M'KINLEY AHEAD-
Notwithstanding there may be many changes on the republican checker board between this time and their national convention in June, si ill at thi.s tim^ McKinley is ahead of all oilier candidates and stands the strongest wilt: the majority of his partv all nver the country. The high protectionists of the east, the wool producers of the wi--«t and the sugar planters of the south are all for McKinley, tirst and last, lhey look upon him as their Moses to lead them on the road toward prosperity. It matters not what they may consider Harrison to have been as a president, however smooth his administration may have been, they think McKinley atad high tariIT above everybody and everything as the thing most needed in the immediate future. Reed or Allison they consider while probably making able presidents, would not in their minds have the strong pronounced ideas of high tariff and protection that would be found in McKinley, and McKinley with them it must be if possible. Notwithstanding tho strong pressuro that will be brought to bear to secure his nomination, he yet has no "cinch" upon it. lie has enemies in his own ranks.
Neither Foraker nor Sherman are particularly loud in their love for him, and would not greatly rend their garments if he failed to securo it. Neither Piatt, Quay nor Elkins, all great republican leaders, are for him, and at the. St. Louis convention there will be many scheming leaders working for other favorites. If^the friends of McKinley secure him the nomination it will be by the hardest bind of work. It matters nut that he is the favorite of his party, the politicians generally decide who shall be the nominee regardless of this. Therefore high tariff and protective advocates will have to be alive and alert, or their favorite will go down in the general wreck that attends HO many candidates at all national conventions.
UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
The Supreme Court of tho State after having tho matter under consideration for sotae months has decided that the apportionment or "gerrymander" acts of the legislatures of 1895 and 1893 are unconstitutional, void and of no etfect. The decision has been awaited with interest by the politicians and office seekers. By this decision hold-over Senators of the last legislature are hold-overs no longer, be they republican or democrat. It will greatly discourage the republican plan of carrying the legislature and electing a U. S. Senator in place of Voorhees. If they have a majority in either house they have to elect their men yet, aB no hold overs count in that contest.
The "gerrymander'' feature of any legislature is the work of political scoundrels who seek to legalize a wrong, and applies in the past to both parties. It is a grand thing for honest voters that the Supreme Court can undo a wrong that is sought to be perpetrated upon them. Something new must be originated by political rascals if they desire to continue in office as it is evident tho gerrymander business will be destructive to tho party favoring it,
NEBAKER AND HIS FRIENDSThe masses who wero in favor of Mr.Nebaker are as much entitled to stand up and be counted as are the masses who favored Mr. Gowdy.—Journal.
It is indeed sad that there should be any misunderstanding between the friends of Gowdy and Nebaker. It may prevent a union for spoils, and the grand raid on the State treasury that is under contemplation. The disagreement between the "friends" of Gowdy and Nebaker, will be a fit illustration of tho adage "When roguet fall out honest men will receive their dues." Just now the Gowdy wing of the party is on top, and this is where the gall and wormwood comes in from the other side of the house. The Gowdy fellows were altogether too smooth for Nebaker with all bis reputed political cunning, and having won tho prize, the chairmanship, propose to be bosses of tho situation in the republican household. The opposition to Gowdy may "6tand up and be counted" if he so wills, but he is on deck now and will stay there.
WHETHER any democratic statesman judges well or ill upon a particular question whether the party is united or divided at a particular time, says the St. Louis Republic, certain it always is that around the core of democratic belief are gathered the best, truest and bravest of the American nation. That is why the democratic party often loses power through the beat of its discussions and always regains power by the inherent right of its doctrine and the invulnerable strength of itB manhood.
