There are eight candidates for Sheriff before the republican convention, and it is quite difficult to name the nominee. If Buck Brothers did not live in Union he would lead the crowd, but a9 it looks as if Union desired to "hog the ring" some of the outside townships will no doubt loudly protest. They consider that in giving Union the Recorder, Surveyor, Prosecutor and one Commissioner, she will have more than her share and thill the other nominations, including Sheriff must go elsewhere. Deitrick, of Brown, many republicans think will be nominated for Sheriff.

CARLISLE OUT OF THE DENTIAL RACE.

PRESI-

Formal Notice to That KfTeet Sent to Chairman Charles l.onc—The Secretary Thinks the Party lias Other Fit

Men—Advice a* to l'lntform.

Washington, April 6.—Secretary Carlisle has written the following letter on the subject of his candidacy for the presidential nomination at the Chicago convention: "Washington, April 4, 1896.—Charles R. Long, Esq., Chairman Democratic State Central Committee, Louisville, Ky.—My Dear Sir Your favor of March 30, in which you say, in substance, that many of my friends in Kentucky and elsewhere desire me to become a candidate before the approaching national democratic convention for the nomination for the office of president, and requesting me to give 'some authoritative or definite expression' upon the subjcct, was duly received and has been maturely considered. "Many communications upon the same subject and similar import have been received from friends in different parts of the country, and while very grateful for these numerous expressions of confidence and esteem upon tho part of my democratic fellow-citizens,

I have not been able to reach the conclusion that the existing conditions require me to comply with their requests by authorizing them to announce me a -, a candidate for the presidential nomination. While I feel a profound interest in the welfare of my party, I am much more concerned about its declaration of principles than about its selection of .candidates, because, in my opfnion, its failure or success at the election, as well as its capacity "or useful service in the country in the I'.iuire, depends upon the position it takes or omits to take upon the public questions now engaging the attention o£ the people, and especially the questions affecting the monetary system of the country and the character and amount of taxation to be imposed upon our citizens. Its position upon these and other subjects having been agreed :on, and clearly and distinctly anjunced, the convention ought to have difficulty in selecting an acceptable •vididate who will fairly represent its ifws and, in order that its deliberations may be embarrassed as little as possible by the contentions of rival spirants and their friends, I think my

Juty to the party will be best performed •y declining to participate in ,a contest .or the nomination, "The obligations assumed when I accepted my present official position require me to devote my entire time and attention to the personal interests committed to my charge, and I shall continue to discharge the duties imposed upon me to the best of my ability and 'ii such manner as will, in my judgment, most certainly promote the true interests of the country and if, in the opinion of my fellow-democrats in Kentucky, my services entitle me to their commendation and approval, I would regard their indorsement of my public course as an ample reward for tho little I have been able to accomplish in behalf of honest administration and a sound financial policy. "With many thanks for your kind letter, I am, very truly yours, "J. G. CARLISLE."

MoKinley Assured of Two Mora. Birmingham, Ala., April 6.—McKinley scored another victory in De Kalb county Saturday, the result of which is to give him the Seventh district, with its two delegates, to tho republican national convention. The district convention is to meet at Gadsden Tuesday. MoKinley has twenty-one of the delegates, six are uninstructed, and nine are divided among the combination opponents. It seems certain that C. D. Alexander of Attalia and George Curtis, both McKinleyites, will be sent to St. I.ou is.

Awful Suffering In Armenia. Hoston, April 6.—From recent letters from eastern Turkey it appears that the condition of the destitute in that section is most deplorable in spite of the relief work which has been done there. Recent writers say that almost the entire Armenian nation is struggling for existence under conditions the very contemplation of which almost makes one long for death.
