IOWA SILVER RESOLUTIONSAt tin- Iowa State ueiuOi:r i'.ic convention Inf-t weeU. tt.* following plain and forcible resolution on the silver question WHS adoptrd. Tho Chicago uatiouai Ir-11 ocratic nveution could do no mure sensible ttunji 'han etnhody tlietu in the ri'^ol utious to lie furnished and adojitpil at that uath'- rit ir: hold to the use of h.itli m'.Id and silver as the standard money of the country anil to tin* diiaire of toth sinld and pilver without dibcriiniuatiou aiiainet either metal or charge for mintage. 1 the judgment or this cor vention. lie exp'icit pledge uf the national dcmoccaiii: party, if fairly ai honorably Kej't. ri quire* the constant effort of every h.yai democrat to accomplish the repeal of all laws heietofore enacted through the instrumentality of tlie republican party. which do in letter and spirit alii-e iii:-er:mitiate n«• ai 11 at silver and in favor of gold and the substitution thereof of allirmative legislation, which phal!. upon pome terms or other, restore silver to equal rights with gold in the mints and coinage of the country.
KKPF.AL OP DKMOJF KT1ZI NG LAWS. Second, We hereby affirm as a deliberate conviction of this convention that the act of 1873 insofar as it demonetized silver and established gold as the single unit of value is a flagrant violation of one of the most important provisions of the constitution of the United States, a violation which every political party ought to condemn, and every good citizen should asbist in expurging from the statutes of tho tepublic. We therefore favor the immediate repeal of all laws by which silver was demonetized and demand its unqualified restoration to tho right of free and unlimited coinage in the mints of the .ited States as money of final redemption at the old ratio of 16 to 1.
CITY RING RULE-
NO better evidence of the control of the republicans of this city by a ring could be evidenced than in the action of the republican portion of tho city government at the meeting of tho council last week. The voters of tho city, republicans and democrats alike, demand retrenchment and with a big R. They wanted tuxes reduced ard economy to be practiced throughout. It was thought, believed and hoped that an nual expenses to the amount at least of between $3,000 and $1,000, would be reduced as soon as the council got together. In place of this not more than $1,500 per year in expenses have been saved. The salary of every man drawing money should havo been reduced from lo to 25 per cent, and those of them not satisfied should have promptly resigned. Those 300 republicans voting for ousting the old members expected and desired this. A few of the republican politi cians constituting a ring got around the republican members and prevented this, and the hopes of retrenchers were blasted. Taxes will not be reduced in the city. The ring don't want them to be.
INCREASING.
The silver sentiment among the people is increasing daily, and the speculators and non-producers who cry for "sound money," as thev are pleased to twtu it, must be appalled. It is solely a matter between wealth ard pro.luc tion. Wall street, and bond buyers and gold speculators, few as they may be compared to the great mass of the people, are determined to rule or ruin iu the matter of controlling the finances of the country, while tho producers, tho men who originate tho wealth, must say nothing. Tho silver seutimeut is well content and satisfied to have the tinances in the same condition as they were previous to 1873. This does not suit the money sharks, however. They cannot make the profits if matters were in tho old groove previous to 1873. The matter while up now should be settled permanently. If silver is good for the western producer it should be to the eastern bond buyer. Silver must have its old position.
IN AGAIN.
One of the speakers in seeking an endorsenient of Cleveland at the convention on Saturday, remarked on the great I indebtedness the democracy owed to him, saying that he had "pulled it out of the woods." Cleveland may have done tho "pulling" alleged, but by his bull-headed course he has pulled the party back into the woods since his present administration begaD. As far as the indebtedness is concerned it may well be asked who brought Cleveland out and made him? The future will probably decide that Cleveland is indebted to the democracy for all tho honors to which he may be entitled.