REPUBLICAN STATE COMMITTEE. In the war engendered in the republican ranks through the S'.ate lately over the chairmanship of the State central committee in which Nebaker was completely defeated for the position and all his sneaking tactics headed olT, a feeling wab created ti.erebv that will not down even at the termination of the campaign, and the fellows that will be desirous of evening up with their enemies will be much more numerous than can be counted on tho ends of ono's fingers. The low and unscrupu- TILLMAN, tbe populist Senator from lous acts alwa)s common with the South Carolina, said many uncalled, leaders jf that party iu Indiana, were
carried on among themselves iu tho late contest for the chairmanship. Many bitter things were said, many sneaking acts concocted, and the remembrance of them will not pass away in a week or a month. There are undoubtedly two wings of the party in Indiana—Harrison and anti-Harrison, each striving for the.mastery. Nebaker represented the llarriton wing. Gowdy the opposite, and the Gowdy division triumphed. Although Harrison may not be nominated his friends in Indiana will seok to control 'he spoils, and dietato who shall receive the ollics so far as this State is concerned in the event of a republican triumph in November next. The Gowdy fellows will want to do this, and between the two a continuous clash will bo going on. If, between the quarrels and wrangles of the corrupt, the democracy of the State can be benefitted by the election of tho State ticket, and tho installment of honest, squaro men into the offices, then the war now going on among these creatures will not have been in vaiu, and tho results not have been regretted.
A MILLIONAIRE TO STRETCH HEMP. In the criminal trials of this country a remarkable fact was manifested at St. Louis tho other day. A millionaire who had killed his wife and child was actually sentenced to be hung! His wealth, standing and subterfuge of insanity availed him nothing, and unless the Supreme Court reverses the case he must die like a dog, as ho probably deserves. It is refreshing to hear of these kind of verdicts, where money fails to defeet justice. Had he have been some poor devil with a family committing the deed, his execution could have been looked for, of course. Tho idea of a rich man, a millionaire at that, being sentenced to be hung is terrible to think of—to some people.
DUN & Co., in their review of trade for last week say: "The Senate sun injures all business by doing nothing." The statement is not strictly correct. The Senate has already done about all the injury it can by making it perfectly plain that it will not do the right thing so long as it is constituted as at present S. Pierpont Morgan saw that clearly as long ago as the 4th of January. It would not have been unknown to any other intelligent business man two weeks later. The truth is it makes no sort of difference whether the Senate passes its free silver substitute for the bond bill or the popgun tariff bill or goes on talking about them until next December, for neither one can become a law.
TIIE next tight in the State republican fight will be between the friends of Fairbanks and McKean, as to which shall be the candidate for U. S. Senator before the legislature. Fairbanks is the Indianapolis candidate, McKeen the State at large. Gowdy, the republican chairman, was the country candidate, while Nebaker was the favorite of the State officers and a ring hanging around the New Dennison hotel at Indianapolis, Gowdy won and easily too. McKeen is much the most popular and best known and he too may hold the winning hand.
THE Montgomery county republican ring were all Nebaker men and anxiously hoped for his selection as chairman of the State central republican committee, and their grief is very deep at his defeat. The ring hero approves of Nebaker's system of campaigning—bribery, intimidation, or anything to win. Gowdy, who headed Nebaker off so smoothly, is said to be a very different sort of a man, and believes there is honor and decency even in politics.
AROUT all the present Congress has done in this session is for the different members to introduce bills granting this or that person an increase of pension, or granting the widow of some official $100 per month, A gigantic raid on the government treasury is constantly under way, and tho demagogues bidding for future votes seem to be making great progress in their work.
EX-PRESIDENT BENJ. HARRISON is reported to have made $10,000 the other day in less than an hour's talk before a court in Washington City. There aro scores of republican hangers-on about the New Dennison at Indianapolis who could offer him valuable suggestions as to how he could judiciously expend this sum.
THE national democratic convention at Chicago in July will bo held in tho Colisseum building, now in course of construction. It is situated adjacent to tho old World's Fair ground, and will have a seating capacity of 15,000 persons,
TOWNSHIP MEETINGS I 'lhe democracy of the county should remember the meotings called for today in the several townships for tho purpose of selecting a precinct committeeman anal a township chairman. Let there be a good attendance, and see that tbe political machinery of the coming campaign is put in proper working order. In Union township the convention will be held this afternoon in the small court room.
unmanly and brutal things rewarding the President, members of his cabinet and othets. Tillman represents an element in this country that never can succecd—wild, impracticable, fanatical—the Jacobins of tho nation, with he talcing tho character of Robespierre.

Poisons engendered by food fermenting in a dyspeptic stomach are the direct cause of rheumatism, gout, bronchitis, liver and kidney complaints, asthma, pnemonia and many nervous ailments.
These results are prevented by the use of the Shaker Digestive Cordial, a remedy discovered and prepared by the Shakers of Mount Lebanon, N. Y.
