Tlic Fire Wednesday Morning. The lire department had a call at 1 clock Thursday morning to extinguish a lire in the cellar of Jae. Mahorney's house, near the corner of Washington and College streets'
I he whole department, consis ing of our delapidated hose wagon, and firemen, were promptly on hand.
When they arrived at Mr. Mahorney's house the smoke was pouring in volumes from the basement. It looked as though the whole place was a sure goner. Mr. Mahorney thought so aB he had quickly enveloped the twins in extra covering and safely deposited them with the neighbors. When the department arrived Chief Dorsey quic-ly realized where the fire was located, and taking one of the small hand fire extinguishers, which ho has on the hose wagon, he slipped into the cellar and quickly e*. ting iiBhed the fire without any losb

Had the chief been compelled to put tho water hose into the cellar, Mr. Mahorney would have had to employ a steam engine next morning to pump out the water. As it was, with tho chemical extinguisher, the loss was nothing, otherwise than routing out the department at the midnight hour.
This fire is another evidence cf the value of the chemicals It might bo well for our citj council to take a lesson from tho misfortune which Indianapolis has just suffered. The following from tho Indianapolis Journal is applicable to Crawfordsville:
"There was once a boy who, although barefooted in winter time, saia he didn't care about Bhoes-, but he was "6utrering" for a buzzotn-pin." Indianapolis should not spend a dollar on parks until it has reformed its fire department up to date. Let us bo safe before we are ornamental."

A ThaiikHKiviiiff Fugitive. On Thanksgiving Day a sixteen-year-old girl ran away from her home in Ladoga, Montgomery county, coming to this city. A day or so later her sister came up to look for her, putting her case in the hands of the police. Nothing could be heard of the runaway until the sister had gone home. Then it became known that the girl was employed as a servant girl in the family of Dr. L. M. Irwin. The sister was notified and she came up yesterday, taking the truant homo with her last night. She gir! related a few of her experiences on the streets of a strange town and they were far frotn being creditable to the young men of the city. It is vary fortunate that all Lafayette young men can not be guaged by the few who may have approached this helpless stranger. —Lafayette Courier.
