BAN AGAINST SECRET SOCIETIES. A special published the other day said the ban issued against secret societies by the authority from the Pope of Rome, is irrevocable as regards Catholics belonging to these societies, which means they must cut loose from the societies or they will be cut loose from the church. It includes the societies of the Knights of Pythias, Sons of Temperance, Odd Fellows, etc., and there are said to be 100,000 Catholics in the United States at this time who belong to these societies. How this edict will effect them is yet to be seen. It would seem to the citizen of average sense that so long as any member of the church is a believer in its tenente, is prompt in his attendance at worship and conducts himself at all times and in all places as a good man should, it is none of the Pope's business how many secret societies any member may attach himself to. These societies, if we understand their object, are for the moral and social advancement of men, and have no ether reason for their existence. Therefore why interdict any one from joining them? The right to think and act is at once taken from the member, and he must ask the church authorities what he shall eat and drink, or with what he shall be clothed. This system of dictation
Beems

ble, and very many of American born Catholics, we believe, will pay no attention to it, and will go out of tho church rather than submit to it.
SHERIFFS OFFICE VALUEAin't it strange
thatBO
many fellows
want to run for sheriff on the republican ticket in this county, after Sheriff Davis has been telling them for so many months past that the office pays little or nothing, that the new law has cut down the emoluments of the office so much that there is nothing in it, etc? They evidently don't believe him after seeing the healthy allowances made to him by the county commissioners at every term, and viewing the new houses that he is building around town. There are four or five candidates for the place already, and before tbl nominating election will probably be that many more We are pained that these candidates will not believe Sheriff Davis. Even his deputy, Brothers, apparency don't believe him, or if he does is willing to make sacrifice of time and money all for the benefit of his party, although a loss to himself. We have rarely witnessed such evidences of patriotism and self sacrifice as the candidates for the sheriff office on the republican ticket
are now making or getting ready to
PUNISH TO THE FULLEST EXTENT. Ihe arrest of two men last week, one here and the other at Covington, on charge of committing an abortion, thereby causing the death of the woman upon whom it was performed, it is hoped, it proven guilty, will result in the severest punishment prescribed by the law to both of them. The practice of abortion is one of the most damnable of crimes, and no sympathy whatever Bhould be Bhown men proven guilty of it.
Pale lips indicate low vitality, sometimes actual disease. ,•
INDICTING LEGISLATORS The grand jury of Franklin county, Ohio, laet woek returned indictments against twelve or fourteen members of the legislature of that State for bribery and corruption. They were promptly arrested and famished the required bonds, and wero liberated uutil the day ot trial. They were of both political parties and the charges against them in many ot the cases will be proven. The bribe taker and the bribe payer are thieves alike, and should be punished as such regardless of their standing in the commuaity. A man, a public official, who will pay out or receive money for corrupt purposes belongs in the same category with the pick-pocket, forger and all-round criminal, and if justice is not blind will receive similar punishment. In Illinois at the last session of the State legislature, several members were proven guilty of bribery and were punished, exposed and humiliated for their criminal conduct. We doubt not had the etTort have been made. ihe san.e state of affairs would have been found to exist in the last
Indiana legislature, many rjood acts to be introduced and soon committee rooms, or
session the There w.-ro too passed into la*a after killed in Urn
after they had t'een brought before the House or Senate, not to create sizspic. ion thai tho use of money prevented them from becoming apart of the laws of the State. Had a grand jury, as in Ohio, have gotten after them tnany ot the bogus patriots c,f ILe State now posing ns political leaders, no.v swelling up with importance as the campaign approaches, now running as men free from corruption of any kind, would have been exposed, degraded as they deserve to be. and retired into obscurity. It would be a grand thing for the reputation of the State if hereafter the Ohio and Illinois methods be pursued in dealing with corrupt legislators.
NEW INSURANCE COMPANIES. Movements are under way ia some parts of the State to organize home mutual tire insurance companies by which the insured can throw off the exacting grip of eastern and foreign companies, and have their property insured at a much lower rate than is now possible. As it is the insurance companies are nothing but a gigantic trust charging whatever rates their fancy dictates, and from which tho insured has no recourse. He can pay the rates demanded or quit insuring, and that is all there is about it. It is believed that responsible acd reliable insurance companies can be formed that will insure property at much lower rates than are now asked, and if so, the sooner they are put under way the better.
