THE FARMERS' INSTITUTE. Through 11 law piiBsrsci by tho legislature soiiii years nun each county pays out uf its* treasury a certain sum yearly, from SoO to £7f, for tho holding of "Farmers' Institutes''' in the winter at which farmers may attend and I.oar some wise men tell all about farmin!, how to hold the plow, when and where to bo.v
wheat,
when to cut elders etc. And here is where Mount got in his work and secured his nomination, llo killed two birds with one stone, lectured at the expense of the tax payers and did quiet work at electioneering for Governor. Mount favored the law fiom the start. Of course he would when it would be of so much advuutage to him in making his canvass., and would cost him nothing to travr-1 around.
The la'.v is undoubtedly wrong and should be abolished. The people are taxed yearly to pay
fur
an individual
interest. Wny not blacksmiths, storekeepers, etc., bo allowed to hold "institutes" at the public expense yearly? One class or pro!oseion is entitled to no more consideration than another. The "Institutes" were originated, no doubt, for
Hellish
purposes only, und as
soon as the support of the tax payers is is withdrawn will go down. If continued it will be a more electioneering machine for future aspirants as it has been in tho past, with a few dull platitudes on auriculturo thrown in aB a makebelieve.
A TICKET TO WIN.
The convention to-day of the democracy of tho county, has some very good material from which to select a ticket through which a successful race can bo made. There has been this year no scramble in particular among applicants for tho nominations, the outlook three months ago not being near so favorable as now for victory, and in consequence candidates have been slow in announcing their uame6. The situation now is much more encouraging, and the opportunities for tho success of a good ticket much more promising. Our republican brethren in tho county are anything but in a harmonious condition. Many of their leaders aro resentful in their feoiingB toward each other. Tho city election in somo respects indicated this. Now wo can take advantage of this. Wo can nominate a ticket that can bo safely carried through to victory. Tho material is at hand from which the election can bo mado that will carry strength, harmony and success with it. Let it be selected to day.
WANT SPOILS.
Developments were made last week which indicate a ring of ten or twelve prominent republican politicians of tho State whoso aim is ^to blood McKeeu and Fairbanks, both candidates for the U. S Senate before tho legislature next winter, and both of whom are wealthy. Tho ring will aim to control so many legislators' votes and will soli to which one of the candidates will give the most money for thorn. Tho scheme was discovered by a Fort Way no republican newspaper and published, but it had not tho courago it would seem to pub lish the names of tho schemers. This should have been done. Such plans for boodle, however, aro not uncommon among republican politicians. It seems natural to them.
IT IS VOTES THAT WE WANT' We have heard of no name yet men tioned in the matter of nomination foj for Governor on the Democratic State ticket that carries auywhon near as much strength with it as that of Tom Taggert. of Indianapolis. It's votes wo want this year not sentiment nor local pride in any locality ot tho State. Taggert simply knows how to got them, and thereforo should bi choson. The republicans of tho State intend giving us an energetic rattling light, yet their lines can bo broken and their forces scattered if wo placo the proper men in command of tho democratic column. If Taggert does not load us on to victory, we havo not yet heard the natno mentioned of tho individual who can,
RESULTS OF THE McKINLEY BILL. Decline of wages.
Dosporato labor strikes. Ono million men out of employment'. Falling off of uustoni rovonues to the amount of $157,000,000.
Not loss in oxports to the amount of $100,000,000. Disappearance of tho treasury surplus to the amount of £200,000,000— Puck.
Tho Indianapolis Sentinel comments, as follows: Workingmen who propose to vote for McKinley if nominated, please ponder the above carefully.
THE POLITICAL BOSSES. It would seem this yeat- for onco that the republican party proposes to set down on tho bosses of the organization, and the most sonsiblo thing in all their

and danger to the people. It dictates the expenditures of tho treasury, tho corruption of tho people, and the robbery of them likowiso. While leaders are necessary in every party, they can be decent, honost uien. Tho way the bosses arejbeing rebuked in tho republican party is a healthy sigu. If in the ensuing campaign such persons should appear in the democratic party they should receive like troatiuent. No party has use for them. They aro poison to the party, a cancer which will sap its life. Kick them out. Political parties thrive best without them. Their rule is certain destruction to the party tolerating them.
TURNED DOWN.
Major Charles T. Doxey was beaten in the house of his friends. The delegates to tho republican State convention saw lit to defeat his aspiration, to bo governor of the State, and nominated a Candida that has every element of weakness and few of strength. Jas. Mount is a professional], office sooker and a chronic agitator. In the past twenty years he has been a democrat, a populist, a republican, and an admixture ot them at allitimes. While a member of the legislature in 1800, from the district composed Jof Boone and
Montgomery counties, he introduced a bill to shoot down tho striking miners of Clay county who were tighting a reduction in wages.
In 1S92 ho was tho populist-republic-an candidate for Congress from tho old Eighth district, and while he had a safe majority of 1,500 votes in his favor ho was beaten by K. V. Brookshire by some 3,100 votes. If he has any claims upon the republican party for support it will be difficult to natno them.—Alexandria News.
Thk effects of tho Nicholson bill, passod by tho last legislature was perceptablo to the naked eye in the late city elections. The democratic gain in Terro Hauto was S00. In Fort Wayne, whore a republican mayor was elected two years ago,
laBt
week tho democrats
elected their man by over l,.'i00 mojority. There were large democratic gains in many other cities, among them aro Marion Cireencastle, Valparaiso, Frankfort, CrawfordsviMe, Kokomo, (Mr. Nicholson's own city.) Mr. Nicholson is tho Hurchard of the republican party. Not a single prohi in the State of Indiana will vote the repullican ticket next fal by reason of the Nicholson bill.

of Ohio, predicts tho
nomination again this year of Grover Clevoland lor president by tho Chicago convention. It is evident that Bookwaiter has been out of tho country for some time or has been asleep. Ho evidently knows about as much of tho feeling in tho ranks of tho democracy as ho did regarding the party in Ohio when he rau for Governor some years ago. Ho was su then of his election and yet was beaten by many thousands of votes.
"Omci.NAi." McKinley men aro turning up among the republicans now all over tho country. Thoro are any number of them in this county, but what offices thoy are seeking under the McKinley administration, should there bo any such, has not vot been mado known. Capt. Talbott it is claimed is one "original" McKinley man, and should send in his application for office soon, boforo thoy aro all claimed.
Hon. F. E. MoGinlf.v, ox-Mayor of Lafayette, is a candidate for Lieutenant Governor before tbo ensuing democratic State convention. McGinley if nominated, wo believe, would add strength to the ticket, asjho is known as hustler and a thorough going democrat, which added to his popularity makes him a strong candidate. Wo would consider his selection a wise choice.
Thk trial of Walling as an accomplice in the murder of Pearl Bryan iB soon under way at Newport, Kentucky. Tho sentiment of those following up the details of the murder and trial of Jackson, is that Walling is equally guilty and should snffer the death penalty.

Tur. Madison county republicans cannot recover from tho defeat of their I man Doxey for Governor, by Mount, and turn the latter "a damned jay." It is quite evident that "there are others"— other "jays." especially when some of them expend a small fortune in seeking tho nomination and then get left.
