopted and also consider the availability of candidates. There has been much correspondence bå upon these two poinfs. The plan has been to keep candidates in ths background until the conference could be held, with the view of having the conference free to choose. This has proved impracticable, and it is understood that the leaders in the movement fear that they will De unable to control in this matter as the had at one time hoped they might. They still hope, however, to be practically able to make the platform before the convention meets.

Constantinople, Juno 29.—G-eorgi Berovitch, Prince of Samos, has been appointed governor of Crete, in succession to the Mussulman governor, Abdullah Pasha. The island of Samos is autonomous, although it pays a tribute to the Turkish government, and Prince Georgi Berovitch is a Christian.
The recall of the former Christian governor of Crete, Caratheodary Pasha, and the appointment, in his stead, of the Mussulman, Abdullah Pasha, who was implicated in the Armenian troubles, fanned into flame the smoldering discontent of the Cretan Christians and resulted in the disorders which have prevailed for several months in the island. The appointment of the Prince of Samos seems designed to oonciliate Greece, which has manifested sympathy with the discontent, of the Cretans under Turkish rule.
London, June 29.—The Times publishes a dispatch from Canea, Isljnd of Crete, which says that Georgi Berovitch is a Christian Albanian and that his appointment is an excellent one.

Heisen of Chicago, owner of the Sholburn mines, was here Sunday for the purpose of adjusting the differenco which exists between the, miners and the company. Several propositions were made by Ileisen to the miners lo resume work at the ij0-cent basis, or form a co-operative system, or he would turn the mine over to the miners if they would pay 7 per ccnt. on the investment. All three of the propositions were rejected. Mr. Heisen said the mine would remain idlo until November, as the market would not justify his resuming operations.
