William H. Durham Dies on Wednes­

day Morning.

W illiam II. Durham, for many years a I banker and business man of Crawfordsi"°. died at his residence, south of the city, on Wednesday morning last, after an illness of only live or six days.

During his long residence her\ Mr. Durham has always taken an active part in business until he became involved some two years ago through hisendorseuieui for the Muncie Nad Works, since which time 'he may hav- been said to hav" practically retired from an active busine life.

He remained there two yean., coming back to Putnam county, he established a store at Russeiville with his father, remaining in the business un" til ItyJl. That year he came to Crawfordsville end has resided here over since. He was an able linansier. was a man of many excellent qualities, was kind and accommodating tohis acquaintances and friends, and his death is regretted by those who Knew him intimately. Ilo leaves a wife and a son, a the remaining members of his family. His funeral occurred on Friday forenoon, the interment taking place at Oak hill.

K. Fletcher's undertaking rooms where an inquest was held last night, the verdict of the jury being that the cause of the death was heart failure induced by the excessive use of cigarettes. The deceased was a son of John B. Robb. of this city. lie was about 21 years of age and leaves a wife and one child. Charley was naturally a bright follow with a kind and obliging disposition, but the excessive use of cigarettes played ha"oc with him mentally and morally, and although he took the Keel'y cure for the habit, the treatment did him no permanent good. The funeral will take place from Fletcher's undertaking parlor at 2 p. m. to day and the interment will be at Fairview,—-Joplin Mo. Herald.

McOullinand his brother "Spot" got into a drunken quarrel'with some fellows at New Ross on the 20th of May last, and for a time terrorized thn town John Myers is the prijjseuuting witness. The proper way would bo to close this notorious quart shop and keep them in jail for some time to come. They were again fined on Thursday by Mayor Bandel.

Mr. Harry Doherty and Lotha Scott, of Ladoga, wore married at the home the bride's parents at that place, Rev Lee Murry officiating. After the ceremony they wore tendered a large reception. Mr. Doherty is employed in tho bank, and is one Ladoga's best young men. Miss Scott is the charming daughter of Mr. A. M. Scott, and will mase the groom a good wife. The gifts were very tine. After they return they will be at home at ho bride's mother's until spring, when they will go to housekeeping in this city. The Presbj terian synod of northern Indiana will meet at Logansport ()ctobei .S for a three day's session. This will be the twenty-fifth anniversary of tho first meeting of the synod and the exercises will be largely of a letrospectivo nature. T. lirst session was held in the old First church, which stood on the site of the present structuse. Among tho prominent divines who will tako part in the coming meeting are the Kev. Arthur J. Brown, of New rk. tho Revs. Sol Dickey and M. L. Urines, of Indianapolis, and Dr. U. W Burroughs, of Wabash college.

A large real estate deal, involving the transfer of lu2 city lots in tho Fairview addition of Lebanon, was closed week, William White, of Flinday, O., has baught the lots and will offer them for sale. Mr. White has had consderablo experonce in booming new additions, having successfully disposed of largo additions to Flindey, O., and to Cincinnati. Nate Cottinberry's son was knocked oil' of his log wagon and seriously in jured by lightning on west Market street.

Wm. Berry's residence waB also struck by lightning and the veranda and chimney torn down, but fortunately no ono was hurt. Miss Ethel Talbot escaped also. L. G. Patterson's house on west Main street was als struck but litttle damage was done,