A vkry good indication of the kind of brigands that are at the head of the republican party in Indiana can be judged by the strife between the friends of Gowdy and Nebaker in the late contest for the chairmanship of the State central committee. Each side said and did everything for their favorite and hesitated at nothing to win. These same men would wink encouragingly at the altering of tally sheet papers, the bribing of voters, or anything else disreputable to win. The democratic central committee should understand thoroughly just what kind ot cattle they will encounter this year, and shouid be prepared for them at every turn in the road, We could have as much respect for any well trained forger or buin-'o steerer as of these people.
RECOGNIZE THEM.
From the succession of victories woe by the Cubans and the desperate efforts made by them for the independence of their country it would seem that they have won their claim to be recognized at belligerants by this government, and should have it. It would be a-great encouragement to them and would speed the hour of their deliverance from the yoke of Spain. The Spaniards have changed commanders in their army and from now on propose a relenteas war with the Cubans. It wdl be war to the knife from now on. If, however, the Cubans have the su :uess from now on as heretofore they will soon drive their enemies from the island, and have government of their own.
NEBAKER VS. GOWDYThe contest among republicans in this State for weeks past has been over the chairmanship of tbo republican State central committee. It was either (iowdy or Nebaker. The better, or 'most honest portion of the party were for Gowdy tho opposite to this favor Xebaker. Nebaker in politics is known aa a vile, dishonest trickster who will resort to the lowest methods to succeed—a blocks-of-five Dudley man as it were, Gowdy is just as old and experienced in politics as is his opponent, but has entire different methods for campaign work
In
all the talk about the financial affairs of this country it should- be kept steadily in mind that the republican party is entirely and exclusively responsible for the financial laws under which this country is now struggling to maintain its credit and keep all of the complex and varied forms of money at a par with each other. Whatever fault there is to be found in the system, the republicans alone are responsible for it. They made all the 1aw»—PaPorte Argus.
"A GREAT STRUGGLE." Tho big majority by wbich the republicans carried Indiana in 1894 is not likely to bo duplicated in 1890. The campaign of this year cannot be wou away from the democrats wittout a great struggle, with all the force combined and harmonious.—Lafayette Courier.
You could not have told the truth more forcibly if you had sworn to it. The big republican majority of 1594 was won through the indifference of democrats as to results, and a general disgust of the administration, and in consequence thousands of them in the State remained away from the polls on election day. The situation will be entirely different ibis year. There are strong inducements in view which appeal to every democrat to stand by his party and support its nominees, and this year they will do it. They see the timidity, the partizanism, the do-nothing policy of republican House of Representatives. They see tho continual incro ichiDg, through republican favoritism, of capital over labor. They see and koow 1 enough to oppose and labor to defeat tho republican ticket, and will aim to do it by all hunrst means. All is asked is a ticket in both State and county that will commend themselves to the people acd the victory is half won. Tho Courier is correct regarding "a ^reat struggle," and the democracy expect and intend th it it shall be such, a very different r.ffair from 1891.
A BIG MORTGAGE.
When a rich man wants money he wants it bad. Most persons would think that an individual of the lnmiece wealth that Lucky Baldwin is reported to possess wojld have no need of ever becoming hard up for money. His wealth has been estimated to be all the way from ten to thirt\ millions of dollars. The California papers of last week contained a statement that in order to raise the sum of 8300,000. Baldwin had mortgaged the Baldwin Hotel and theatre of San Francisco, and also 2,700 acres of land known as the San Anita ranch, near Los Angeles. Ihis is a pretty good sum of money, and in the hands of a prudent man, GG years old, should last him the remainder of his davs.
The son and daughter of ex-President Harrison are reported aa very much displeased with their father's contemplated marriage to Mrs. Dimmick. No doubt if they had their way their father would remain a widower, as by that arrangement they could at his death get all bis wealth instead of having it divided, as would probably be the case in the event of a second marriage. That is generally really the case in second marriages that causes the opposition ot children, and is most times the only real reason for the opposition to Buch unions.

I11 the Beginning
Of a new year, when the winter season of close confinement is only half gone, ni?ny find that their health begins to break down,, that the least exposure threatens sickness. It is then as well as at all other times, and with people even in good health, that the following facts should be remembered, namely: that Hood's Sarsaparilla leads everything in the way of medicines that it accomplishes the greatest cures in the world has the largest sale in the world, and requires the largest building in tho world devoted exclusively to the preparation of the proprietary medicine. Does not this conclusively prove, if you are sick, that Hood's Sarsaparilla is the medicine for you to take?
