"Tlie Spnn of I.ll'e." "The Span of Life," Sutton Vane's melodrama of the realistic order, returned last evening to the llaytnarket where had its first Chicago proilue tion a few weeke ago.

The lighthouse scene could hardly lf improved upon. Half murdered by thr vidian, the hero, who is tho keeper of the lights, recovers consciousness and strength enough to realize what IIHP happened. He is out cf oil, through the machinations of hiB enemy and knowB that the absence of the light will probably cause disaster to ships that pass near the dangerous reefs. Tile only thing to do iB to ring the fog bell, and he can reach tho bell only by climbing the outside of the tower. Ho makes the ascent slowly and painfully reaches the bell, and ringsout the alarm, The villain bearing tho clang of the bell hastens to Btop^t by hurling the bravo light keeper into the oi:ean. but help arrives just in time to defeat him the lamp is hastily lighted and as tho first Hash is seen, a huge ocean steamer, with her port holes aglow with light, heaves into sight, tacking in time to avert the threatened cntitRtrophe.— Chicago Herald.
