Bis Stomach More Durable Than an Oyster Can. "You would never imagine thai the human stomach was more invulnerable to alcohol than an oyster can, would you'" said F. A. Carter, of Lou:3ville, Ky., to a number of friends. The fr'.onds thoroughly agreed that their imagination would never run thus far,and the questioner proceeded: "In the whisky concern which I represent there is employed an old darky. I suppose he is well advanced in the seventies. "The firm is controlled by a typical Southern gentleman, who owned, before the war, among other slaves the negro referred to. Therefore, the negro taker, to himself all the privileges of the favored servitor. Among these is one not allowed to any other employe, the consumption of a certain quantity of the product of the distilery day by day. But ordinary whisky will not satisfy him. So he procures an oyster can and tills it with what a whisky man calls low wines. These low wines consist of what, to use another technical phrase, is described as 'hotshot.' That is they are formed of the condensed steam of the first boil of the material used in whisky manufacture. They Tre never below 160 degrees in the proof. "He fills the oyster can with this every morning, coming dowD to the distillery even on Sunday for the purpose, and, sip by sip, drawing it to the dregs before night arrives. Every week he is compelled to get a new -byst&v-can, for every week one is -completely- burned through by the .alcohol. ,'Yet the old darky goes on -with .his drinking. Several doctors have.been to visit him. They all assure him that he will drop dead without a moment's warning if he does not quit, his habit. 'Never mind, massa,' he will reply 'I ain't never drop daid, yit,' and his teeth shine like cat's eyes in a coal-hole as he says it." ."•

EIFFEL TOWER BIKE.'

New YorU

A Two-Story Steed Uaed by Wheelman. One of the most curious sights that has lately been seen in the streets of New York is what has felicitously been called the Eiffel tower bicycle. This machine is constructed on tbe Bame principle as the ordinary safety, but it has a frame superstructure which carries the rider at a distance of some ten feet from terra firma.

This machine is frequently seen on the avenues of the city and the rider easily overtops the ordinary lamp post along the route of travel. lie seems to have perfect control over the machine, which he can drive at quite a good rate of speed, taking sharp corners with perfect easa and apparent safety. This bicycle is mounted from behind in the usual way, but it has to be held by attendants while mounting. The owner sometimes places the machine against the wall and mounts from a standstill, but, of course, in the city this is not always practicable.

There is considerable difficulty in driving the bicycle up hill, owing partially to the weight, the length of the sprocket chain and the balance of the machine. The sprocket chain extends from the upper sprocket wheel to the rear wheel, and the lateral swing or play of the chain is prevented by a guide roller mounted just above the back wheel. The front wheel m«a»ures twenty-eight inches, the rea* wheel thirty-six JS and the extreme heigl.. .J to be thirteen feet.

The machine was constructed in England, but the tire was applied

after it arrived in this country. The adventurous spirit who has been seon imprisoned in England riding this remarkable wheel is usually accompanied by a number of companions who serve as a sort of bodyguard and prevent vehicles and pedestrians from obstructing the way.

Ordinary egg shells are commonplace everyday frail objects enough, but ostrich egg shells can be made into really splendid and decorativa objects. The material is hard and strong. The nainral color is a delicious deep creamy white, and so we have the best of foundations on which to start. Treated with simple gold ornament t.hey are charming, and fitted with silken bags they are most fascinating bonbonnieres.

But it is when painted after Persian models that the shells become really gorgeous. Then they are pierced at both ends. They are treated in the truest oriental style with stripes of deep, warm red, rich blue and gold, and are suspended by chaitis of brass run through the hollow shell. Some seen recently add a final and most successful touch to a Persian corner arranged in a clever woman's home. This corner itself is curtained off with hangings of real Persian make, and there is a divan covered and cushioned with a rug and stuffs all of the same sort. But the egg shells whioh hang here and there excite more comment than all else. They seem like oval balls of splendor, if balls can be oval, and their deep rich tones decorate the corner even more successfully than would more costly things. They are peculiar, too, and out-of-the-common things always appeal to a true woman's heart, so that for every reason their owner is to be congratulated upon having put egg shells to BO unique and so telling a use.