SHINING SILVER TRUTHS-
1. Ihere is not one free coinage country in tho world to day that is not enjoying unoxaiupled prosperity, the only drawback being a foreign debt contracted on a gold basis. 2. There is not a gold stai-dard coun try in the world to day the properly of which has not suruuk from .'Jo to 60 per cent, in the last twenty-one years uot one iu which there is not unexampled depreft-1011, distress and sorrow. :5. There is not a silver standard country in tho world to day that has any ueed of gold money except to settle foreign balances, and there is not a gold standard country in all the world to-day that the bulk of all the gold is not locked up in the treasury or in the banks, and the people are suffering from "sound tnone\" asphyxia. 1. There is not a silver standard country in the world to-day where there are any idle deposits lying in the banks, all the money being in actual circulation ar.d drawing large iuterest, and tho circulation per capita in the United
States is just about what it is in Mexico, nearly all the money of ultimate redemption being hid away in the vaults of the treasury or national banks. 5. There is not a silver standard country in the world to-day ivhere the laboring man is not receiving full pay and more regular work than he over received before. There is not a gold country in the world to-day where a vast proportion of tho people are not idle, aud where wages are above the rates of 1349, except where they have been maintained by the stubborn persistance of labor unions.
G. There is not a silver standard country in the world to-day where the people are not doing better than ever before. There is not gold standard country where the people are not in more distress and suffering more loss and more apprehension than ever beforo.
NOT FOR CHEADLE-
It was said last week that at a closed door caucus of a number of democrats at Frankfort the feasibility of fusing democratic and populist voters by bringing out ex-Congressman Cheadle as a candidate for Congrese against the republican nom'nee, was un»!er consideration and many present approved of it. Those favoring it certftinly know little of the temper of the democracy UpoU the subject. A more Impolitic thing could not 00 suggested. If nominated Cheadle would not secure a thifd of the votes of the democracy, He is a high tariff man, favors Mount for Governor, but is "soured" on many republicans of the district, but is this any reason why he should be entitled to democratic votes? If so, wo are unable to see where. If the republican party had a prospective majority of 10,000 in the distiict it. wouid bo no reason that the democracy should take up a "soured' republi :an, a half and half, a mug wump, or anything else other than a staunch and reliable democrat, as a candidate let the result be what it might at the fall election. If Cheadle is seeking the nomination under such circumstances he is wasting valuable time, for the democracy are not love with that kind of stock. If he has a sore toe he must go to some other dispensary as the democracy cannot and will not afford him any relief. Even if a candidate and elected he would bo of no political advantage to the party.
A LARGE CONVENTION.
The democratic convention on Saturday last was one of the largest in point of numbers held in Crawfordsville by any political party in years. Tho enthusiasm shown by the convention in the endorsement of the resolutions offered and in the ticket selected, indicates a strong belief in the correctness of principles enunciated and a determination to elect it. There was no ring rule in any of the proceedings, but every individual acted free and independent in matters brought before him, ar.d there was little or no bickering or back-biting because this or that man failed to bo nominated. If the democracy of tho county exhibit the same spirit at the election in November as was shown on Saturday, they can elect the entire county ticket. Will you do it? Let your actions show that you most emphatically will.
ONE man only, we aro told, out of the twenty candidates before tho convention on Saturday was mad and provoked at his defeat, and made some threats of what he would do next tall, Thi6 is not the correct spirit to cultivate. A man, a candidate, who does not figure on defeat but thinks only of suro victory has no right to be a candidate at any time or any place. The right kind of a candidate is he who soon forgets his disappointment and works for the success of the one more successful.
IT looks like there was going to be fully as much fun at St. Louis among the bosses of the party as the most anxious could desire. Quay, Piatt, Clarkson and others will use all the political strategy they possess to defeat McKinley, and even if nominated will do him all the harm possible, the samo as they did after Harrison was nominated four years ago. They aided in defeating Harrison then, and may do the same good work toward McKinley. It has that appearance now at least.
SHIVELY THE LEADING CANDIDATE-
Ex-Congressman Shivel). of South Bend, will, judging from inc.i a'iono, be the leading candidate for .v.-rnor before the democratic State convention at Indianapolis June 24th. lie is favorably mentioned in connection with the position, endorses the growing free silver eentimont of the pertj, :uvl has had extensive legislative experience. Neither Nye. of LaPorte, nor Shanklin, of Evunsville, il is said, will bo candidates. .'.
Mu. JMOCNT, the candidate for Governor, brought his season's wool clip to lowu the other day, and the Journal, his organ, goes into ecstaoy about the superior quality and the high grade of 1 he sheep from which the wool was taken. Now if Mr. Mount will bring au ki hen with a half dozen chickens to town, there is no telling what superior fowls they would be after the Journal learns of it.
