fg: Oliver K. Pagan, one of ti:t vs-si*t-ints of General Black, the United/ -.le« attorney, represented the prosecution, but did not arrive until after tho cases had been continued. Attorney Miiford J.

Thompson represented Captain Streeter, while D. B. Phelps was the counsel for Cox, .Tames Ijinden represented Applegate and Prank E. Baker was the attorney for Nine. The alleged crime for S': which the defendants were brought into

pi-nUer ol the House court is of a verv serious nature. Captain Porter of tiie United States secret service arrested them on the ehargo of forging the name of President Cleveland, as well as the names of Secretary Hoke

Smith and W. L:\niorei.iix, recorder of the general land olllco, to a pre-emp-tion certificate, which entitles tho defendants to the land bounded by Lake Michigan, the Chicago river and St. Clair anil Oak sfrree's. The paper was geen by Geortre K. Detwiler, a publisher and printer in the Unity building.

Spelled Smitll'u First Name "Oak." He noticed that the document was not numbered as it should bo, and Hoke Smith's name was spelled "Oak." He made inquiry about the mattor at Washington, and was notilleil that no such land patent had ever been granted. l)jtwiler asked for the patent from Captain Streeter, to whom he had returned it. Then Detwiler sent it to Washington and told tho captain that it was a forgery. All tho trouble into which Captain Streeter and his associates havo fallen has been caused by the light which has long been waged for the possossion of tho north side property of 1SU acres which Streeter has always claimed to be his property, but which the residents along tho shore from the river to Lincoln park also claim. Streeter's claim is on the ground of "sovereignty" and he has been in trouble over the matter for yoars.
